Is this radio interference superficial or damaging?

Hi, I'm new to this forum, though I've posted at GW in times past.

I have what I think is a simple question... for someone that knows about electronics (not me).

I have a radio and a humidifier-gadget, love them both. The photo shows them, with the plugged-in radio 'off' and the plugged-in humidifier 'on.'

The humidifier causes interference to the radio if both are ON -- static, weakened signal. I've tried moving the humidifier to different spots, but it seems to cause a degree of interference wherever it is (unless it's out in another room).

Our house is old but we did update and had the wiring inspected. That's not to say we are very modernized, though. The interference MAY be due to circuitry, but I know there are at least a few different types of radio interference (because I tried to find an answer by googling...!).

My question of the day IS:

If I leave things as they are (because I want them both where they are) but just don't run them at the same time, will my radio get damaged just by existing, plugged-in, near the humidifier? My guess is 'no,' that it's just an annoying interference but not damaging.

That interference/static could only hurt your radio IF you crank it up so loud that the static damages the speaker. I doubt you would do that.

However, the moisture put out by the humidifier could cause corrosion on the radio's circuitry. You may want to separate them for that reason.

Yeah, I love the radio... and I got it with a rebate for 1/2 the price, which was nice.

As for the humidifier, the Aroma-Sonic puts out such a fine mist that it doesn't even dampen a piece of paper left for hours in the path of the mist -- I tried it. And it's so very dry here in my house, at least now in the wintertime.

This is what the FCC tests are all about-radio frequency interference (RFI). All electronic devices sold in the USA are supposed to be tested and approved by the FCC. In short, any electronic device may cause interference with any other electronic device. In theory, the manufacturer of the offending product is supposed to rectify the problem-but getting it proven (is the affected device defective? Is it too sensitive? Is something in the environment contributing to the problem?) is all but impossible, unless there are a bunch of identical devices causing problems or the interference is huge. Bluestar ranges are not required to receive FCC testing, because they contain no electronic devices. Yes, they contain electrical devices, but no active components. Induction cooktops obviously contain electronic devices and are thus subject to testing, as are computers.

It's a longshot. The isolation capacitors may be failing in your set. A quick-and-dirty test... 1 - Unplug the set and anything attached to it. 2 - Unscrew the cable line and disconnect ALL A/V cables from the set. 3 - Place a low-ampere (lees than 1) 250-Volt, fast-blow fuse between the ground on the cable coax and the TV cable ground. Do not connect the center conductor. You should bypass the cable box when doing this. Use jumper wires with alligator clips for a good "hands-off" connection. 4 - Make sure you or no-one else is touching the cable line. 5 - Plug in the TV. If the fuse blows, your set needs to be serviced. DO NOT use the TV until it's repaired, as it may damage the cable line, or YOU. Peace. Marco

TV interference can be very difficult to diagnose and it could be coming from many sources. If I had to make a wild guess, based on your simple description, I might suggest your problem could be caused by "power line" interference. It typically shows up as random/intermitant lines (dots and dashes) running through the picture and (if it is bad) "static" also coming through the TV audio (in sync with the video 'noise'). Usually this type of electrical interference is worse on lower channels (2-6) and starts to fad out (decrease) for the higher channels. One way to help verify this is to listen to an AM radio tuned to a not-too strong station and see if you can hear the static in the radio when you see the problem on your TV. If you can coordinate the problem on the radio TV it is a good indicator the problem may be coming from a faulty 'power line', probabaly somewher close to your neighborhood. Powerline interference bad enough to disrupt TV and radio signals is usually caused by loose or cracked insulators, loose connecting hardware on te powerline, bad lighening arrestors or silly things like a piece of chain or wire thrown over a high voltage line. Often times powerline interference is worse on a dry, windy day. (Interestingly/surprisingly when it rains this type of interference often STOPS becasue the electrical arcing is reduced due to the slightly improved conductivity of the water which reduces the electical arcing!) If you can confirm the interference may be coming from the powerline you may be able to (hopefully) get some help from your local power utility. Good luck.

So what if you go through the list, and are still having problems? Because our 3 year old cat was so playful, and we thought it would be nice for him to have a buddy, we adopted a 2 year old neutered, declawed male cat from an animal shelter. After their initial adjustment, they seemed to get along well. The new cat was never very affectionate with us (our first cat is), but I don't think that's all that unusual. All was well for a few months, then the new cat started pooping outside the litterbox. My vet said he had colitis, and gave him some prescription food to try, which worked well - I kept him on the prescription food, and he always pooped in the litterbox from then on. A few months later, though, he started occasionally peeing on our beds. Thinking it was another medical issue, I took him to the vet a couple more times. He didn't find any medical issues - said it was most likely behaviorial, and gave us some Feliaway and advice similar to the above article. We had two litterboxes, and both were in the laundry room (upstairs). I could imagine that the location and/or noise might be an issue, or maybe privacy (our bedrooms are all upstairs), so I bought two additional litterboxes - one for the main floor (covered), and one for the basement (uncovered). I scooped all litterboxes daily, changed litter, tried different brands, etc. He continued to pee on the beds, and then later started peeing on our leather furniture, and carpet. I ended up returning him to the animal shelter, but have always felt terrible about it. I know that being a good pet owner means that you are willing to spent a certain amount of time and money when necessary, but after paying for several trips to the vet, Feliaway, replacing mattress pads, carpet pad, sections of subfloor, pillows, and buying gallons and gallons of Nature's Miracle and Urine-Off, I just reached my limit. Thank goodness for our first cat, or my confidence as a cat owner would be completely gone. Still, I don't think I will ever get another cat - I feel horrible that our second cat's behavioral issues were just beyond my capacity. Every time I see an article like this, I read it and think, did I do all I could? One of the most frustrating experiences I have had.

try runnign an extesion cord to an outlet that is on a different breaker in another room and plug either of them into it. if the noise goes away, it is jsut electrical hum caused by teh motor in teh humidifier and simply putting it on a different circuit will solve the issue. if the noise stays teh same, then it is RFI and only moving them apart will solve it.

in either case, neither is a more than an annoyance.

Thanks again... I'll give that a try.

It'll be a few days before I can remember where I put the extension cord I need. We just got our power back after a 4-day outage due to the ice storm here in Massachusetts. My house needed sorting out before the storm, and now it REALLY needs it!

Keep the two separated but a word to the wise: Ultrasonic humidifiers are cool, but unless you use distilled/demineralised water, you will get a fine mineral dust deposited on everything and it can damage some items. When water evaporates naturally, it leaves the minerals behind in the vessel, but when it's atomised ultrasonically, it makes the minerals go with it, so they float around in the air.

Aha, I wondered why there's never any of the chalky white powder left stuck on the humidifier, like there after using the evaporative types.

I have usually used twice-filtered water, though lately I've used bottled water that's usually also been boiled in the teakettle.

I just bought some distilled water today, though, since reading your post, pjb999. Thanks for the information.

I would possibly get more overall room humidity by using the traditional humdifiers, but I got so tired of trying to keep them clean (I was using about 5 at a time, in different rooms). I have issues with my hands being in kinda bad shape and so it's one less career I need, scraping humidifiers... !
