Cooking on a 50s fireplace

Fori

One of my "new" home's fireplaces has a built-in pot thingy. A cauldron on a swinging arm and a notch in the brick surround to swing the thing out to..uh...serve? I think it dates to the 50s. It's rather hideous but campy enough to enjoy.

Anyone have one of these, or remember actually seeing one in use? This isn't a colonial revival house or anything (that would almost fit, in a humorous kind of way)--it's a ranch. Maybe it's for popcorn? Or beans, cowboy style?

Who here cooks on their fireplace? :)
