Woul;d walking or bike riding be better for You???

Does anybody know. I can go further on excersise bike than walking because of my knees.I fell down my stairs a couple years ago and damaged both knees.The only place I can walk here is one lane road with woods on both sides hubby doesnt like me walking there.

Try walking in place, inside on a padded carpet.

Then try bicycling and see how your knees feel.

My gym has a regular exercise bike with a standard seat, and one that is recumbant. I find the recumbant bike much more comfortable and I can endure much longer on it.

Once you've lost a few pounds, you can try walking on a treadmill with no incline set, and good quality shoes.

Then alternate each day. They both have good benefits. It sounds like due to the isolation of your trail that walking may not be available to you. (and I sympathize - my DH refuses to walk with me and I don't like to go alone). If you look into bikes, try them out in the store before you buy.

Sure, when cutting with my ZTR I am moving at a much faster speed than I did walking with my Toro. So it is not just from the much bigger deck size. It is also a much more enjoyable experience. I kind of went bigger than I needed but that's kind of how I roll. My lawn has never looked better and my neighbors have asked me to help them out with their lawns. I've had my ZTR for almost 3 months and have already made about $300 aerating (not the best time of year but it helped) and mowing a few times for the neighbors. My wife thinks I'm crazy but it is kind of fun riding around on the mower so why not make money doing it. haha Most ZTR dealers will bring one buy and let you demo it. You might want to try that out. They are very easy to operate and you can cut around a poll almost as close as a push mower. Ther are some areas as I mentioned before where their size limits where you can cut - between trees, corners, by HVAC units etc. I trolled around on these boards for at least a year before I pulled the trigger and bought my ZTR. I found Gravely to be the best value. I got IZT hydros, 18 HP Kohler engine and a fabricated deck. I think it was on sale for like $3299.

Suzanne, the morphing from fisherman to Guggenheim Fellow has been quite a trip. He told me one day I had been his role model, morphing from stay-at-home mom to starting college at 40 and making it to college professor. Nothing could ever make me feel better about my own life than that. I'm sure plenty of people have had things like this happen to them. You watch one person do something you did not think possible and you become more confident yourself and perhaps move ahead into exciting transitions yourself. Now that the ride is over, I realize that I was pretty scared about riding a bike alone such a long distance. Yet I think the bike was a lot safer than walking, especially because Paul is a small man, barely 5'2", and dark. At least there is chance at a faster getaway. I was afraid when he was in the Southern states he's be taken for an illegal! He says the problems were in the cities--Lafayette wins the prize for bike-bashing drivers. As for Jesse White Crow walking, that's pretty amazing. I'll Google him because I'd like to know why he's making this trek. I do think it's dangerous because one man alone can be fair game to even two more people. And if he is a man of color, it's certainly much more difficult.

By the way, the last few km and the final velodrome sprint are here, complete with a surchauffe commentary by the Belgian announcers. Many bike races are not broadcast in the US, so cycling fans huddle over keyboards, watching grainy videofeeds like this one from a European broadcaster. Since you may not speak French, or at least not surexcited, half-screamed Belgian French, I will narrate. Starting at 2:40 - Cancellara and Vanmarche enter the velodrome together for the final 1 1/2 laps. They pedal slowly, calculating. Vanmarche, the young rider with no contract for next year, has delivered the ride of his life and is seconds from an incredible, career-making victory. A win at P-R will assure his employment for years. And he knows he is the better sprinter. Cancellara, the veteran and nine years' senior, has overcome almost the entire peleton today but desperately wanted to shake the young rider and arrive in the velodrome alone. He's lost P-R in sprint finishes before. They slow to a walk, climb high on the banking, each trying to maneuver the other into the lead. Vanmarche takes it. Confidence, or inexperience? They proceed around the velodrome, Vanmarche checking over his shoulder, listening for Cancellara to jump, Cancellara waiting for Vanmarche to jump and poised to follow. They move high on the banking, then Vanmarche dives down the steep slope, sprinting as hard as 250 km of racing in his legs will allow. Just 100 meters, oh Dieu, just 80 meters more! I don't know what language Cancellara prays in - being Swiss, he is polyglot - but something gives him wings. Cancellara matches the younger man's acceleration, gets tight in Vanmarche's slipstream, builds momentum, and swings out. Vanmarche is the faster sprinter, but he went too early, gave Cancellara too much time, now his legs are cramping, muscles unable to obey his screams, through his tears he sees Cancellara rise up in victory. Cancellara steers his bike to the infield and falls off, chest heaving, immobile but weightless. All the pressure is gone. With every team attacking him for six hours, bruised from two crashes in the prior week, his own teammates long gone, he hurt himself like never before and won his third P-R. (Don't feel too badly for Sep Vanmarche. I'm quite sure he will have a tidy contract with a solid team for 2014.) Well, I was almost 9 years old before my parents could afford to buy me a 2-wheeler! This was during the depression! I finally shamed them into buying me a bike by telling them i'd be riding my tricycle to high school if they didn't soon buy one for me! It didn't take me long to learn how to ride it. and training wheels hadn't even been thought of! We lived in town, with sidewalks! And then, i learned another lesson! My Dad had scrimped on his lunch money to afford to buy the used bike! I had got into the habit of parking the bike beside the front porch steps when i came in for lunch! Mother told me many times not to leave it there, but i knew better! One day, after lunch, i went outside to get the bike out and---gonzo! Ohhh! I looked all around,but---GONZO!! And when i went back in and told Mother, all i got was a stony look, and the instructions to go buy my own bike if i wanted one! And, i didn't get an allowance--and, i didn't get another bike! And now, folks set perfectly good bikes out for the garbage man to haul away! They usually have a flat rear tire, or chain problems. I walked for years at a local lake. till I fell . so I have treadmill. I also have that great bike I love it.No theres no where to walk. Roads are narrow dangerous.Like I said the other one is isolated. No hubby doesnt need any excersise he cant it his butt what he has of one down.Hes a workaholic.

Ive heard that the bike is good for working off calories, but that walking is good for keeping your bones strong.

well I was to the dr yesterday as usual they weigh you I lost a few pounds and went down 1 pants size in 3 weeks so its helping that way.I do feel good.Little more energy.

I was ill for years, lost a lot of weight and a lot of muscle mass. At one point, my knees were so weak that I had to crawl up the stairs.

I found some gentle knee exercises that I did to strengthen my knees (actually, my thigh muscles) before I ever started working out. This website is about what I did.

Now that my knees are stronger, I do both the treadmill and the recumbant bike, plus the Nautilus circuit. All of them seem to be working, because I can now easily go up and down stairs.

I've got one bad knee, and two bad ankles...and biking is the only aerobic exercise I get- swimming's always a lazy thing for me, but biking really gives me the need for speed-

the exercises that joanne's website shows are great, I'm one of the many who swear by the chondriton/glucosamine and Magnesium/calcium supplements...

I may never play rubgy again- but I can not only sit cross-legged again, I can STAND UP from that position without using me hands...

and that's something, indeed,

Yes the bike I have you kind of lay back,You are so comfortable on there compared to a regular bike.I walked many many miles every day tilkl I fell down stairs damaged knees.Walking is great.

I'm with chinacat, too - I swear by glucosamine/chondroitin. There are actually some small peer-reviewed studies out there that show a benefit to it.
