Some advice on picking type of gas fireplace please!

We are adding a great room on and will be adding a gas fireplace. Our requirements are....

1) We do not want the cost of full masonry but we do want the most realistic looking fireplace and flame.

2) We do not want much heat (due to seating setup).

3) The look is important, we don't want it just looking like a box shoved into the wall.

4) We don't like the obvious glass look of some (but can deal with softening the glass with doors). So our questions are....

Do we go direct vent or fully vented? What are the negatives of each.

Who are the quality manufacturers and are there any specific models that fit our needs. Thanks

We have had a vent free DESA gas long set for ten years, and have been happy with it from the first day. We are in the midwest, and use it in a large family room for comfort heat. It went into a iron fire box, faced with brick, which we previously used with wood for many years. We bought it from a top rate company in our area, and they installed for us. There has probably been some updates in the last ten years, and maybe outside venting would be good. We have never had any problem with fumes, and keep the flue open a tiny crack. We feel like this is very efficient and puts out considerable heat. We usually keep in on the low level. Our two cats are in front of the fireplace constantly. It saved us a couple years ago, when the ice storms had our power off for several days in the winter. The flames look nice and we have been completely happy with this decision. I suggest, don't cut corners, you'll be happy to get a nice one.

State of the art technology is direct vent. It is very safe and energy efficient. It does not affect indoor air quality because the system is sealed, so it does not use indoor air to feed the combustion and it exhausts only to the outdoors. It is capable of producing serious heat.

The appearance of the flame is a matter of opinion. We are happy with ours, but if you're really wedded to big dancing flames, you might be disappointed.

The only way to decide what is right for you is to go to a dealer who has about a dozen systems on display, so you can see what they look like.

The other thing to consider is that the competence and honesty of the installer is of the utmost importance. These are complicated installations that require care and attention to detail. the challenge is finding someone who is really trustworthy. You need to ask around and get recommendations from people who have dealt with the installer you are considering.

LindaC, Some of my dishes I have never used before, and most have rarely been used. One set belonged to my Grandmother and were going to be thrown away before I decided I would take them. She had many sets of dishes and everyone had already claimed their favorites before me. I got the ones with magnolias (Mississipi state flower) on them. They are pretty in a very old-fashioned sort of way. My style is very contemporary, so I never use them but I remember eating on them at my Grandmother's when I was growing up. Another set of dishes my Godfather got for me at a pawn shop. They must have been custom made for someone, but they were perfect for my family. My DH and I are both pharmacists, and my DH also has another career. This set is ivory with a gold band, and gold symbols of both of these professions are in the center of the dishes. These dishes are very unique and great for professional parties. Before I got married I had already started a "hope chest" of Lenox China, but it was not sold at the stores in the home town of my DH, so I picked out another set so that people from his side would have something to buy for us. I have the set of Lenox dishes (which happen to be the same pattern as my MIL had when she got married), and the Noritake that was sold in DH's hometown. Then a couple of years ago DH got tired of me complaining about how I wish I had some really cool square and contemporary dishes... so he bought me a set for our anniversary. But, like I said, my favorite is the inexpensive Corelle that I bought myself. I use it everyday.

That said, I am continually amazed and disturbed by the amount of misinformation/disinformation that is disseminated in so many places on the Net as "advice" and "expert opinion." It's frightening how much of it is little more than hearsay or anecdotal in nature. I don't by any means claim to have all the answers, but in my efforts to educate myself, I've at least managed to come across details of some formal studies that have been done about a number of concerns that people may have regarding vent-free gas appliances. If nothing else, it's interesting reading and provides something more than the "my opinion," "I heard,", or "so-and-so says" type of often-misleading advice that emanates from forums like this. Admittedly, it is published by a potentially biased trade organization, but it at least presents the issues in a relatively objective way. Propane can be very expensive during the colder months and unless you buy your tank, you will be at the mercy of the company who owns the tank as to what they can charge per gallon to fill it, as well as when they fill it. I have propane, (cooking and cloths dryer) and tank rent was $35 a year, and when I didn't fill it for quite some time (it was a bigger tank) the company then wanted to charge me a $65 low usage fee on the tank too. I ended up buying a used tank and can now purchase the gas from anyone at anytime I please. Does your gas company have a monthly charge, regardless of whether or not you use any gas? Does the $3000 maybe take into account buying a smaller used tank? Do you intend to use the fireplace all the time as a main source of heat, or only occasionally? I see you are located in the PacificNW. I'm not familiar with just how cold or windy it gets there. I would consider gas costs aside from the initial installation costs. Sue

Looking back, I found the advice Mike A gave to be very good. A year ago I finally located a set-up - Uni-Weld regulators with long Victor hoses, full-size Victor torch handle with flame arresters, numerous Victor welding tips, cutting torch, sparker, tip cleaner, wheeled caddy, and about 20 welding rods - at an estate sale for $150.00 I was very pleased, and everything has worked out okay with it. To add to the assortment, I bought one larger welding tip and one larger cutting tip (pretty cheap when I think of how inexpensive the basic set-up was). I wonder how many other oxygen-fuel welders there are here? If you're here, please speak up, and maybe I could ask a few questions of you... I've only been welding for a comparatively short while. Look at the Lennox "Crestline" 36" or 42". It will meet your specifications. Little to no black metal, big flames,glass doors are optional, remote control option.

How large of space do you have available? If you don't want much heat, you'll want a B vent fireplace...which is for decorative use.

Direct vent with a faceless front and no louvres appear the most real. Check out Lennox Montebello and see what you think...they have 40 and 45 inch models. The 45" specs say it's 60,000 btu's but it's only 50.8% efficient.

I personally wouldn't go with a vent free due to the hazards of carbon monoxide. There are too many bad stories about this and there must be a reason they are illegal in many states.
