Gas Fireplace won't light
Comments (36)I have had the same problem. I took the logs off and found that there was a ball of black carbon about the size of a marble at the end of an appendage coming from the main burner. . I vacuumed that off and cleaned all of the unit. Re lit the pilot and then turned it on. It worked for about 5 minutes and then shut off. I took it apart again and cleaned it off again and this time some rust and a small piece came off of the burner appendage. It looks like about a 2 inch piece with a hollow center coming off the center of the burner itself. Is there a way to fix this? Comments (15)Since your fireplace is not against an outside wall, that does pose complications. A direct vent fireplace would be complicated and costly to install. But you might consider a direct vent gas stove, either cast iron or soapstone. These are free-standing units that have to be some distance from combustible surfaces (the wall behind and on either side of the stove), and they have to stand on a noncombustible surface such as brick, tile, or slate. There would be a chimney that goes up from the rear of the stove to the ceiling, through the ceiling, and continuing on through the roof to the outside. If yours is a 2-story house, the cost would of course be higher than if it is a on-story house, and you'd have to figure out where the chimney would occupy space in your upper floor(s), peferrably in a closet where it would not be seen. A friend of mine had such a system in their 2-story house, but it was planned before construction, whereas yours would be retrofitted. All of this sounds complicated and expensive, and probably is, which is probably why the previous owner put in ventless. Although electric would not give you the kind of performance you get from gas, I would not dismiss it. Some electric units are pretty good. Just stay away from gas ventless....See MoreGas Fireplace - Heat and Glo Problem - Video URL attached - Help!

Comments (2)I can handle the structure part. I can run my own gas line. I can install the new gas fireplace. My problem is how to continue the exhaust from the basement through the new gas fireplace. How big does the flue from the basement have to be? Can it possibly be run right next to the new fireplace on the main floor? Like if the new fireplace is 3 feet wide, maybe I can make a one foot cavity on both sides going floor to ceiling so it would still look symmetrical with one of the cavities containing the flue from the basement wood burning fireplace....See Morerick_m_2008
