Wood vs. laminate...150# great dane

I've done a search and read all the archived posts on choosing laminate vs. real wood. We recently adopted an adorable 2 yr old 150# great dane...Diesel, we also have a 40 lb. basset hound. Because of our Georgia red clay, he's pretty much ruined the carpet in our living and dining rooms which was installed in 1995, so it was getting close to replacing anyway. Our basset has also had a few accidents, so I'm done with carpet.

Regardless of the type of flooring we install, both rooms will be covered with large, inexpensive area rugs.

I've read great reviews about Wilsonart and Armstrong Grand Illusions laminate floors, but am still on the fence: laminate vs. real wood. Overall, which is cheaper to install per sq. foot. I've done more research on laminate and really have no idea of what to look for in choosing read wood, ie. manufacturers, etc. Installation will be over a subfloor.

Thanks for your thoughts.
