Petra, thanks for being the guinea pig and for reporting back.

I was going to make this project at the next sleep over. This weekend I made smoothies (4 year old DGS wanted like Smoothie King-yea, like that's better); he frowned and reported that it wasn't like Smoothie King. He is very critical.

I find so much of the "new" stuff is sort of like that....
Ntoa big fan of 5 minute bread....I kind of like standard issue bread better.
And I have never tasted home made wine that was really drinkable. We used to have a friend who would peiodically bring a jug of his home made Welches grape juice wine when he came to dinner. The only way to avoid serving it was to serve fish or chicken!

LOL, I thought it tasted more like beer than it did like ginger ale when I made it, but lpinkmountain and I drank it and she took some home.

The kids wouldn't like it, I don't think, but I didn't think mine was THAT bad, especially if you like beer!

Sometimes it's just better to buy certain things at the store.

Annie, it did not resemble beer, it was just downright, completely nasty. The smell reminded me of home perming solution, just gross. My husband took one taste and said "Yuck, dump it out!". This stuff was so noxious, the side of the sink I dumped it into stank until I rinsed for a minute, blech. I don't know what happened, I sterilized the 2 liter bottle and used filtered water and did everything according to the recipe. But I do know I am NOT gonna try this again. :o)

Was the recipe something like this? Did it have yeast in it? I've made ginger ale using a ginger syrup and carbonated water, and it was okay.

Oh my, that's not like mine at all. Mine was very yeasty, kind of sweet and really reminded me of beer, but sweeter.

Lars, Alton Brown's recipe is very similar to the one you linked to, except it uses 1/8th tsp yeast. Here it is:

Alton Brown's Ginger Ale

Ingredients

* 1 1/2 ounces finely grated fresh ginger
* 6 ounces sugar
* 7 1/2 cups filtered water
* 1/8 teaspoon active dry yeast
* 2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice

Directions

Place the ginger, sugar, and 1/2 cup of the water into a 2-quart saucepan and set over medium-high heat. Stir until the sugar has dissolved. Remove from the heat, cover and allow to steep for 1 hour.

Pour the syrup through a fine mesh strainer set over a bowl, pressing down to get all of the juice out of the mixture. Chill quickly by placing over and ice bath and stirring or set in the refrigerator, uncovered, until at least room temperature, 68 to 72 degrees F.

Using a funnel, pour the syrup into a clean 2-liter plastic bottle and add the yeast, lemon juice and remaining 7 cups of water. Place the cap on the bottle, gently shake to combine and leave the bottle at room temperature for 48 hours. Open and check for desired amount of carbonation. It is important that once you achieve your desired amount of carbonation that you refrigerate the ginger ale. Store in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks, opening the bottle at least once a day to let out excess carbonation.

Ha, I just read the reviews on the Food Network website, and the most recent reviewer seems to have had the same experience I did, except her Ginger Ale at least had lots of fizz.

I think I'll make the syrup and mix it with seltzer, that would be tasty.

All I need is to see "Alton Brown", and I know it is nasty. Sorry, can't stand him or his so called recipes.

The only ginger ale I consistently like is Vernors.
Every once in awhile I'll buy a ginger beer sodapop but even those vary so much in brands.

I agree with Annie. You know, I usually like Alton Brown...but this particular recipe has me thinking that it is Yuck!

For such a smart guy, I have not liked anything I have made of his including his meatloaf or his onion dip. He just seems to do strange things to food and makes everything harder than it has to be.

This is the second Alton Brown recipe I've made, the first one was his chocolate pudding, which was very good.
