Banana shakes okay?

I've been having a concoction of my own for a few years, without caring whether it did harm or good. I take a banana, mash it inside a mug with a fork so that it remains chunky, and mix in some milk and 2 teaspoons of sugar. I have this twice a day. Now, a friend told me that he had read somewhere that bananas and milk are fine, but when mixed together are not healthy "for guys". I don't know how true or false that is, so I was wondering if someone knew something about it.

I would think that is a bunch of bunk!!! Hope you use 2% milk and Splenda.....

$18 is, in my experience, neither an especially good deal nor an outrageous rip-off. A plant the size of blutarski's, which appears to be in a 4-inch pot (?), would cost $7 where I work, but it would also probably need to be moved up into the next-largest size (I haven't up-potted them because 1-there are many, many more urgent things that need to be done right now, and 2-smaller pots are cheaper, and I'm hoping that cheaper will sell better. Though that doesn't seem to be how it goes.), and the next-largest size would cost you $20. If the plant in question is twice the size of the one in the picture, then $18 is somewhere on the slightly-cheap side of average. On the other hand, I've seen related plants (not 'Moonlight,' but I think 'Autumn') at Lowe's for $7-10. Lowe's plants are of unpredictable quality, availability, and price, but yes, if you hold out, you might be able to get something roughly equivalent for less money.

Hi Nancy, It might possibly be a Super Dwarf Cavendish. Dwarf Cavs get bigger. But I could be wrong. My Dwarf Cav is about 7 feet tall. Yes, you'll be needing to pot that up to a larger pot pretty soon. I would recommend putting it in a light-weight plastic pot, then setting THAT inside a ceramic pot -- if you like that look. It's going to get mighty heavy carting around that ceramic pot. Dappled sun is OK to grow as a foliage plant. Also, you don't really need to feed it all that much if just growing for foliage either. I don't think you want a 5 to 6 foot plant do you? Where are you putting it over winter? If you want fruit, this is a whole 'nother story. It needs to grow big and fast. You should plant it in the ground in the summer and dig each Fall. I would not have your heart set on getting fruit. It is hard to do in the North.

I got a Red E Ventricosum banana late this spring. It did well in a pot getting quite large. About July I put it in the ground and did okay for awhile then started growing backwards (declining).. its pretty small right now..it really does dislike the hotter night temps as Eric (a previous poster) mentioned. I have grown both the green and red ones from seed in pots in S. Louisiana and they did quite well. They can get huge when they are happy. I'm going to put mine back in a pot again and see if it improves now that the nights are cooling off and it seems to be perking up a little. I think it takes the humidity better in a pot, based on my experiences. I also think they appreciate a little shade in the hottest part of the day here. I also grew these in AZ with basically no humidity and way above 100F temps during the summer they definitely hated that but survived with some shade and a misting system I had set up for my tropicals. My two Zebrina bananas are doing quite well, currently, in the ground and are beautiful. I've killed (or the winter, I should say, killed) 2 Siam Ruby bananas here but that was before I had my greenhouse techniques refined lol. ~Sjn

I felt it up here in Allentown, PA. I thought the cats were just being extra crazy, because they were running around. Okay, and I might have taken a percoset for my knee and been a little dizzy anyway. I didn't even KNOW about the earthquake until my brother texted me and said "Hey. Heard about the earthquake. well I can't have it, but I am diabetic. It sounds fine to me. You get potassium & calcium etc. That has to be good.

It's not healthy because adding the sugar cancels out any health benefits. There's plenty of natural sugars in the banana and the milk alone. By adding sugar you've made it into a high calorie, high carb dessert. You might as well sit down to a small dish of ice cream.

I agree with kimba00. And you are having all that sugar twice a day, definitely not good. Start by cutting the sugar in half, and I also hope you are not substituting the two shakes for meals. You can also use low-fat plain yogurt instead of the milk.

He said that a friend told him: bananas and milk are fine, but when mixed together are not healthy "for guys", then asked if it is true or not. He didn't ask if the addition of sugar is healthy.

I think that claim about bananas + milk for guys sounds ridiculous. Maybe that was true about one guy who had a big digestive problem and couldn't eat normally.

Tho' you didn't ask about the addition of sugar, I do agree with the others. It is totally unnecessary with the banana which is already sweet enough.

Thanks for all the info. Jenn, in the last post hit it on the head when she drilled down on the question. On a side note however, I will also cut down on the sugar... and no, I don't substitute it for meals.
