UM, sex..UM, I remember it was good but, I'll be darned if I can remember what it was!

I do however, remember lobster drowning in butter.

I prefer to mix the two.....specially when my incredibly sexy sous chef makes homemade pasta. The time the dough needs to rest is the best time of all ; )

Kale and collards do very well in my zone, and it is true, they benefit from a frost (which we are getting already!). I did plant the green glaze collard after our little bit of frosty wheather, and they still tasted good, this is why I mentioned them. A nice green that does really well in warm weather is amaranth. There are several varieties and some have leaves that are sizable to use as wraps. However, because of the oxalic acid they should be cooked. There is also New Zealand spinach, but the nutritional profile is nowhere that of collards (or kale). So yes, people in z9-11 still want to grow the Brassica oleraceas, because they are the most nutritious! and some of us eat primarily out of our gardens, summer and winter. Or what passes for winter around here. I just call it warm season and cool season gardening. Mauirose I want some of that chard! Happy, I took my kale out and planted a bunch of onions on that bed, to try to discourage the squirrel. It figured out it (they) like chard! Now they are 'planting' pecans all over my beds to try to store them for the winter, the silly things. Because of them we get pecan 'trees' sprouting all over the place in the spring.

In addition to looking at raw yields, the University of Michigan scientists also examined the common concern that there aren't enough available sources of non-synthetic nitrogen-compost, manure, and plant residues-in the world to support large-scale organic farming. For instance, in his book Enriching the Earth: Fritz Haber, Carl Bosch, and the Transformation of World Food Production, Vaclav Smil argues that roughly two-thirds of the world's food harvest depends on the Haber-Bosch process, the technique developed in the early 20th century to synthesize ammonia fertilizer from fossil fuels. (Smil admits that he largely ignored the contribution of nitrogen-fixing crops and assumed that some of them, like soybeans, are net users of nitrogen, although he himself points out that on average half of all the fertilizer applied globally is wasted and not taken up by plants.) Most critics of organic farming as a means to feed the world focus on how much manure-and how much related pastureland and how many head of livestock-would be needed to fertilize the world's organic farms. "The issue of nitrogen is different in different regions," says Don Lotter, an agricultural consultant who has published widely on organic farming and nutrient requirements. "But lots more nitrogen comes in as green manure than animal manure." Looking at 77 studies from the temperate areas and tropics, the Michigan team found that greater use of nitrogen-fixing crops in the world's major agricultural regions could result in 58 million metric tons more nitrogen than the amount of synthetic nitrogen currently used every year. Research at the Rodale Institute in Pennsylvania showed that red clover used as a winter cover in an oat/wheat-corn-soy rotation, with no additional fertilizer inputs, achieved yields comparable to those in conventional control fields. Even in arid and semi-arid tropical regions like East Africa, where water availability is limited between periods of crop production, drought-resistant green manures such as pigeon peas or groundnuts could be used to fix nitrogen. In Washington state, organic wheat growers have matched their non-organic neighbor's wheat yields using the same field pea rotation for nitrogen. In Kenya, farmers using leguminous tree crops have doubled or tripled corn yields as well as suppressing certain stubborn weeds and generating additional animal fodder. The Michigan results imply that no additional land area is required to obtain enough biologically available nitrogen, even without including the potential for intercropping (several crops grown in the same field at the same time), rotation of livestock with annual crops, and inoculation of soil with Azobacter, Azospirillum, and other free-living nitrogen-fixing bacteria."

Is a garden near roads/toxic areas better than no garden at all?

