I've only ever tried the Jergen's moisturizer that slowly tans you. I only use it on my legs. I have sensitive skin and, luckily, haven't had any problems with that product. I like to wear skirts in the summer and I think a hint of color is required. It doesn't make me very tan, which is fine, just enough color so I'm not ghostly white.

I feel like I get enough color on my face and arms during my usual activities, always while wearing sunscreen. I've never been one who can stand to sunbathe.

Like hhireno, I use the Jergens and have been very pleased.

Actually I think I may be hhireno's separated-at-birth twin because I too use it only on my pasty white legs and it does create just enough color so I'm not embarrassed to show them. Aside from being very very pale, my legs are very very thin and not my best feature. With the Jergens at least I feel less self conscious about baring them.

If I remember correctly, we are both one of 5 sisters and like to read but thin legs is not a problem I have. Pale, yes. Thin legs, sadly no. My poor brother is the one that got the thinnest gams. Life can be cruel.

kellyeng this is timely - I was just thinking of posting the same thing as I applied my tanning lotion a couple of hours ago.

I bought L'Oreal Sublime Bronze Luminous Bronzer last fall on sale. Generally I don't care for L'Oreal products of any kind because they are all so highly perfumed and this is no exception but the price was right ;-) It's not the chemical tanning smell that bugs me but the strong fragrance they use in everything. And I have another bone to pick with this tanner - it has little flecks of glitter which I didn't know - probably should have read more carefully before purchase - so rarely put it on and actually go anywhere other than quick errands. I walked with a friend the other morning and she didn't notice till we stood in the sun and then commented that I was 'sparkling'! The tanning though, is excellent for me and it has a light instant bronzer so I can see where it is. Looking at their website, they have a lot of options but I'll look for a different, less perfumed brand when this is used up. I've also used the slower build up moisturizing lotions and don't care for them. I prefer my own moisturizer and faster tanning results.

So does anyone have a recommendation for a relatively fragrance free or softly scented tanner? I don't mind the traditional suntan lotion scents like Coppertone or Bain de Soleil.

I've had good luck with L'Oreal Sublime Bronze TAN FOR A DAY tinted gel. I mix it in my hand with a little moisturizer and rub it on. I use it on my arms almost daily, just to take the chill off my snowy white skin! Mixed with a dab of moisturizer, it doesn't really make me appear "tan," but just adds a hint of color, similar to what others have said about the Jergens product. I'm sure no one has any idea I have used a "tanning" product! If I wore skirts I'd use it on my legs for sure.

Only takes a few minutes to apply, so it's not as labor intensive as it may sound to use. It's nice to be able to wash it off and not worry about streaks or other mishaps than can occur as a self-tanner sets.

Btw, I've gotten caught out in the rain with it on plenty of times (Several times this week alone!) and it stayed on well. You really need to scrub it off with soap & water when you shower or bathe. Otherwise, it's pretty tenacious stuff.

Oh yes! I need to find a good self tanner. I'm a redhead so sunless tanning is the way to go. I've used Jergen's in the past, but have a terrible time remembering to use it daily. I'm hoping there's something out there that tans quickly and looks real. Preferably without glitter. Thanks for the heads up on L'Oreal Deb.

Thank you Yaya! I wish our daughter would use these. She tans well, but hasn't had the time because of active duties so she's gone to tanning booths. They scare the heck out of me. She's now going reserve, but will be living in Hawaii with her new husband so I'm sure she'll be lying on the beach to tan. At least I have her convinced how important sun screen is. My Mom had skin cancer twice. Not the kind that can spread to other parts of ones body, but still very serious.

I looked at some other review sites over the weekend and one that comes up again and again based on quality and value is Banana Boat. It's also in the list from yayagal. The ones that have a tint to them are easier to apply because you can see missed spots immediately.

I still like the brand Fake Bake. They have different kinds but I've always used the original lotion and really like it.

It has a color guide and you'd want to apply it at night but it gives a very natural brown color. I like the color best after about three nights of application.

That said, I haven't tried any of the newer sunless tanners on the market and after my current bottle is gone I might check out the Banana Boat.

I used something last year that DH ordered from one of the home shopping channels (yeah, yeah) and it worked beautifully - but it also ruined my sheets. You were supposed to apply at night, which I did, allow to dry, which I did - but because I have menopausal night sweats, you can imagine how it affected my sheets. I was nice and tan for the first week of our vacation in Mexico, then blotchy by the second week after it started to wear off. I couldn't bring myself to reapply it and risk somebody else's sheets.

I have actually briefly toyed with going and getting a few sessions in a tanning bed, as we're soon off to the beach again and I keep trying to tell myself that tan cellulite is less noticeable than white cellulite. But I'm not going to do it. For one thing, it's hell on tattoos and I've invested too much $ in mine to ruin them that way. Not to mention the dangerous health implications. ::sigh::

I'm with Shee in that my pasty skin isn't white "enough" to be pretty. I saw a young woman over the weekend who had the most gorgeous porcelain white skin, and she was dressed in shorts and a tank top. She didn't look odd. She was stunning. Unfortunately, years of tanning in my youth left me with less than gorgeous skin, but since it is MY skin, I'm just gonna try to be comfortable in it as it is, and keep protecting it.

I would use sunless products more often if it weren't for the smell. I don't use them at night because I don't want to subject my husband to the odor, plus I'd have to be constantly changing the sheets to get rid of the smell. I have used the L'oreal products and like them. I will admit to being "bad" and using a tanning bed to get color before a beach vacation. Then, when I'm on vacation I slather myself with sunscreen, stay under umbrellas and seek the shade whenever possible.
I have had one spray tan at a salon and it turned out really well, but was spendy.

I'll bet if you went to a beach in South Korea you would see quite a few with porcelain skin. With all the beach umbrellas they don't seem to be sun worshippers.

I just found one in my bathroom cupboard -I must have purchased it last year. It is from Bath & Body Works, and is called Sweatpea Sunless Tanning. I really like it. It has a light, very nice scent.

Not sure why but fat & cellulite somehow looks less bumpy when tanned! Look at the Biggest Loser before and after pictures. The before pics are always pale and the after pics are tan.

I think porcelain white skin is very pretty but it looks best when the skin is also "baby" flawless.

Well, I went to the gym this morning and everyone was pretty impressed. They said I wasn't too tan but just looked like I spent the weekend outside.

Fake Bake is the best, IMO. It's easy to put on, comes with a mit, and you can see the color going on your skin so it's pretty hard to mess it up.

Looks natural and it darkens a bit over a few hours, but you get a tan as soon as you apply it. I put mine on in the morning before I clean house. I don't like wearing fresh stuff like that to bed.

I have fair skin so I use only one application per week.
