Worthless new stuff

My soon to be ex has boxes of unopened, never used cosmetics. Does anyone have 400 bottles of nail polish? We have a 10x 12 closet with boxes piled 6 ft deep. Some used, mostly new. I assign value by weight, not quantity. If I have trouble easily lifting a box, I assume it's worth a lot. We are beyond individual counting. Could we donate them to a non- profit?

Your local Goodwill will probably take them and give you a receipt and have you assign the value.

I would value them somewhere around 50 cents to $1 per bottle. Take photos of them before they leave your house, just in case you get audited.

You could also contact the Domestic Violence group in your area. It would help those women and young girls feel so much better. Also some churches have supplies to give either the homeless or low income people. I just donated a bunch of small soap/toothbrushes etc to my local church.
Also some youth group homes might take some.

Maybe you should amend the soil and mulch. I know you were talking about throwing good money after bad, but amending the soil will be useful if you ever pull those trees out and mulch will either be plastic and last you many seasons or you will put some organics down and when it decays you will have a higher humus content in your soil and it will hold onto the water better. Hell you could even work some of that cross linked polyacrilamide gel into the soil to hold onto the water really well, I would imagine that it would be worth your time to get a little auger and drill 50-100 10" deep holes and add the granules to them if it meant less time watering. Mycorrhizal fungi might also be of some help since mostly what they are good for is increasing a plants drought tolerance by expanding the reach of the root system.

I go to Good Will stores where I often run into local business women and yeah.....doctor's wives. It's called voluntary bottom feeding, and many people who are concerned with environmental issues shop there. Re-use, recycle, repair. I do not shop the box stores, it's also a moral choice because I want my dollars to stay local. As for medicaid recipients buying high end merchandise at Good Will.....what explains the salon nails and hair, 4G phones and tatooes? I don't suppose that was supplied by either GW or the 1%. I think this is starting to float to policital again, so I'll not comment further other than to say, with the economy and trade in general in such a state of flux, I'm assuming that what is/is not poverty and how much and where intervention is needed is going to be the subject of much discussion for some time to come. Some positive direction may come of this. It's not the first time we've faced similar difficulties and it won't be the last. It's cyclical and always has been, and sooner or later enough interprise and insipiration floats to the top and things adjust. It's just not easy in the interim.

Electron: is it worthless?

I have had Electron in three different places. My first plant I bought back in 1975, and from the time it was planted to the time my mom finally had to get rid of the roses back in 2006 or 2007 that rose was a workhorse. It always had large bright pink flowers and would survive just about anything, even the blackspot. The plant I had at my other house in WA state was doing okay, but it had issues with rust. If I could keep the diseases off it, the plant would be okay, but it was never as strong a grower in my yard as it was in other areas. I think it was probably the soil as much as anything. The plant I have here will put out some flowers, but it has never gotten over that awful Easter 07 freeze. It still seems to be struggling somewhat, but it is on the mend. I hope it will come along better. Perhaps this will provide a glimpse into Electron. I think it is a good rose, but it has always required some time to get properly established.

I've been using both ABS and PVC for over 25 years and in different places across the US, each with different rules and regulations, most of which is not based in solid science. ABS hands down beats PVC in direct sun and also under homes in indirect sunlight. In Hawaii, PVC becomes brittle within a year. It pits, shatters, cracks and crumbles. ABS doesn't do any of that. As an inspector I see this every day. An ABS roof vent pipe can last 15 years in heat and sun without being painted. ABS is more expensive than PVC. While ABS is not used for water pipe, PVC and not CPVC is still being used as water supply in Hawaii. Both should be outlawed as toxic for water. Sched. 80 PVC fairs much better than Sched. 40. Sched. 80 is grey and a bit softer. Yes about the primer purple for inspections. On Farms and ranches you can see crumbled remains of long runs of original PVC, right next to newer and flexible and safer HDPE tubing. If one looks close at larger diameter ABS, you can sometimes see its "foam" core. Like one comment said - If you hit ABS with a hammer, it's unlikely you'll break it, but try that with PVC and it will break easily - shatter even. Once a plumber from Australia told me that some places banned ABS because of the gases released when it burns in a house fire or when it's cut too fast by plumbers. I'm sure the health of plumbers was not on a politicians mind when banning ABS. ABS will burn continually once it starts, whereas PVC supposedly self extinguishes. Not sure that burning carpet and every other thing in a house fire is any less toxic. But to answer the question - ABS is much more expensive (in Hawaii anyway) than PVC. And maybe in the end its the same because you'll buy and replace 3 to 4 times PVC to 1 time ABS. And seriously, it's just plain greed when a 3" ABS cap fitting that used to cost 2-5 dollars is now over $20 in 2024.

I agree, a women's shelter seems the best place for cosmetic items. I used to sell Avon, and I had loads of "samples", you know, tiny lipsticks, single-use blush, shampoos,etc. I kept them in a box long after I stopped selling Avon. (Not a good thing for me, I'm not real friendly and don't have a huge network of friends to buy Avon, plus Avon constantly hasseled me to meet bigger and bigger goals.) I gave the box to a local women's shelter. The rep I handed it to was very happy, she said women and kids in shelters don't have a lot of "luxury" and beauty items, they even ask for donations of bath soap and kleenex. I felt so good about donating the Avon I even wrote the group a small donation check! Win-Win.

First time checking out this forum....be aware that not all shelters, etc, may want or even be allowed to accept opened/used items - check first!

If nothing else, put them on craigslist( if you have it where you are) in the free section for curb pick up. They are worth something to someone.

Cavell said the cosmetics were unopened,unused. The Avon samples I donated were also sealed. I would never donate anything open or used. Cosmetics begin to degrade as soon as they're exposed to air, plus I'd worry about possible "tampering" if I bought or sold open stuff.
