Watergal, good for you. Which ones did you get - of those that are named? Post pix if they're blooming. I have the opposite problem. DH and I don't celebrate Valentine's Day. This year, though, he got me an orchid. Called up Orchids Ltd. Jerry Fischer answered. DH said, "Doomsday is upon us." Jerry laughed, man-to-man about the V Day thing. DH asked if there were anything I'd been eyeing. Jerry said he'd call him back. Next day, he called back and suggested Onc Twinkle 'Red.' No doubt, he looked at the record of what I'd bought there - musta taken him that whole day. :) Jerry asked about a card. Oh, yes, says DH, saying to write on the card "Another vegetable for the salad." Silence on the other end of the line. He lost Jerry right there. :) Ever since I exhibited some orchids in the Agriculture Bldg. at the State Fair, DH has called them vegetables. Before that, he asked if we could eat them. No. So, what good are they? The Twinkle is a lovely, full plant with 7 spikes..... and I wouldn't buy that large a plant today.... and I already have one that didn't come from O. Ltd..... and I hope it lives forever and ever because he gave it to me. So, Watergal, if your DH gotten you an orchid, it might not have been one you'd buy for yourself. Double-edged sword. Years ago, when I was a newly wed, I bought my husband a $3 bare root rose from bargain bin from HD on Valentines day. That was when I thought the difference between roses were their colors and all those fancy names were for marketing. That rose is a very full peddled light pink rose with a heavenly smell. Perfect "Victorian" shaped rose, and I always thought it was very "romantic". Last year, after I went bunkers for roses, I bought many roses that resembled the shape of this rose. I started with 6 David Austins and now I have over 20 plush two heaven on earth. But that pink rose is still my fav. Last spring I found its tag buried next to it: "Eglantyne"

If your rose made leaves there's a good chance it will work. Mine go into a one gallon clean plastic pot that I've drilled extra large holes all over the bottom, cover with a coffee filter, a bit of plant charcoal, and I use a mix of Supersoil planting mix, low in fertilizer, mixes with Cactus and Succulant mix. You just do not want any fertilizers maybe for a year or until real growth begins. The leaves might brown and fall off but if the branches look healthy that's the best trick. Before you put the branch in the moistened dirt cut the lower thorns off and any lower branches and put in just a drip of Rootone. Sounds like a lot of ingredients but you'll use all this for other experiments again and again..

Yes. A day spent with the grand kids is always a great day. I was super tired since I only got a couple hours sleep the night before but we had fun anyway. Grandson and I did puzzles whiles older sister was in preschool. He's really getting good at puzzles. He is doing pieced puzzles now, not just the shape in place ones. Then we all went to pick DGD up and came back to go through her Valentine's Day bag. Lots of candy and cards. :-) We then decorated heart cookies for the "party" that evening. On holidays like Valentines and St. Patrick's etc. DD and DSIL call it a "party". Usually pizza or other kids food's and special treats. I declined the invitation to stay and drug my weary body home and stopped for a tri tip dip for my dinner.
