Small sectional sofas?

We have just finished remodelling our kitchen and family room area and want to get a sectional sofa for the family room but have been stymied trying to find the right combination of small AND comfortable. Being short-legged folks, we prefer sofas that aren't too deep-seated (maybe around 24-27") but want something suitably cozy and comfortable to curl up on for reading, napping, whatever. Most of what we find are very deep seated and very squishy so that we sink way in and have to crawl out OR they are much firmer and more formal with hard arms and no cush-y at all...can anyone suggest brands that we might look at that might be a both small and comfy? Thanks!

We ordered the Theodore sectional from Clayton Marcus and are anxiously awaiting its arrival. We got the Right Arm Facing Sofa and the Left Arm Facing Loveseat. Our living room is oddly laid out and we have competing focal points, which is why we chose a sectional. I know Rowe also makes some smaller sectionals, such as the Brentwood.

Thanks, mrsmarv. It turns out that brand is carried at a store just 2 miles from my home and we hadn't even thought of going there for some reason! I'm going to go check them out tomorrow.

Elenal here: I found a small leather sectional that met our needs in re style, quality, and size. It is by Custom Leather (a smallish company based in Arizona, but with a store here in Colorado). The sectional was custom sized to fit our room. I was looking for something with very simple lines (since the space is so small), so it wouldn't work in a French country setting. But they did have a few styles with more of a traditional styling. Leather quality is quite fine; I wouldn't say of the H&M level, but it was adequate for our needs and size (and, to a lesser extent, style) had to dominate our decision. Cost was 3900 for an 85 x 85" leather sectional. I saw one that was just a few inches longer on each end by American Leather (also with clean lines, not ultra comtemporary, but definitely with a squared off look) that was very nice at Crate and Barrel. But those few inches extra ruled it out for our very small room. I'm glad others have weighed in with some other brands to look at. Good luck. BTW, I saw on-line that Restoration Hardware is now stocking some smaller-sized sectionals in traditional looks--expensive, but quite nice looking, IMHO.

Sectional couches can easily overpower a room. I've never seen one pretty enough to make it the focal point, so I'd take the opportunity to replace it with something that enhances the room. That's a beautiful fireplace. Please don't ruin it by mounting a TV over the mantel. Nobody wants to watch TV looking up at a 30-45 degree angle anyway unless you're in a doctor's office waiting room. Hopefully, there's a matching built-in to the left of the fireplace. I'd have the shelving professionally rebuilt to accommodate an articulating wall-mounted flat screen TV without making it appear mismatched to the built-in on the right. The TV would be flush in the (rebuilt) shelving portion with the ability to tilt down and either direction sideways slightly. All of the wiring would be terminated in jacks directly behind the TV for a clean, built-in look. The furniture layout in the pictures isn't too bad, but it's spaced too far apart and the rug is too large. Shrink the rug by at least 30% and make it more rectangular (lengthwise toward the fireplace). Use area rugs to accent a room (and for some noise control), not to cover an otherwise great looking floor. Some better (less square!) tables with a mixture of wood and black iron legs would look great with that fireplace. You should be able to walk comfortably between any furniture and those nice windows. If there was ever a room that begged for furniture to be moved away from the walls and windows, this is it. Add a decorative free-standing fireplace screen (doesn't need mesh since there is already a functional screen behind it) to give the fireplace even more dimension and prominence. I'd get rid of the rug in the dining area and put a rectangular pub height table and wood chairs there. I'd might lower the light fixture a bit to give the table a more intimate setting, even though it's part of a larger room. I'd make sure that particular fixture was on a good dimmer, which probably means incandescent bulbs. Those are some quick ideas. You have a terrific room to work with.

The media room is in the basement. The level is open when you come down the stairs. The column separates the space into a 21' by 15' area with the fireplace (our media room) and a 22'by 12' area on the other side of the column. The only windows in this space are the small basement well windows. There are four other/adjoining rooms. Only one affects the media space...you enter it at the back of the media space.

I would put the TV on the long wall (dining room side) and float the sectional facing it (back to entry). Then you can maybe fit an arm chair and small side table in the bay window area, to complete the grouping and give a bit of conversational possibility.

I know Pottery Barn has a smaller sectional - A friend bought it for her den and it fits very nicely.

I'm so anxious to see how you solve this, because after my own ordeal, I know what you're up against. For me, the problem was the depth. I had an interior designer work with the room diagram and they came up with an arrangement that was nothing like what I'd envisioned. Since you are short, the depth comes into play for you as well. You may find, that most of what's available is at LEAST 36" deep. Most are much deeper.

I looked at the dimensions on the Pottery Barn sectionals last night on line and I was impressed that it said the seat depth was about 23". Overall depth was 35"...so that seems to me like the back pillows would have be pretty supportive to prevent us from feeling like we were falling backwards but at least it might be worth trying. I also want to go try the Clayton Marcus at our nearby stores but unfortunately DS is home sick and I think may be tomorrow as well so it may be Friday or this weekend before I can pick up where I left off. I'll be sure to post the results of our next foray out to test sofas! I really appreciate the suggestions--thanks.

The seat depth on the Theodore (Clayton Marcus) states that it is 22" deep. The back cushions are supportive on that particular style. Ours is coming next week and I will report back with regard to how it feels, along with some pics.

I also know of another manufacturer, Younger, made in NC. Most of their line is on the small side for apartments and smaller homes.
