Tomatoes, Yummy - For pasters = Margaretta moves on to the next round. Good production, early enough to get most of them harvested before the frost, and nice size that is not going to be too difficult to peel (they are in freezer bags right now). Sausage - did not live up to the descriptiion. By the time it started ripening, the plants were dead from the frost. Only got a few small fruits. Nothing to write home about. Large tomatoes I grew - Cherokee Purple - late to start, hiding the ripe fruit and split even though it got even water. The flavor was pretty good though. Red Brandywine - was one of the better producers, will be back next year for a repeat performance. Early girl - was one of the last to produce (go figure) but when she finally got going, was really on a roll. Will be back in 2009 for an encore. Spanish Sun - Nice uniform tomatoes with a good flavor. Worth the space and has a reserved spot for next year. Cherokee - interestling out performed its cousin (purple?) and will be repeating next year. Super Sioux - Wow, it was one of the first and kept going through the summer with really nice sized fruit. Was there ever any doubt? Celebrity - must have been 15 minutes of fame, cuz I know I planted it, but it never even made it out of the gate. It struggled and croaked in the first weeks of summer. I might give it another chance, but then again... Last, but not least, the misc yellow/cherries - Yellow Plum - I actually mistook it for Yellow Pear for the first few weeks, then I remembered that I never got the yellow pear planted. Performed famously and the chickens loved cleaning up the leftovers. If they were not totally ripe though, they were very sour. Lemon Boy - never produced any fruit, bummer I really wanted to try it. And last but not least - the one every one else is talking about, Sugary. It was totally buried under Spanish sun, but everytime I found it, it had some of the best little pink fruit I have ever tasted. Awesome stuff. I will plant more than one next year. Billie

I am a believer. My sister fed her beloved cat only kibble because "wet food makes her poop smell too bad." That cat had kidney failure by age 11. My own cat pretty much refuses to drink water. He used to drink it out of the faucet but he won't even do that now and never out of a bowl. Heck, I'd be happy if he drank out of the toilet! So, I feed him a 5 oz can of food per day and add extra water to it. He doesn't mind that I dilute it and he gets extra moisture that way. My brother's two cats are fed only kibble (the cheap grocery store kind) and both are very over-weight). I think what someone posted above about prey being 75% moisture says it all. PS: I wonder if my cat won't drink water because he getting all the liquid he needs from the wet food????

Here's more info from an article (link below). 'The study only found a link between vitamins and increased risk of death; it didn't prove that the supplements caused the deaths. The authors say the reasons behind their findings aren't clear..... To conduct the study, Mursu led a team who analyzed data from the Iowa Women's Health Study. The women in that study filled out 16-page questionnaires in 1986 about their diet, their use of vitamins and their general health. They recorded their of use of multivitamins, vitamins A, C, D and E as well as beta-carotene, B vitamins and minerals such as calcium, copper, magnesium, selenium and zinc. They were asked again about their supplement use in 1997 and 2004. The proportion of women who said they took one or more vitamin supplement soared during the study period, from 62.7 per cent in 1986 to 85.1 per cent in 2004. The researchers found that over the 19 years of follow-up, 41 per cent of multivitamin users died, compared to 40 per cent of non-users.' So basically, over 19 years, they were given a survey to take three times. The survey was self-reporting, which is not always the most reliable, as people tend to over or under estimate and report things about their compliance and general health...and there was only a 1% difference in mortality. I bet big pharmacuetical companies are jumping for joy about this study. Now we can all go to our doctors and get more pills for things that vitamins may have helped. I am leaning away from Mg given that the chlorotic (yellowing) symptoms are typically more "blotchy" looking and can be raised or puckered, and more vibrant yellow. Mg Def also begins on lower, mature leaves for what its worth. It looks more like Fe or N Def to me given the "paler" look to the chlorosis (S deficiencies are much less common, but are very similar to N Defs) the differences being that Fe Defs start on the upper, youngest leaves and can progress downwards and N Def start on lowest, mature leaves, sometimes N Defs can also exhibit a reddish cast, but not always. S Defs differs from N in that typically the entire plant will exhibit the symptoms you show on the two leaves and not just one portion or another. Hopefully this clarifies a little bit of the differences between all of these deficiencies.
