anyone out there? They are nailing down my float floor

Do I need to stop this??

Wilsonart red label, 5 inch planks. The contractors said the seams on the sides were not locking tight enough, and they kept having to go back and knock them into place.

So instead, they are installing a whole row across the floor, and then putting two nails at the edge of the planks at the walls (will be covered by quarter round) to tack it down.

This is supposed to be Tap N Lock.

Will this effect the durability/performance of the floor??

The best way for you to solve this problem is to call Wilsonart customer service and tell them your problem and they will give you an answer. Then ask Wilsonart to Email, fax, or mail you the information so you can show your installer. "Here, this is what the manufacturer says". That's better than saying you got the information from some guy on the Garden Web.

Rule one for any installer is to contact the manufacturer about any installation problems instead of making up our own rules. As it is now the flooring is locked. Contact WA and then put your contractor on the phone.

Generally floating floors have moldings that fasten to the subfloor and lip over the edge of the floor leaving expansion space. There's no way they could snap on to the flooring since you'd have to meet with full length and width boards. Another option is to glue something down around the perimeter of the stair opening in the same thickness as the foam underlayment and glue down nosing and the flooring but there would be a risk that the floor could buckle due to lack of expansion space.

One option to consider is cork flooring. Have you thought about this? It's eco-friendly and about the same price as regular hard wood floors with labor included (although it is easy to do yourself I think). I personally have not had it done but have heard great things. Can a professional do the things your floor guy claims? Yes. absolutely. My only advice would be don't just rely on him and his word. go get 3 or 4 more pros out to give their opinion and estimate for the work.

OSB is referred to as 'plywood' as well. Proper underlayment plywood looks like a sheet of wood. OSB looks like potato chips glued into place - which is why some people refer to it as "chip board". You want to nail/glue to the real plywood. OSB/chip board can cause problems with both staples and adhesives.

if wilsonart tap n' lock wont go together, it is one of 4 problems.
1. installer has no idea how to install it
2. factory defective materials
3. installation is bowed (see #1 & #2)
4. subfloor height differential exceeds/varies beyond manufacturer specified tolerance limitations (SEE #1) and this is something the installer MUST check for prior to the install.
this product is NOT meant to be nailed ... EVER.

Make them stop immediately and get someone who knows what they are doing in there.

Here is the Wilsonart Tap 'n' Lock Installation Instructions ... please note where it specifically states:
"... Wilsonart Classic, Estate Plus, and Red Label Flooring products are installed as floating floors. This means the flooring is not glued or nailed to the subfloor. Never nail Wilsonart Flooring to the subfloor ..."

any nails will be couinterproductive to this floating flooring systems longevity and not allow it to expand and contract appropriately.

You have some very uneducated installers botching your investment!!!

That is a floating floor, It is not designed to be locked in where it can't swell and shrink on its own as one unit.

i doesnt matter what they nailed.

NONE of it can be nailed.

to do so voids the manufacturers completely.

That is a fact. I think the installer may be intending to go back and "set" the nails below the laminate later on, but the first nail voided any warranty you had.
