Lowest Mantel Height,How to get?

Greetings,

We want will replace our open hearth wood fireplace with an enclosed wood fireplace. The minimum mantel height for most fireplaces comes out at about 48 inches. We want 40 inches or lower.

What fp have the lowest requirements for mantel height?

Does a URL exist with fp sizes that include the clearance requirements?

Clearances to combustibles for masonry fireplaces are found in the building code. Clearances for manufactured metal inserts or free standing stoves will be found in the manufacturer's installation instructions.

The clearances you mention are much larger than required for traditional masonry fireplaces.

I thought it was the other way around. Rather than the clearances being much larger for the inserts, I thought the clearance requirements were much larger for the old style masonry fireplaces.

We are also remodeling and want a low height. There are numerous inserts (in our case, we are installing a gas insert but still a metal insert) that are in the range of 24 or 25 inches high. If we place these at floor level which is what we plan to do since the floor of the existing firebox is same level as the floor of the room, then I'm hoping that we can add at most 8 inches of tile above the insert which puts the top of the fireplace at 33 inches.
We are not going to use a mantle but instead use a fireplace canopy or fireplace hood (3 to 6 inch type of strip of metal) which I hope we can install at the seam of the insert where it meets the tile surround.
This means the TV we plan to install over this fireplace will have its bottom length possibly as low as 33 inches above the floor.
We have a fireplace guy coming on Wednesday (5 days from now) and should know more then.
I do know that if we were going to leave the fireplace as it was as a wood burning fireplace (without an insert), we would need at least 12 inches of tile above the firebox top edge before installing a mantle (or in our case now, a TV).

I think that I would remove the silver vase and put the glass vase in the center. You could take a small glass bowl and turn it upside down under the vase to raise it up a bit. I would probably take the smaller branches out and gather some larger ones from the yard to add a little balance to the vase. Knowing me.. I would probably paint the branches red for a little "pop" of color against the dark brick and mantel and then hang the crystals on them. I would also take a pretty scarf and "swag" it over the top of the mirror. This would eliminate part of the view of the ceiling fan and the larger branches would take care of the rest. You could probably even use just a sheer curtain if you have one and let the ends drape down onto the mantel.Another thought.. if you have a roll of pretty wallpaper border,you could just cut it to fit inside the mirror and tape it in place to transform the mirror completely. Something with cardinals or other winter birds would be lovely behind the branches. Then I would take the other candlesticks and angels and group them at either end of the mantel.The little snowman on the end .. as cute as he is... would have to be put away until next Christmas. This is just my personal thoughts.. I'm not a designer/decorator and it's late,I'm tired and I'm rambling..lol. Susan

The fireplace has enough detail in the moulding on either side, and too little depth on the mantel itself, to warrant adding anything. I think it will only make the mantel area look more crowded and emphasize the lack of depth. I would add topiary or floor vases filled with tall greenery, branches, etc on either side of the mantel by the wall for softness. The other thing I would consider is antiquing the moulding a bit to warm it up and balance the darkness of the tv and marble. The antiquing will bring out all the lovely fluting and details on the moulding, which will negate the need for more visual accents.

@Beth H et al.. yes, and I'm really thrilled with all of the recommendations, everyone has style and it's great to see varying opinions. So I don't want to think anyone has wasted their time, I think down the road in the near future, we will go with something built out pretty much like you were suggesting early on. As we just finished the remodel within the last year, we are not up for building anything out or even tiling the wall at this point. We don't need new furniture at the moment (kids will ruin it anyway). For now, we were looking for something minor / superficial, if that's the correct verbiage. While we know now, that it may not look "perfect", it's where we're at now. That said, we don't want to do anything (now) with the fireplace, what we are open to is: some type of shelving (which would have to be shallow in depth, I think), definitely plants (faux preferably), artwork or like I mentioned (which may have gotten lost), is maybe B&W canvas print collage (I'm a part-time photographer and we have zero photos of our kids displayed). We are also open to putting a small corner piece to the left side, but it would have to be very small footprint as we only have about 12" from the wall to the lightswitch near the slider, but after hearing/seeing some of the plant options, I think we prefer that. Another note, we (I) have a floor subwoofer to the right hand side, you can see my wife's aerogarden sitting on top of it until we find a home for it :) Hopefully, that helps, again, I really do appreciate everyone weighing in and taking a lot of time for the mock ups. -Matt

LOL @Flo Mangan yes for sure it’s scary in that picture!! IRL I’d not just leave it on in the dark by itself like that - just to show how tall the effect is (more gravitas to balance that built in)..... when the console lamps are on, the effect is quieter and didn’t photograph. Agree, about not filling every space. It starts to feel busy. I like it calm but don’t want it to look sparse. It is a good start and not sure when or how I will do more. You know how hard it is when you move and have a million things to do and get. I don’t think they are wrong about the console not being long enough, but just tossing it out and buying something new isn’t how I roll. It’s different and I like it. If you see the right pillows (or lamps for that matter), I’d love your input. If you see my inspiration photo in the original post, it’s a light room, and I don’t want to kill that mojo. Wish I had a decent camera to show that the room isn’t dark at all.
