recording dvd from dvr

I have a Time Warner Cable Box with DVR as part of the box. I have the capability of recording several hours of progamming. As the programs are recorded they are put on a list, latest first and then you can view them at your leisure. Shortly, I will buy an HDTV and will have to change the cable box. I would like to pick out a few of the saved programs and record them on a DVD. I have a combination DVD/VCR recorder that I just purchased. I tried to do this without results. Although I did get the audio part. Does anyone know if and how this can be done ? Thanks.

DVD recorders and DVD Burners both create DVDs buy "burning" via a laser to a blank DVD disk. However, A DVD recorder typically refers to a standalone unit that resembles and functions very much like a VCR. All DVD recorders can record from any analog video source (most can also record video from digital camcorders via firewire). Like a VCR, DVD recorders all have AV inputs as well as onboard TV tuner for recording TV shows. DVD Recorders come in several configurations: Standalone, DVD Recorder/VCR Combo, or DVD Recorder/Hard Drive combo units. Might work then you have a pc without a burner, sound like the laser in the DVD recorder mey be bad that's what recognizes the disks

Hi, not sure if I can help. I have the tivo with the built in dvd recorder. Are you trying to watch tv and record to dvd (off your play list) at the same time?? I have my cable on 2 different inputs on my TV 1 input for tivo and one stright off the cable box. I can watch 1 channel and still record another thru tivo. That way you can set a program on your play list to play and record it on your dvd while you watch another channel thru the other input. Also I have it set up on a wireless network and can send programs to my computer where I can burn them to dvd. Not sure if any of this helps or if I really understand your situation. Good Luck

If you are skillful with your PC, there are several cards out there that will turn your PC into a viable DVR. Your biggest problem may be having a large enough hard drive. One manufacturer that comes to mind is ATI. They have one video card that performs hardware compression of the video before putting it on the hard drive.

It's very technologically possible, but TV production companies, cable companies etc. would prefer consumers not be able to easily make/trade digital copies of shows. Since most people's DVR comes from their cable/satellite company the manufacturers "allegiance" (via profit motive) lies with the purchaser (cable company) not the end user. Consumers haven't demanded it so there we are. I have one after market DVR/DVD burner. I can copy programs recorded on the DVR onto DVD, but only as analog, not digital. (Okay it's digital, converted to analog and back to digital). Digital to digital would result in no signal loss. I think using a computer as your DVR may have the most flexibility at this point.
