Schon engineered hardwood floor

My problem is in the surface coating (the polyurethane with aluminum oxide). If you even look at it, it scratches, only in the protective coating, not in the wood. We are very careful, do not wear shoes in the house, and ask visitors to remove their shoes, and yet, the gouges are there after only 3 weeks! It seems to me that this surface coating is too soft. Might this be a defect, and has anyone else experienced this? I've tried making repairs on a sample (left-over) board, but they were unsatisfactory, so I'm leaving the floor alone for now. I wrote to Lumber Liquidators asking for guidance on how to make repairs and if it would be possible to purchase some of the poly coating. All it said was "Sorry, no." Is it possible to repair these gouges?
