Comments (7)Actually, I think the term you wanted to used was 'raised firebox' but I think we all understood your question. ;-) By 'no mantle' and 'no surround' do you mean that the firebox will be installed flush into the wall with painted sheetrock coming right up to the edge of the firebox on all sides? Like this image ... I think maybe a simple concrete bench made that fits flush with the bottom of the raised firebox and is the same width as the box or 36 to 24 inches wider than the box would look nice. Maybe in a style like one of these: Concrete can be faux finished to coordinate with other finished like marble, granite, etc. And, if you ever decide that you no longer want the bench in front of the fireplace, a concrete bench, even one with a faux finish, can find a new home in your garden....See MoreHaving second thoughts about raised hearth fireplace
Comments (16)Thank you so much for all your ideas and opinions. Thankfully the builder told me we can wait until the house is framed to make a decision on it. Whew. He even suggested using cardboard to mock up our furniture arrangement- for the fireplace decision as well as electrical outlet and air vent decisions. I really do love working with our builder. As I keep trying to find the fireplace style I lIke, I keep gravitating to more formal white wood mantel and surrounds with matte black tile/stone (not sure what the material is). I guess I like the idea of how a raised hearth functions but I prefer the look of a hearth that's flush to the floor....See MoreRaised Hearth vs. Flush Hearth & VC Chateau vs. Lennox Montebello
Comments (7)So much depends on the overall look you want for your home. That determines the size and placement of the fps. Exposed beams and stone of any sort sounds traditional. For your great room, I'd go for a raised hearth and a surround, mantel and overmantel that are in scale with the room. And that means large! The trend here in master suite fireplaces is to mount them about three feet high without the traditional wood fp trappings at all. A matter of taste. I put in three-four fireplaces in every home I build; and none in any home are the same. For instance, below is another fp in the same home as in the "building a home thread" thread. But since this is the kids' play area in a small basement room (as you'd probably guess from the photo), we scaled the fp accordingly. Kingsman gas fireplace, Century Stone concrete brick surround, raised Indiana limestone hearth...See MoreFireplace hearth questions
Comments (6)These questions can only be answered by the original installation instructions. Factory fireplace detailing is limited to those instructions because that is the way they were tested but it is unlikely there will be any detail for blocking the vents so doing so would be a code violation which would cause you trouble collecting insurance repair funds if there was ever a fire. I would either replace the unit with a direct vent fireplace or hire a professional floor refinisher who would have no trouble refinishing the floor without damaging the flush hearth tile and leave the fireplace alone. The refinisher might even allow you to install the tile after the floor is refinished....See Moreelphaba_gw
