Compare current price of face cord

I am buying my first face cord for my new Jotul insert. The price- $60.00 up from $35 or $40 a few years ago (so I hear from a wood burning friend.) Where is that price in the range these days? I'm in upstate NY.

It is illegal for them to sell a "face" cord. Only full cords or fractions of cords (i.e. 1/2, 1/4 cord) is allowed. They are trying to rip you off. Find someone to buy from that will sell you a legal amount.

This guy is a rather nice guy who sells apples at the farmers market and he has never sold wood before, so he might be ignorant himself. If you can direct me to the other thread, I'll read it. I'm ignorant myself. Thanks. Leslie

About 5 years ago we installed a Carrier system with a Carrier Electronic Air Cleaner. I was somewhat disappointed, because I saw some dust collect on the blower cover just beneath the Air Cleaner within a couple of weeks after cleaning the unit. Because I thought (wrongly) that this whoop de doo unit was much better somehow than an ordinary pleated filter, I put up with the normal snapping sounds when dust hit the thing and got zapped, the nuisance of cleaning the filters and occasionally replacing the wires that sometimes broke. Finally, it stopped making those zaps, and I asked my maintenance contract mechanic to repair it--he just took the dumb grids out, and replaced them with an Air Bear 8 pleated filter--are you certain THAT will be as good as my high-tech wonder filter I asked--he just laughed. Before putting it in, he wiped the blower case clean--after the Air Bear was in a couple of months, I took it out and looked--and the blower case was still clean. Wouldn't have happened with the electronic unit. My unscientific verdict: the electronic air cleaner is a rip-off--don't waste your money!

I personally liked the Woodwright...I got it from a local lumberyard at a relatively decent price and the install was a snap. I wouldn't worry about the longevity of the Fibrex, I know that they invented it in 1970 and tested it for 25 years before making windows out of it...Andersen has been around longer than any manufacturer (since 1903) and for obvious reasons; they wouldnt release something that would fail. Side note: make sure you do order it with SmartSun because that will qualify for the new energy tax credit. I'd personally stay away from Fiberglass unless you like to maintain your windows...Just like any quality Fiberglass entry door, you will need to paint and maintain ANY fiberglass product, regardless of "coating systems." Read the warranties....Unfortunately, this is a FACT. From opinions I've heard and research on the web be wary of the Pella line as i'm not sure if the class action lawsuit against their aluminum clad product has fizzled or not....I do know that if you do ANY search on Pella problems waaaaayyy too many pages come up with customer complaints. I'd stay away from that. I'd personally wonder why any company uses Aluminum to clad wood...why don't we clad our homes with aluminum anymore??? hmmmmm

We haven't reached the install phase yet, but are so far pleased with Precision Cabinets in Brentwood in CA. Worth a visit if they are in driving distance. You can see the factory and talk to them in person. They use CalDoors for the doors. They don't offer frameless, but do offer 'mini-frame' instead, where the face frame is just about the size of the wall width. Much more reasonable in price than any of the commission-based lines and completely custom sizing. Very knowledgeable and came to our house 3 times so far (and they haven't started building the cabs yet). Pointed out issues early -- told we needed to make a certain wall an inch longer and why, explained why certain cabinets were deeper than others (for fine details, like having the countertop next to an oven cab die into it instead of stick out), were particular about visual issues (e.g. in our freezer-pantry run they added the same spacing needed on the face frame to do the integrated panel door on one end to the cupboards on the other so it would look balanced), made adjustments 1/8 of an inch adjustments to a lazy susan corner cab to truly center the window after I failed to have the window installed to allow any wiggle room, work with our contractor to design special chaseways to anchor iron steel supports under counter to cabinets and cabinets to floor joists, measured our spice jars so they can build a special recessed wall cabinet to hold them, have experience installing panelled doors on integrated appliances and can do it on a second visit after initial install, etc, etc. They are pickier than me -- it's a great feeling. We were so pleased with their seeming expertise and attention to detail that we are having them do vanities and cabinets in both bathrooms as well. firsthouse_mp used them for their cabinets (with photos)

mgmum, I never heard of stoves having outlets! How awesome! Maybe my induction range has one or two -- it wasn't a feature I knew to look for. (I picked an induction range for my new build -- I simply figured go inexpensive for the stove I'm going to leave behind here!) This house was built in 1968, plus or minus a year -- they didn't really keep great records back then. When the guys came to replace the old stove, they marveled at it -- it was apparent that it dated from the original build. It did still work -- well, three burners and the oven, and if you cooked something meant to cook at 350 F, set the dial at 375... -- but it never had a clock or timer, and there were some parts that were not remotely cleanable any more. The other "feature" was that it was hot wired in, which I am given to understand is a fire hazard waiting to happen and no one has done that for YEARS, so I'm seriously glad it's gone. Fortunately one of the delivery guys was also an electrician on the side, so he was able to take care of this, then and there. (He told me that if the other delivery crew had been sent out, they'd have just left the new stove in the middle of my tiny kitchen floor, and I'd have to call in an electrician -- which would have been very interesting for about a week dodging around it, because I didn't have any other possible time that week to take off from work...)

A full cord measures 4 feet x 4 feet x 8 feet.

A half-cord is 2 feet x 4 feet x 8 feet.

Prices vary across the country. In Baltimore, the going rate is $160 delivered for a full cord, $90 for a half-cord. I'm going to guess that prices will climb as the cold weather approaches.

It has been reported that here in New Mexico a full cord is currently going for $230.

CT, full cord $160 to $185 and rising. Make sure to specify what maximum length you want. I got burned. About 1/4 of my delivery was much longer than the 20" I asked for.

I looked at the thread you mentioned, Xanndra. Thanks. Also, I called cooperative extension today to ask about cord prices. In this area a full cord can range from 140 - 180. I was told a face cord is 1/3 of a cord.

Suburbs west of Boston - $260 per cord, delivered. Got the guys name from a local fireplace/stove store. The wood was pretty clean and cut to the right size. I didn't shop around because I was worried about wood quality and needed to order right away. Will shop for a better deal earlier next year!

Here in VT cordwood is going for $160-$175 on average for seasoned wood. In Manchester the vacationers with the million dollar condos are being charged $225.

These days a face cord has to be defined by the length of the pieces of wood.

You are correct in that a traditional face cord is one-third of a full cord...16" pieces stacked 4' by 8'.

With small woodstoves and larger fireplace boxes, etc, the depth can be anything these days, so when ordering a face cord specify how long you want the wood to be and make sure that's what you get.

I'd hate to order a face cord expecting 16" lengths and be delivered 12" lengths.

The term "face cord" is illegal to use in Connecticut. Only full cords or specific fractions may be sold. If someone is selling you a face cord, don't buy from the thief.

Cut about 3 cords last year, have already cut 3 cords this year to use next year. Mainly oak, cherry and a little walnut this year.

Cost of Chainsaw: $143
Chains: $40
Gas for Truck and Saw: $30
Oil for saw: $6

Advantage of living in the country and nice farmers with free trees: PRICELESS

Average cost of "face cord" so far: $18.25

Highest heating bill in 3000 sq foot house (new and nicely insulated): $52
