Advice Welcomed for Glass Top Dining Table

I've done some searching here and on the internet and haven't a clue as to good quality brands/manufacturers who make glass top dining tables. There seems to be so much garbage on the net in the $300-$700 range that I would be afraid the table is made with inferior materials.

My criteria is a rectangular top, around 44 x 72+ inches, preferably metal/steel or wrought iron base, and decent/good quality. Budget for table only is $1,200 to $1,500. Less $$ is always a plus. Chairs will be purchased separately.

I'm looking into a glass dining table myself. I've found the cheapest glass tops here. Combined with one or more stone table bases I think it'd be a good looking table. I also ran across "Starphire" glass, which is a low-lead glass made by PPG. Here's a thread about fish tank owners comparing standard glass to Starphire.

Try Ashley furniture- a manufacturer not a store. Many stores carry this brand. Got my 42 inch tempered for 99.00!

I think if you want clean, glass is the way to go. The pawprints, fingerprints, splatters, who knows what are still there on the wood. Unless you have a poly surface, you can't wash them off. Same with tile grout. People get colors to hide the dirt. I would rather know the dirt is there to clean it off. Seeing everyone's legs under the table is funny! I guess I have never eaten a meal at a glass table to remember that. Tablecloths are a good solution for meal time to get around that one. I prefer wood but don't feel it is a clean surface as others do. That bothers me but I doubt I will ever have a glass table because they feel modern to me. You can repair damaged wood on a good table but the glass gets scratched forever. I don't think it is cheap to replace!

I have a 60" round table in my kitchen, with a trestle-style base. It easily seats 6, and can seat 8 when necessary.

Thank you JudyG and Kirsten! So that's two votes for the white with nickel. I'm starting to feel a little better for sure. Yes, we're definitely wanting a large rug under the table. Any suggestions for color? Darks, neutrals, bold? We'll probably do a china cabinet as well, but not a piece that matches too closely with the table.

I would recommend searching on Craigslist or going to your local flea market, estate sales, etc., before heading to a store. You can usually find really good quality furniture for much cheaper than retail. They might not have what you're looking for, but it's a great place to start before shelling out a bunch of money for a new one. Good luck with your search!