Dj...I'm so glad you're going ahead with a garden. Maybe you can get other neighbors and community members involved! I do agree that probably planting anything helps negate some pollution. I imagine planting air purifying plants (like the spider fern) would also be beneficial...maybe around the edges of the garden so much pollution gets taken up by the non-edibles? I've also thought maybe something like Tulsi (Holy Basil) would be a good idea as it can do things like remove fluoride from water and detox radiation. The community garden I started at my apartment complex uses railroad ties as its surroundings (not my choice, but still grateful for anything). I noticed any leaves touching the railroad ties would become dry, brittle and eaten away...so the carcinogens definitely affect plants and they are taking up that toxin. However, I was never able to find if the toxins stopped before the fruits/vegetables or if those toxins also leaked into the food I'm eating. Either way - hopefully all the holy basil and fresh, nutrient-dense foods I grow/eat will help combat any negatives of planting within railroad ties.

I would say no. But there are two schools of thought about that. Check the link below if you're interested. How big is your plant? What type of Jasmine you've got? What exposure? Like Sharon, I prefer to mix the two. Bread has to rise SOMETIME, and beef marinates and soup simmers.....um hmmmm.

Then again, I guess it depends upon who you are having sex with. Hopefully it's with a partner, LOL, because chocolate cake would definitely be better than sex by yourself.

To me, comparing food to sex is an apples to oranges thing. That article appeared to be mostly publicity for the chef's restaurants.

There are some foods I like almost as much as sex, because they are luscious and when I start eating them I just want to eat more and more. To me, that's the fruits, which come from the sex organs of the plants mostly anyway. Peaches, pears, strawberries, pineapple, raspberries, melon, apples, kiwi, oranges, etc. Fruit and vanilla pudding or tapioca! Fruit in any kind of luscious dessert. Then comes chocolate.

And I disagree about the whole wheat bread. I get these big whole wheat french loaves and they are a slice of heavan. Well actually, I take my inspriation from Omar Khayyam:

A loaf of bread beneath the bough,
A jug of wine, a book of verse,
And thou,
Beside me, singing in the wilderness.
Ah wilderness would be paradise enough!

Hmmm. There's good food and bad food. There's good sex and bad sex. And to me, the bad of each is equally disappointing and the good is... well, not quite equal! :)

The picture of the chocolate cake on the website was pretty nice eye candy, and I suspect it tasted as good.

My meal would be a Dungeness crab. Artichoke and garlic bread, mayo and lemon, a nice oaky chardonnay.

I have lusted after a slice of coconut cake at a local place, but haven't succumbed to its allure for fear of disappointment.

But sexy? Let's just say that there's a time and place for everything.

Anyone recall Samantha's sushi-making in the first Sex and the City movie? If you try to mix sex and food, you may get disappointed in one or the other. ;-o

In December I went to a new local winery that has a chocolate dessert wine named "Meglio del Sesso" which is Italian for better than sex. I don't normally like dessert wines, but this one comes close to living up to its name.

Food cannot compete. When love is involved, thoughts of food go out the window. I could never compare an intimate relationship to a meal. Meals are much more forgettable, no matter how fantastic they are. They are also much easier to reproduce through written recipes - something that is rather difficult to achieve in a relationship. Food is much more predictable and easier to control, and if you prefer predictability over spontaneity, then food would be your choice. I had this question posed to me decades ago, and so I've had time to think about it. It's like comparing an intoxicating fragrance to an enchanting melody - it just depends on which sense pleases you more.

If you combine food and sex, then food is just an accessory and not the main course.

I agree with Lars, food is an accessory.
HOWEVER my first thought was...homemade whipped cream...nuff said. :-)

Oh and I do recall a time many years ago when I gave DH a coupon for Thanksgiving dinner....on me. Never looked at the dining room table the same way again!

I have thought more about this, trying to elevate my consciousness and evaluate the issue from angles both refined and earthy.

My conclusion is that the best sex, with someone you deeply love, eclipses any possible meal. Average sex, with someone you generally like, also beats every meal. Mediocre sex, with someone whose name you can't quite recall - I suppose food might have a fighting chance. Probably depends on how long it's been since you've had either.

Sorry, Food. There is no contest.

You know what does compare well to sex? Cooking. Way more fun than eating, more intellectually interesting than sex, and lasts longer than either.

Okay, this has gotten embarrassing enough. I think I'll go and . . . eat something.
