So confused about flooring, please help

So i need a floor for living room, dining room and kitchen that looks good (like oak wood), doesnt scratch (like tile) and is not hard on joints(unlike tile) and i dont like carpet (too dirty)...is anything like that exists? Vinyl just seems cheap, cork - dont like the look...so....can someone help me choose the floor? and of course we are on the budget...

Sounds like what you want is wood.

We have installed our own, it is fairly easy and you can rent the tools to make it simple. I even finished ours and it turned out great.

If money is the issue, many places have lower grades. For our Sunroom/gameroom and backdoor entry room we used a lower grade of oak flooring because I wanted it to appear a little older, I wanted character and I liked how it looked, not so perfectly matchy matchy with color and grain.

I surprisingly got many wonderful grain variations, some birds eye, some burled- just really beautiful. I think we paid 99 cents a sq ft. We bought extra because we knew we would have some that were not satisfactory but the flooring cost very little, mainly it was just time and labor.

Other idea would be some of the engineered or laminate wood. Sometimes you will see them in the clearance section of the big box stores and they will be marked down quite a bit.

ccoombs . . . thanks for your input !! Probably when it all comes down to it, we will end up going with sheet vinyl/fiberfloor . . are they the same thing ?? I should know by now, I guess . . . but still in the land of confusion !! Who woulda thunk that a simple floor for the sunroom would cause so much angst ??!!!!! Not me !!! cynnamama . . . thanks for your input, also !! Had at one point considered cork . . . but I believe it has to be glued down, and because of water problems we had at one time, it's been advised to use something other than glue-down. I do love cork, however . . . I'm with you on the not knowing how to post pictures !! Something I need to learn !!!! The entire time of the kitchen remodel . . . I could never post pics to visualize what I was talking about !! MANY people tried step by step to explain it to me . . . Again . . . thank you both for your input !! Appreciate it !! C.

hbk, I've seen this product once before but regarding them as a manufacturer I have no experience with them nor have I heard of anyone using them. I think the only difference between the engineered and the structured is the thickness of the wear layer (top species later). One is 3mm and one is 4.5mm. Your first thought right off the bat would be the thicker wear layer would be better but be cautious there. Over the years I've seen some real problems with thicker wear layers on engineered floors regarding cupping, splitting etc. I've been in the industry a long time and I've dealt with many vendors. Over the last year I've sent a bunch of customers to fastfloors.com and they've all been real happy. I'm pretty certain they have a bunch of tigerwood floors if that's the species you're looking for. When I shopped for a washer last summer I did a lot of research and checked epinions and a lot of other hearsay sights. (This included). From what I read it seemed that the owners of the Frigidaire front loaders were all very happy. Occasionally, as with any brand, there were a few complaints but the overall trend was very positive. I have never been one that believed a word printed in Consumer Reports. I know a lot of people treat it like a bible but that's not me. I've always found their reliability reports on autos (for example) to be all lies. Given all that I personally like the 2940 or the version sold at Lowe's with the blue door. We went with Bosch mostly because my wife wanted a really big opening ot stuff the clothes into. But for reliability I think owners will report good things about the Frigidaires. For sure I'd buy Frigidaire long before LG (Lucky Goldstar) or the GE washers made in China.

Soda blasting from a professional will be gentle abrasion that will work. But you may have issues with moisture migration, efflorescence, and lack of insulation in an old brick floor on grade. I sugges talking with an experienced local contractor.

Consider rubber and linoleum flooring. Both are durable, easy to clean and gentle on the joints. The rubber flooring I used on a kitchen reno--red coins contrasting with the ultra-white cabinets looked great, if I say so myself.
