Hardwood Floor Dog Scratches - Redo?

Hi there.

We have either cherry floors, or cherry stained maple flooring. Either way, my 70 lb. doggie can scratch them. I've heard that the reason flooring is lacking durability is because of all the government intervention on the chemicals companies can use to protect the flooring. I want my floors to look like new again.

Questions are:

1) If I get them sanded down, restained, and refinished, is there a product/finish out there than can stand up to my big doggy peeling out on the floor?

2) Is this wood just too soft for practical purposes? (we drop things, in addition to the dog doing his damage)

3) Is there another wood that would stand up better to a full house?

Cherry is gorgeous but not super hard, as floors go. Maple is much harder, but any floor will dent if you drop things on it. I have white oak floors that have been dented by women's cheap stilettos (not mine!) and dropped cans. I'm sure someone will chime in with info on finishes, but I can tell you that the very best prevention for dog scratches is short nails.

nothing in an on site refinish can stop dog nails. Its just part of having hardwood. keep the nails trimmed back is the best advice. There is no on site technology that I am aware of to place the aluminum oxide on the top layer without fogging the finish. There are pre finished that does, but there are some sacrifices o prefinished as well. Good Luck.

The last time I had an issue (someone walked on the varnish while it was drying), I went to the guy who did the flooring and he had to redo a whole section of floor. I was wondering if some spot repair was possible short of that.

When it comes to hardwood, trends are something to ignore! Why? Because hardwood is pretty much a lifetime purchase, and unless yours is damaged in some way, you're probably not going to replace it. So, light wood vs. dark wood, wide planks vs. narrow planks -- that stuff's all going to come and go. With that in mind -- as well as the very real concerns about cleaning dark wood -- I'll vote for a nice, neutral midtone every time. Not too much contrast, not too red, and (unless it's a beach house) not too pale. I think this is the wood that's most likely to give you good service and stand the test of time.

We had the same problem with a dark stain over white oak. Contracter used Bona stain, and 3 coats of water based satin finish. Each dried at least 12 hours between coats. Our floors were very hard previously in the “golden oak” (natural) color but had yellowed and we didnt like the color. Now they scratch SO easily, as in drop a spoon and it scratches and dents the floor. We don’t wear shoes in the house either. Does not seem right. All the scratches 1 month later seem random, not from furniture, which is all on felt pads. What went wrong here?? I feel like I’m walking on eggshells.

NOOOOOOO! No steam! Never ever use steam with wood. The steam 'cooks' the polyurethane causing it to haze and crack. If you REALLY want to make these look better, bring in a hardwood flooring professional to attempt a 'buff and coat'. This is the ONLY option for these types of dents/scratches. And remember: factory finished hardwoods are NOTORIOUSLY difficult to get a buff and coat to 'stick'. It could make the problem worse (as in ruin the floors). If you are so desperate to make these issues 'look' better, then please do it properly = buff and coat. Which may not work. For $3/sf.

Don't think stilettos have to be cheap to dent a floor. My Manolos have done so and they were definitely not cheap!

Trim the dog's nails.
Every other week or so.

After cutting them you need to file the sharp edges the cutter leaves to round them slightly.

If you hear them clicking on the floor they are long.

Cherry would rate as very soft for flooring applications.

If you write on a single piece of paper on a cherry table using a ball point pen you may be able to read the writing in the damage to the table surface.
