Size of SS liner for woodstove retrofit to FP

Saypoint zone 6 CT

We had a stainless liner installed in the chimney for our wood burning FP two years ago. We are now considering installing a woodstove in front of the fireplace for reasons of efficiency and because the FP smokes a bit.

The people at the FP store want to install a 6 inch ss liner inside of the 8x12 liner that's already there. I realize that the flue diameter affects the draft, but is this really necessary? It seems like a lot of expense when the chimney is already lined.

A guy at another FP store said that if I bought the stove from him, and had him install it, he would have to do the same thing, but that if I installed it myself, I could get away with a "starter kit" and install the pipe partway up into the existing liner, or use an adapter to go from 8x12 to 6".

Any advice?
