This is a little venting about PNC here.

I get a little dividend from my great-grandfathers estate. Little being about $500 a year. Each year I have to wait for the k-1 from PNC to do my taxes. Each year it seems to get later and later. So today I called PNC Wealth Management since I still haven't received it and was told:

Well - 85% of them will be sent out March 15th, the others will be sent out April 15th.

Gee - I KNOW they aren't required to have them out by Jan 31st like the w-2's and 1099's but heck - when am I supposed to file my taxes if I don't get it in time?????

(And I DON'T want to file my return then have to file and amended).

Oh that would drive me crazy. Especially if I was expecting a refund!

You know the amount of the dividend that you've already received, don't you? Why not just include that amount and then file. If the IRS questions, you'll have received the K-1 by the time of their questions. That's what I'd do.

Good advice from will2kz. A point of clarification: the 1 CFM per 100 btu-hrs is mostly a rule of thumb and not a code requirement. There are other such rules of thumb. One is 100 CFM per linear foot of cooktop. (This is often suggested for lower powered gas units and electric stoves and cooktops.) These rules are designed to help folks size the hood, but they are not the only considerations. As kaseki has often pointed out here, CFM is only a part of the story. Focusing on just CFM misses important aspects of hood design. You need to look at other things such as the capture area and whether you have a flat ventilator type hood or one with an actual canopy. Wider and deeper is better than shallow and flat. (Another rule of thumb is to have a hood that is 6 inches wider than your cooktop (3" on either side) in order to do a better job at capturing the vaopor & etc. coming from the pots close to the side. A canopy is (usually) noticeably more effective in capturing and corraling steam and smoke than a flat bottomed hood. So a taller canopy style hood may be preferrable to a shallower, flat bottomed one if you've got the space for it. Sometimes you don't. Of course, how much power/capacity you use at any given time will depend on what and how much and how you are cooking. One advantage to higher powered hoods is that the greater capacity may allow you to run them at lower settings which will be quiter. But, again, this is personal preference (and budget), not a code requirement. But, going to a larger hood may put you under code requirements because of make-up-air (MUA) provisions. Some localities have adopted MUA standards, but many have not. The best way to find out what is "required" is to do precisely what will2kz suggested and call the inspectors. If you want to search on make-up-air, the commonly used abbreviation "MUA" is good to include in a search string.

