Your opinion, please...flooring for lake cottage

We're building a lakeside cottage that will eventually be our retirement home (10-15yrs. out.)

I am at a loss at what type of wood flooring would be most suitable for the main living spaces.

We have an open-concept floor plan for the 1st floor kitchen/living/dining area. There is a guest bdrm on the 1st floor and 2 bdrms. upstairs.

I like the look of wide plank floors in a cottage, and in a deeper brown shade. But was told they would show scratches more than most(and dirt & dust, as well.)

The place will have lots of visitors, and we have 2 med. size dogs, so I thought maybe pine floors. I know they're softer, but don't people "expect" them to show dings and wear?

My GC suggested warm toned maple. I have that in my current home and perhaps that's why I see it as looking more "suburban" than cottage.

Walls will be off-white and we'll have large windows and French doors, so surroundings will be light and neutral.

Would anyone like to offer suggestions? Thanks!
