Does anyone buy formica topped dinettes anymore?

I'm trying to replace a kitchen dinette set (maple with formica top); it's 40 years old & still in great shape. However, with a kitchen updating taking place, I'd like a new set. I love the Tom Seely; Canadel; Bermex etc.; but the tabletops are all wood...beautiful. Since I have a formal dining room, and would like to continue to use a kitchen table for folding laundry, board games, etc. I want something easy-care but with some style & wonder if anyone has come across any formica top brands that are fairly attractive. Over the weekend, I am going to look at a brand named Cochrane. Supposedly they carry a line with formica tops. Just wondering if I am making a mistake by taking this route. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

My MIL is still using the Cochrane kitchen table that we purchased in 1982.

THe tables by Bermex and canadel supposedly have a special coating that prevents damage by liquids and foods up to a certain time frame...maybe 24 hrs. I'm going to order from Bermex...I already ordered a "test" chair and am happy with the finish and workmanship.

However, I do plan on covering it with a glass top just in case! I dont trust my toddler with a fork!

Talley, good luck with the canister decision. I had an adorable inherited cookie jar that I loved, but we stopped eating cookies, and I was deeply conflicted about keeping it-couldn't think of anything else to store there (still had the canisters at that point). However, the lid fell off while I was cleaning it one day, and sadly broke in many pieces. So that was that, away it went-and I was spared a little guilt along the way since it was very precious to the person who gave it to me as well. And as an aside, my Martha Stewart P-Touch died this morning. Remember? : ) Purchased in 2003? We will try to repair it (we think there is a short in the wiring since it flashes the words P-Touch then completely stops working but after a lot of re-plugging in and fiddling with the adaptor cord, it might start again, maybe but increasingly not), but if not, will replace it. We used it just yesterday and it was hard to keep the power on but we made five nice labels for our car files. Fifteen years of flawless label making, such a godsend! Any recommendations? Thanks!

I think if you are dressing up you should wear either panty hose or thigh highs.I just think people look underdressed without nylons when they are supposed to be dressed up. A lot of the tv stars don't wear them,like Kelly Rippa and some of the other hostess's of shows don't wear them either,also some of the runway models. MY own personal opinion is that they make the outfit and the person look finished. Oh and i really hate to see women in dresses in the winter time with open toed shoes as well and no hose!!!JMO Kathi

Actually, that is precisely what I struggle with when it comes to stained cabinets. I like painted cabinets, but I also really like really simple inset wood cabinets like these: I might even like those more than painted cabinets. However, I am having trouble finding a kitchen floor that I like better than hardwood floors, and I really do not like it when the cabinets and floor are nearly the same color. I've yet to find an inspiration photo of a kitchen with both hardwood floors and stained wood cabinets that I like -- I always seem to want more contrast between the floor and the cabinets. For instance, I love this kitchen: You'll notice it doesn't have a hardwood floor. I love the look of that tile floor with the wood cabinets, but in practice, I cook barefoot, and tile is cold and unforgiving on the joints. Plus white tile always looks dirty and the grout is a pain to clean. I've given some thought to a marmoleum floor, which might be a way around it, but I've never spent any time in a kitchen with one and am not sure I'd like it. I haven't seen any with a pattern that would hide dirt/grime that didn't look a bit hospital-ish. Light is also a concern with stained cabinets. I have never had a kitchen with an abundance of windows, and light is SUPER important to me. I'd only deploy stained cabinets if I also had a wall of windows and almost no uppers, so natural light and airiness are basically a given no matter what cabinet finish I choose.

We renovated a kitchen in 2011 and got the trendy modern side handle. One from hansgrohe. I cursed it and hated it for all 2 years we lived in the house. It was counterintuitive, and always creating problems. We renovated in another house after that I did the Hansgrohe Talis S. Same modern line but top handle. Clt3, Apparently Cochrane has come out with a new line of formica-type topped tables; was told there were many calls for it. However, there was so little on the floor that I just can't order without seeing. I appreciate your response; obviously it has held up well for your MIL. I'm still thinking about it.

smile, I have looked at Bermex & Canadel & was told about the safety period of 24 hours for spills etc. Sounds pretty reasonable to me. Are you planning to purchase a stained or mixed color finish? Just curious. Also, great idea to order a "test chair". As I told Clt3, I was also impressed with the Cochrane brand, but since there was not much on the floor, I hesitate ordering w/o seeing. I have been able to see a good bit of the Bermex & Canadel & it looks great. Thanks for your input.

I purchased the windsor chair C-356W with the spindles gathered) from high point. Seat was wipe stained sand, legs and back were antique vienna. I dont like the rustic or "sanded" look (b/c I want it to be done naturally), but I also dont like the stark beige colors...and Bermex was the only manufacterer that offered an antique beige color that I liked.

The cost of 4 chairs + table + small buffet would be over 2k, so spending 150 on one chair seemed like a good idea. I already had plans to use it as a computer chair or in my childs bedroom if I didn't like it for a breakfast table.

A friend of mine put glass on an all white/beige breakfast area set and it looked great. I'm not sure how it will look on wood, but I'm going to try!

I have a kitchen table & chairs made by COCHRANE that I purchased in 1978. It has a formica top & has stood up well. I just had a new kitchen designed & installed & our daughters all asked "are you going to get a new kitchen set?". My answer was "why should we, as this one is fine." I have many lovely tablecloths that are very colorful which adds nicely to the decor of the room. The chairs, which have rungs, are all intact & still as comfortable as the day we bought them. Hope this helps.
