X post... wood look porcelain advice needed please

We went to the Porcelenosa showroom today to look for rectified through body porcelain tile for our living area. My DH really liked the wood look porcelain. It was really beautiful and expensive. $10-$14 a sq.ft. depending on length. I'm looking for alternative and recommended brands of this type of tile.

Again, rectified, through body color, wood look porcelain. Suggestions anyone? OH.. and definitely less expensive then $14 a sq.ft.

I like option 2 because it makes sense to fill the whole wall because of mirror issues, as you said, and I think a 56" vanity provides a nice amount of counter space. The shallow cabinet in front of the door will help the room feel less cramped, and I agree the wall mount vanity will help too. If she can live without solid surface, there's lots of formica out there that could look really good and modern without breaking the budget. I am in the process of a bathroom remodel, and also have the marble-look floors. I ended up finding a quartz remnant that is almost white, with just slight veining. It looks great with the floors. I had to look pretty hard to find a remnant, but it can be done. I'd say I probably saw an equal number of 2 and 3 cm remnants. But definitely finding granite remnants is easier, and black might be a good option.

So sorry I never updated this thread (such a bad habit to not conclude threads in case they pop up in future searches). I posted the tile info in another thread, but i should post it here too. The 'marble' tile is porcelain and is called Exedra Calacutta. 18 x 18 on the floor, 9 x 18 on the walls. The feature tile is Danse Lucido Vetromarmi collection water jet tile with glass and calcutta marble. The subways and shower floor 1 x 1s are Pavarotti Pearl. All tile is from Artistic Tile. BlackChamois the Gray Owl didn't work at all. All the ones I thought would be great just didn't look the same in the space. Enduring, we LOVE Smokey Taupe. It's our whole kitchen and library area paint. I just didn't like how it was pulling out the strong yellows in the tile. Maybe because the tile is porcelain and I felt it made it look more like porcelain and less like marble? In the end we stuck with Moonshine. It ended up settling in much less blue and much more green. I must have caught it in very specific light for it to look that blue. Paint is so tricky! The door is obviously very sun/weather exposed. If it is very exposed, it might not have much stain remaining. I think I would paint the door. My stained mahogany door is somewhat recessed and does not get all the heat/rain weather that some do that are not recessed. I had a wood door years ago that was orange when I bought the house which I later painted black. It has been years ago but the paint lasted forever. I have been thinking of painting my door and have been very interested in the fine paints of Europe. Albeit expensive, I think if it lasts for years, it makes up for the initial cost. Standard, cement-based grouts have been around for quite some time. By today's standards, they are losing favor by those of us that do this for a living. Having done this for longer than I'll admit to, I still find certain colours are difficult to remain true to what should be expected...even by a pro. Insufficient mixing before water is added. Many of these bags pf grout have the colororant unevenly dispersed. I've grouted an area in a light brown and I'll see a smear of red pigment...(looks like lipstick..) under my float! Mixing the batches unevenly as to consistancy. On a large job, only ONE person should be mixing the grout. Too much water during clean-up. Sponges should be VERY well wrung out. Spring water can have minerals within that can discoulour grout. Iron, etc.......Solution is to buy some distilled wate at the grocery. Cheap insurance.

YEA Bill! I'm so excited to read that your choosing this for your own home. Makes me feel VERY confident to look at this brand. I had seen some Porcelenosa that was beautiful but $14 a sq. ft. just for material. I just ordered three samples direct from Datile. I've been looking all over the internet and have found all sorts of brands... anywhere from around $3 - $12 a sq.ft. I wanted unglazed through body color. Could I install this tile with Spectralock and a 1/16th grout line? Would it be ridiculous for us to try and install it ourselves if we really took our time? A fellow forum member whose in the design business sent me some beautiful Italian samples but the colors weren't quite right. And the ones that the color almost worked were too shiny. I want a matte finish. Thanks for posting!

Bill... I got my samples and like the Hickory color best. It'll give a casual look and should hide a mulititude of sins. Can this tile be installed with 1/16th grout joints? I'd love to see a pic of yours installed. What color did you go with?

I haven't done it yet. It'll be the tile in my mud room come this summer, and I'll most likely go with the heath. Yes, it can be set with a tight joint (and should be), as well as grouted with Spectralock, if you wish. I just checked my price book, and retail on the Timber Glen should be somewhere around 8.00 a foot. Anymore than that and you're being taken for a ride.

Oh good... I found it online for around $6.80 a ft. so I guess that's good. How difficult is this on the installation scale? We have a concrete slab.

The slab needs to be dead flat, because the pieces are so long. That's pretty much the only caution that I can think of off hand.

Got it! If it's too much for us to handle... we'll contract it out but DH is very very handy and very very deliberate in his work. I think with both of us working it may be doable.
