Ikea Knodd - food safe?

Howdy-hi,

I've been looking for a storage container for rice (we buy in 20 lb. bags) and came across this "Knodd" (gotta love Ikea) lidded bucket which is the ideal size but want to confirm that the finish used is food safe.

The particular bucket I want is ivory in color, Ikea's website states: Bin/ Lid: Steel, Pigmented epoxy/polyester powder coating. Handle: Steel, Galvanized

The item was manufactured in Poland.

Any ideas how can I determine if it's okay to use for this purpose?

If you have doubts, put a large plastic bag inside before dumping the rice in.

Storage is a problem, especially when the house is small. Our house is single wall construction (vertical one inch thick boards where the outside of the board is the outside of the house and the inside of the board is the interior of the house - it works best in warm climates), however, when we remodeled the bath house (a separate building since the house didn't originally have plumbing) we put in "double wall" (2" x 4" stud) construction. I have found that canning jars fit real nice on shelves set between the studs. Loads of storage space is hiding in the walls. If you have any, tear out some of that drywall, put shelves in the wall and then new drywall panels hinged to hide with push latches or cabinet doors set into the wall. Presto! Instant invisible storage. I'm also planning on building a cabinet to fit the bigger pickle jars used for dry storage since those jars are too big to fit anywhere else. Since our house is old, the traditional "pie safe" style of cabinet is easy to build and fits right in. We also have earthquakes, so having the jars hide behind cabinet doors improves their survival rate. My friend strung wires across her shelves and her canned goods survived the last 6.7 earthquake. The wires aren't very visible and about two or three inches from the shelf. She said if the wires hadn't been there, she didn't think there would have been anything left on the shelves at all.

jalsy6 - I JUST (10 minutes) ago was able to successfully embed pictures into my post!!! I put up my layout hoping for some advice. I wasn't able to do it successfully when I had my pictures in Shutterfly, but when I made a PhotoBucket account, it worked like a dream. If you put your pix in PhotoBucket, there is a little pull-down at the bottom of each individual shot. If you click on the HTML code box, you can copy that info, then when you paste it into your post, the picture is there - it's like magic!!! Very simple.... GIve it a try. (I don't mind typing this "off topic" stuff here because I'm the person who started the thread...and I'm so excited that I learned to embed pictures I want to share the knowledge!!!!) Thanks for the tip on the House Beautiful article. We used Waterlox in a satin finish, too, and were fortunate enough to find it at a local paint store. Our Ikea counter (the light, warmer-toned one) came out really, genuinely lovely. We only did 2 coats, though, because the satin gets its look by particulate suspension and the more coats, the more hazy. Although I don't cut on it, of course, it gets really heavy use and frequent scrubbing with a scrubbing sponge, so 3 years later it's probably due for another coat, although still sealed and looking great. No cracks every. There is discoloration where moisture seeped in around the base of the faucet because we didn't keep that challenging seam adequately sealed over time. We will redo with Waterlox because it's excellent. I'm not hurrying, though. We weren't living in the house when it went on, so the fumes weren't a problem then (I wore an industrial-grade respirator mask), but even though a fresh coat would go on extremely quickly, we'd have to move out for at least 2-3 days. Fumes don't linger on after the initial application period, tho. Fierce and then nonexistent.

We had to cut our IKEA block down to 49 x 25 (it's actually 49 5/8" x 25 5/8") and it was a pain (delayed us for weeks b/c we don't have a table saw and had to wait for our cabinetmaker to have time to stop by and do it for us, and it also took some precision on his part to cut such a small amount off!) Getting one the right dimensions is well worth it, I think. We looked at the Boos and I liked their wood a lot...our issue was needing 49" so we would have had to get the 60" one and cut it down, which was dumb/expensive. If your sizing is perfect, go for it! I'll also say on the birch---we have a freestanding IKEA butcher block in birch leftover from our pre-remodel kitchen, and I'm fairly certain the birch IKEA uses is a European birch that's much higher on the Janka scale than American birch is (about equivalent to hard maple, if I remember from when we were researching it). It's held up fine to cutting directly on it. BUT it is a very cool yellowish birch as a result---not something I would mix with cherry floors. We chose the beech instead for our new kitchen, where we had douglas fir and natural cherry in the mix. It leans to the warm rosy pinkish side once it's finished and blends much better with those woods, IMO---but I'm pretty sure it's not in stock right now. Maple seems like a much better bet if you're going for warm.

It's likely safe....but I think I wouldn't keep rice in it.
I buy the 11 pound bags of rice and keep it in the plastic bag inside the burlap bag, in the back hall storage.
Then I keep a smaller amount in my kitchen cupboard in a Tupper container with a long handled 1/2 cup measure in the container to scoop out what I need.
But how about glass? Like below?
I really REALLY love covered glass jars for food storage...my counter is lined with them...tea bags, dog food, pasta, candy, coffee pods, salt, turbinado sugar etc.

I can tell you from personal experience that this will rust over the year. I would not consider this food safe.

You may want to check with restaurant supply stores if you are storing that much rice. How long does 20# last you? If it is more than 3 months, you may want to check into vacuum packing it.

Got an email back from Ikea today. They do not consider Knodd to be food safe. It's so cute, though! Oh well.... For the time being I just placed the entire bag inside it, bag and all.

I'm going to check out vacuum packaging. Really, we don't need this much rice, but dh's favorite (Kokohu Rose) is only available here in huge bags - which lasts us about 3 months. I'm going to check out vacuum packaging. It would be better to break the quantity down into smaller, more manageable amounts for storage.

Thanks SO much for your ideas - you guys are great! I don't post often but do love to read this forum.
