Cost for professional to install hardwood floor

I am planning on getting hardwood floors installed in spring/summer and just wondering if anyone has a ball park idea of price per sq ft. It's for our living room, which runs into dining room that already has hardwood. It will need to be stained to match the floor in our dining room. When the dining room was installed years ago it was described as select 1 oak, which they said was the best quality. Wondering if that is the same as red oak?

I plan to get estimates soon, but just hoping to get a ball park before they come out. I live in the upstate NY, near Syracuse.

labor for wood or laminate is about the same. The variable is floor prep. If the wood and laminate are floating there is minimal floor prep. if you glue down the wood floor prep will be a factor. Vinyl planks if glued down will require floor prep. If floating then it would be less assuming you have a solid surface to install over.

Actually 5% overage is standard. Unless your going to be doing a angle, or very custom installation. As an installer, subcontracting, I charge the guy I'm subcontracting to for the amount of flooring he loads onto my truck. As a contractor selling my services directly to the property owner, I bill for exact flooring used, including any cull boards I touched to give you a lasting work of art.

I've gotten 3 quotes and they vary from $4.45 to $5.80 per square foot for installation only (not including the wood). The highest quote did not include prepping the subfloor, which we estimated at an additional $500. I'm installing 800 square feet of prefinished 5" red oak planks, solid 3/4" hardwood, over slightly uneven old douglas fir subfloor in a 100 year old home. I have had great luck with finding vendors on Angie's list, and decent luck with Yelp.

What type and size hardwood? Solid or engineered? Prefinished or site finished? Where are you located (labor is very region dependent)? What amount of square footage? What floor of the house? What of of subfloor and what sort of prep will be required? New construction or existing house?

Totally depends on where you are and who you hire. $4.50 / ft. is really low here. What are their qualifications and do they have solid references?

CT, the lowest around here is $2.50-$3 a foot to install and $4-$5 a foot for sand, stain, polyX3.

the 4.50 is for installing and staining, and finishing. This is wholesale number by a man who is the best. We charge about 7.50 a ft for his work plus the cost of the material needed. I was very misleading..Sorry.
