My understanding is that 2 things generally speed up the outgassing from materials: increased heat and increased humidity. The humidity is too hard to control and brings other problems with it, such as mold growth. So, that leaves increased heat. Sunlight combined with heat has always worked best for me, so I drag everything into the sun or near big windows with sun coming in. Increase your ventilation at the same time or you just add to the pollutant load in your house. Odor comes from the volatile organic compounds in the foam, which are likely a health hazard, so bear that in mind. It's much more than just an unpleasant smell.

There's a lot more to know about memoryfoam, and foam mattresses in general, than is hinted at in this post. I suggest that you check the forum at the link and read some of the back posts and reviews for a wealth of information. I have a memoryfoam mattress. Regarding the heat issue, yes it exists for some people. I sleep hot on my mattress sometimes. It's an issue with body temperature, but the mattress definitely contributes. In my case, the problem is not constant, and I like the feel of the mattress and the sleep that I get on it. I'm still working with padding material to help the heat issue, and haven't found a definitive solution yet. Foam mattresses can be used on many types of foundations including plywood and platform beds with slats. Again, there is discussion of this on the linked forum. If considering a foam mattress of any type, I would stongly recommend one of the reputable internet companies, rather than buying the outrageously-priced T brand. The topper is just a temporary fix. You will usually start to feel the discomfort again when in a couple of years. Usually people buy too hard of a mattress and they don't get the support that you need. When you lay on a mattress it should conform to you back or side. Lay on the mattress the same way that you sleep. Never go shopping for a mattress by price. Find the comfort that you like and then talk price with the salesperson. In general, I tell my customers to plan on spending at least $1200.00 for a new mattress. Again, don't use this as a guide to shop with, but more as an eye opener to be ready for the price. Most people would be happier on Platinum Dreams, Restonic, or Simmons. These are my favorite brands in order. Well, I'd be more worried about finding a replacement I love than getting rid of one I didn't, lol. I did buy a really nice mail order pure natural organic latex mattress that is really comfy. Firm on one side and a bit softer on the other, but neither is really soft like a memory foam or gel one is. Let me see if I can figure out the brand and will let you know. The first one they sent was an undersized queen and they promptly replaced it. The second one is better but they are not generous in their measurements. It's in a guest room and everyone seems to like it. I'll come back and post the name when I find it. eta: that was easy, it is Zenhaven. They have the Zenhaven and the Saatva hybrid; I got the Zenhaven. It is flippable, so should last almost a lifetime. The last pure latex mattress I had lasted 40 years, lol. Zenhaven