It was free on Ravelry ao I hope it's OK to post it. Is it the 3rd yarn back that I pass over? Christmas Lace Size: 76 inches long, 5 inches wide. Materials: size 6 knitting needles 2 skeins Inca Alpaca 109 yards/50 grams each tapestry needle for weaving in ends Gauge: gauge is not critical as you will block to desired size Cast on 22 stitches. Row 1: k3, *YO, sl1, k1, psso, k2; repeat from * to last 3 stitches, YO, sl1, k1, psso, k1 Row 2: p3, *YO, p2tog, p2; repeat from * to last 3 stitches, YO, p2tog, p1 Repeat these two rows until desired length ending with a row 2. Knit 1 row. Bind off and weave in ends. Soak in tepid water for 30 minutes. Lace blocking wires threaded through the outermost row of yarnovers on either side give a lovely even scarf. Some comments on the instructions for row 3 of the pattern... Right above the row 1 instructions it says (multiple of 4 + 2 sts). This means that there are two stitches used for the selvage (edge), and the pattern itself is worked over 4 stitches. So, if you want the finished item to be wider, you cast on more multiples of 4 than you would if you want a smaller finished item. This is cool, because if you're using a different yarn (either heavier or lighter than the pattern calls for) or if your gauge is tighter or looser than the pattern recommends, you can easily adjust the size of the item with the number of multiples you cast on. Okay.... The pattern says k2 *sl 1, k3, repeat from * to end. You say you have 42 stitches on the needle. This tells me you have the initial 2 selvage stitches followed by 10 multiples of 4 stitches. You are supposed to slip 1 stitch in each of those multiples (*slip 1, knit 3, repeat from * to end). So you should have 10 slipped stitches, not 7. The other thing I want to mention is that some patterns want that slipped stitches to be "slipped as if to knit" and other patterns want the slipped stitches to be "slipped as if to purl." Whether a stitch is slipped knitwise or purlwise will determine the slant/twist of the stitch and it can make a difference in how the finished pattern looks. From the "Techniques" and "Abbreviations" that I can see at the bottom of the page, there isn't any guidance on whether slipped stitches should be slipped knitwise or purlwise. It's possible that the information is in that large pinkish area at the right-hand side of the right page. Or, it could be in general directions at the beginning or end of the book. Some "knitting authorities" say that unless the instructions state otherwise, the rule of thumb is to slip as if to purl. Someday you may even knit from a pattern that says sl1 wyif. This means slip 1 with yarn in front. You bring the yarn forward as if you're going to purl the next stitch, but you slip it. The next stitch could be a knit stitch or it could be a purl stitch. Either way, having that yarn in front will create a "bar" across the bottom of the next stitch, which is part of the pattern. It's a pretty effect. To make 1 stitch, hold the left-hand needle in your left hand and the right-hand needle in your right hand. Now look between the two needles. You will see a straight-line thread. Use the tip of one of the needles; whichever is more comfortable for you; place that straight yarn onto the left-hand needle. Now, knit that thread. You have literally made one stitch from within your knit fabric. To increase a stitch, you knit into the front and back of the next stitch on your left-hand needle. The results are the same. You are adding stitches to your work. The technique is different. The reason for the difference; the increase stitch makes a purl-like bump on the knit side of your fabric. If you make 1, there is no bump. Just a matter of taste.

It's not that easy - a k-1 is different. The whole amount received is not what they send me as being taxable depending on how well (or poorly) the trust did throughout the year. So I never know what to put in the box.
Years ago it was actually a loss.
So I just wait (and grumble)

You need to apply for an automatic extension of time to file your tax return. An extension will give you six more months to file your 1040.

Yes, and I specifically said she should file for an extension of time, which, of course, is completely different from filing an amended return.

If the OP doesn't get her K-1 until after April 15, she really has no choice but to file for an extension or file an amended return. It's not a question of whether she wants to do either one because she must do something. Failing to file her return (without first getting an extension) until after she gets the K-1 would subject her to a penalty for late filing.

Filing for an extension is much easier than amending and is what most people in her situtation actually do.

Question - can you get a penalty if you file late if you are getting a refund? I know I'm getting a refund - so if I wait it just wait it out and file it as soon as it comes in.

No penalty if you're due a refund. If you're sure you are (and it could be hard to tell without the K-1 but I assume you know your refund is more than enough to cover whatever might happen) then your best bet is to file when you actually get the K-1, whether it's before or after April 15. That's easier than filing and amending, but it will delay your refund.

I don't blame your for being upset with PNC. I've never understood why the IRS has that April 15 due date for the various types of K-1's. I used to administer a small family trust and I always sent out the K-1's well in advance of the due date.

Thanks FF - I'll just wait. I would actually love to pull the money from them & put it somewhere else because they are charging exhorbitant fees and we have no control over it. But I can't becuase there are 3 others involved and this trust is so strictly written that PNC has free reign to do what they want for another 20+ years.

My K-1 was late as well. I contacted my accountant a week or so ago to ask him about it. He said I could retrieve it online myself (or give him the password and he would do it for me). Didn't have to do either. It finally arrived in the mail on the 28th.

Anything can be transfered. Talk to the other 3 people and a good lawyer. Are the fees controled by state or federal laws? Just curious. We got stuck in something like that years ago and did get it changed. Good luck

Even if you file for an extension, you are obligated to pay what you do/may owe by April 15 in order to avoid penalty. If you are SURE that you will get a refund, that is not an issue--just an FYI for anyone else.
