Grandma used to wear a long white Spanx-type thing under her summer whites. She always looked very put-together... Would that be an option you'd consider?

I have flesh colored panties to wear under white slacks. However, I am not comfortable in any pants that are too see-through! The ones made of light weight material that is cool in summer are too transparent and the non-see-through are too heavy for summer. If they don't fit too closely they are less transparent.

J.Crew has a nice lined linen pant. Not white white, but an off white.

Dedtired, I'm the same way... I have nude undies to wear, but I still feel uncomfortable if I think my pants are too sheer. I know exactly what you mean Natal, the quality of some t-shirts is ridiculous. I also hate to pay too much for white clothes, because I usually only wear them one season, maybe two, before they start to look less 'crisp'... white to me always looks dingy after awhile. There is a pair on the J. Jill site that look interesting....(thank you!) I've never worn J. Jill before. Do they run fairly true to size?

What about a travel type pant like Royal Robbins or similar company out of that light weight but opaque sport fabric. I bought my MIL a shirt from them because she is allergic to the sun and can't stand the heat. She says it breathes wonderfully.

Linen, real linen, is a high maintenance fabric. It wrinkles, and then you either have to dry clean it, wash and then iron it, or be prepared to wear it wrinkled.

If you want white linen, these are lined:

But you could also look for a nice twill or a polished cotton, and they shouldn't be see through.

I bought a pair of white trouser-style pants last year at JCPenney. I just checked the label and they are Worthington, which I think is their store brand? I'm sure they weren't expensive because a) I'm cheap and 2) I won't pay a lot for white items since they need frequent replacement.

They were thick enough not to be see through but not so thick or lined that would make them too hot to wear in the temperatures I would be wearing white pants. I had the tailor cut out the back pockets to eliminate lines.

I've worn them once, on vacation in the Dominican Republic. I guess I like the look on other people but I'm just not that comfortable with them on me.

Yes, linen was just a thought, a 'maybe'.... I realize 100% linen is high maintenance, so it would be a blend. Or not linen at all. I'm not married to the idea any specific fabric. I would like something not sheer, and fairly easy-care for week ends away, etc. I bought a pair of navy pants yesterday that are 55% linen and 45% cotton. They seem like they might be promising, and the woman at the store said they will probably get white in later. They're casual, a bit sporty.... very much like these ones from Gap.

I love those Gap pants you showed. Also like the looks of the perfect khaki they show on the side of the one you featured. White khaki can look "luncheon" dressy when pressed nicely.

I need to clarify -- Grandma's 'under-slacks' weren't panties, and went to just below the knee. They were more like a girdle, so would be a 'skin-tight liner' of sorts.

But I absolutely agree about the see-thru aspect -- YUCK! And if the point is to beat the heat, wearing a Spanx-thing underneath would kind of defeat the purpose.

I bought some linen blend white crop pants from Coldwater Creek that were perfect. They had a satin lining but I took it out and they were still thick enough to not be see-through but light-weight enough to run around in Bermuda.

I don't normally buy from Coldwater Creek because they are more styled for the older woman but that might be the reason they weren't too thin.
