How to juice a pomegranate

While sifting through some cookbooks i came across a great recipe for Valentines day. Pomegranate Ice Cream YUM! The ingrediants call for 2 pomegranates. The directions read:

"Juice the pomegranates, straining the juices into a bowl. You will have approximately 3/4 cup of juice. Reserve the seeds for garnish."

I am unsure how to juice the pomegranates. Do i use a juicer? Would i just smash them? Also the juice is in the seed so how would i reserve the seeds for garnish? Help!

I love pomegranites...but I don't like messing with the juice. This is one fruit I make an exception for and buy the bottle.

I would use a juicer and forget about using the seeds as a garnish - I really don't like the seeds at all. If you don't have a juicer, I think you can put the kernels in a blender and then strain the seeds out. In this respect, pomegranates are like passion fruit - many seeds that are difficult to remove. I bought a juicer just for the passion fruit I used to get from my passion vine. I should get another passion vine because it makes beautiful flowers, but it is rather difficult to control, since it tends to grow everywhere, once it gets started, and possums love it. Maybe I should just get a pomegranate tree instead, like my friend Eva has.

Instant pectin? There is powdered pectin or liquid pectin. Which form and brand name do you have? As a general guide you can add powdered pectin to any recipe but not liquid pectin. But normally it is used only when specified by the recipe. They are not interchangeable. You can use fresh lime or lemon juice when making jams and jellies because they are not there for safety reason (with a couple of exceptions). They are included to make the jam/jelly set. But when the lemon/lime juice is used for acidification reasons, such as when canning tomatoes, then bottled juices only. Fresh lemons and limes have a wide range of pH, bottled juices are stabilized with a fixed pH. Dave

Don't know what kind of juicer you have, and the seeds won't hurt any quality juicer, but remember to get all the skins off as they are terribly bitter. The seeds are also bitter but my juice tasted good. Remember also that your juice from pomegranates does not seem to last as long as other juices in the fridge. If I were buying a case of pomegranates [and I have no idea how many that is where you live], you may be better off juicing just a half case at a time. The fruit keeps much better in the peel than the juice does in a jug in the refrigerator. Hope this helps a little. Jim in So Calif

Here's another I've clipped. It was sooooo good. Pomegranate and Walnut Stew with Chicken Recipe By: http://uktv.co.uk/food/recipe/aid/514634 Ingredients: - 250 g ground walnuts, ground very fine for the correct texture, chopped fine will have a coarser texture - 250m l chicken stock - 1 chicken stock cube - 4 golden plums, (optional), stones removed ( I used pitted plums) - 3 tablespoons olive oil - 6 whole chicken breast fillets, I cut them in half to make two thinner fillets for easier cooking - 1/2 large onions, diced - 1/4 teaspoon turmeric - 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground white pepper - 200m l fresh pomegranate juice, store bought (unsweetened), I used more molasses and just added extra water - 3 1/2 tablespoons pomegranate molasses, Persian brand - 1 1/2 tablespoon brown sugar - 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon - few drops of beetroot extract, optional), I left out Directions: 1. Place the walnuts in a heavy saucepan over a medium heat and stir constantly for 3-4 minutes or so, until lightly toasted. 2. Lower the heat slightly, add the chicken stock, the stock cube and the plums and cook for about 15 minutes. 3. In a separate large saucepan or casserole dish, heat the oil over a medium heat and fry the chicken on all sides to seal. Add the onions, turmeric and pepper. 4. Add the walnut mixture to the chicken, reduce the heat, cover with a lid and cook for a further 10-15 minutes. 5. Stir in the pomegranate juice, pomegranate molasses, sugar, and cinnamon and cook for 20 minutes more. 6. Just before serving, add the beetroot dye. Serve with rice.

we lived in the San Joaquin Valley and had pomegranate trees. Most people don't know, the fruit isn't ripe until it cracks open. Since that isn't a option for commercial use, the ones in the store are all "green". Also, when they are commercially processed, the seeds aren't extracted from all the membranes and rinds, it's included in the pulp and then filtered. ( oh, gross!) So, no commercial pomegranate for me, I'll stay a purist and get mine from my Aunt's tree, fix it right; and then freeze it!

I like pomegranite seeds but I agree with the others about them being a PITA to juice...buy the bottled juice & just use the seeds as garnish or forget them entirely & just use the juice & call that good.

Lars, you are soooo right about the passiflora vines! I planted a passiflora incarnata 3 years ago in the fall. The next April it had sent underground roots 10-15' from the baby cutting! I dug those things all summer long & never got them all. Since, I still get a couple sproots every spring. I've resorted to Round-Up something I'm ashamed to admit but the passiflora would eat our house if I don't get rid of them...

To juice a pomegranate, you roll the fruit on a surface under the palm of your hand over and over. Don't exert too much pressure, but use enough. Eventually, all the jell turns to juice. Then you make a little hole in the fruit and slowly squeeze it out. It sounds harder than it really is.

Cut the pomegranate in half crosswise, hold over a bowl and whack it all over with a heavy spoon or the flat side of cleaver. The seeds should fall right out. Then you can use a regular juicer on them. Don't hit them hard enough to break the skin.

Thank you for all the advice. I did buy a bottle of pomegranate juice just to be safe. But ever since i found this recipe it has been bugging me to figure out how to juice a pomegranate. I do not own a juicer. I am going to try to juice it by the blender and staining. Also i will try smashing it and making little holes. DH eats pomegranates all the time. I buy them, he peels them. Now i feel the need to conquer the pomegranate! Wish me luck!

If you put it in a blender, don't over blend it - you don't want to pulverize the seeds by pulsing a few times. I used a blender for making watermelon juice, but that's a lot easier to deal with than pomegranate.
