tricky! Can fireplace be changed to raised hearth fireplace?

Our fireplace has a firebox that is flush with the floor. I would really like a raised hearth fireplace, for a place to sit in front of the fire. It would look better proportioned, the room is plenty big, etc. The house and fireplace is 15 years old and all according to code. The chimney is probably 30 feet tall (two story home).

This would mean that the firebox and smoke chamber, etc. would have to be ripped out and rebuilt. The problem is, how would we support the flue while firebox work is being done? I talked to a mason, who said he never heard of it being done. But that was just one mason, so others may have different opinions.

I would not attempt this myself, but want to know if it is even possible. If you have any ideas, or could point me in the right direction, I would really appreciate it. THanks in advance!
