Custom cabinets less expensive than showroom/big box?
Comments (6)I've roughly compared prices to Brookhaven, Ikea, Scherr's, and a local SF area cabinet guy (I suspect the bay area is as overpriced as NoVA). Very rough comparisons of course because by the time we get a quote we have a new plan but our space is small enough it can't change TOO much! The custom guy was about the same price as Brookhaven BUT did a lot more custom stuff for the price, like weird sizes, custom depths, and creative strange things. His price also included installation, which the BH didn't. I don't think my BH quote included any custom sizes--I think it's possible with that line but the KD at that particular shop kind of ignored our wishes... Ikea was less than a fifth the price, but of course wasn't all custom fitted to our space and doesn't include installation. Scherr's was about 2x Ikea for a paint-ready cabinet. So, fully custom, but unassembled and unfinished. I'm not sure how Brookhaven compares to Kraftmaid on the price (or quality) scale, but I did like that my custom guy would do full custom (very helpful in a small space) as well as installation for around the same price. He sounded a little skittish about frameless though so we may go with Scherr's. They're helpful and have some great customer reviews. If you're willing to do a little DIY OR pay your GC to do some extra work, it might be worth asking them for a quote. Some people here have picked out their cabinets at a bigbox store and then ordered them online for less. So, even if you decide to go KM, you can still shop around....See MoreDiamond cabinet brand buying in kitchen store vs big box
Comments (2)When I was buying and researching a few years ago, the construction specs for Diamond and Thomasville were not exactly the same. The backs of the Diamond were thicker than the Thomasville for one thing. I can't remember off hand if there were other differences. Looking at Thomasville and Diamond catalogs, they look exactly alike....See MoreGood source for cabinet hardware other than Big Blue/Orange
Comments (7)Where do you live? Someone may have a local store reference. For instance, if you're anywhere in the San Diego area, San Diego Hardware has a *huge* selection/display of hardware. ...1,000 door locks, 3,000 hinges and 7,000 knobs and pulls... I find being able to actually touch and see potential hardware choices to be invaluable. (I admit it! I'm a hardware groper.) I'm sure stores like this exist in other parts of the country. Comments (2)I used cabinetrydirect 4 years ago and had an absolutely wonderful experience with Ken. The price for beaded inset in cherry was about 1/4 - 1/3 less than the prices from other companies that we looked into. And the best part for me was no annoying KD. I got to do the whole design and implementation myself, my own choices, my own budget, no one dictating what I "should" or "should not" have. I got to line price items and adjust them myself according to my budget as needed. (I'm a bit of a control freak, can you tell? :-)) Ken was wonderful also. Sometimes difficult to get in touch with on the phone but very responsive through email. He doesn't really help you with design so much and the process will go really smooth if you know what you're doing regarding design, sizes, etc. He works really well with people like me. If you're needy and need a lot of handholding, he may not be your guy. Delivery was on time and very personal. The couple who drove the cabinets up to MN from MS were so sweet, unloaded everything, and drove through a hurricane (literally) to meet my delivery deadline. I could go on and on with positive things. Not to mention the quality of the cabs! :-) Here are some pics and the link to my finished kitchen below: Here is a link that might be useful: My Finished kitchen by cabinetrydirect...See Morejoaniepoanie
