For Lukki - here is my spring planter - - -

I've been promising her I'd share this. This is an old copper boiler that I've been using as a planter on our front porch. Color works great with our house since we have dark green door/shutters and verdigris lights.

I was thrilled to find live pussy willow branches - sold in bundles. Love them!! There are daffodils, tulips - pink of course, which are just opening, violas, pansies, candy tuft and ivy. I'll change things out as it gets warmer.

I'm not Lukki, but that's beautiful! Because of the heat last summer every one of my porch plants died. :(

I see you also have rabbits. Me too!

Thanks ya'll for the nice comments :) The bottle bugs are made with small bottles I already had because I collect them. I just wrapped with wire around the bottle and tightened it up and made the shape of the wings by wrapping around a bottle, the eyes are either washers or flat marbles siliconed on or wrapped with wire,so are the "feelers" or antenna :) The metal flowers I bought at Dollar General last year, I forget but maybe $2.50 each or $3.00....and I see they have them again this year. Mine have faded and gotten very slight rust. They're in a flower bed with a tin cat and a tin cardinal. I remember last year someone made a gate covered in metal flowers they made, but I don't remember the name of the post. They were beautiful! Maybe someone else remembers these :) Again thanks for the nice comments!

In order to have garlic scallions, I think that you'd be planting cloves weekly. There's no way that you could make one big planting one month and expect to harvest scallions all the following month. One thing about spring planting is that growth is very rapid. To win that argument two years ago, I had green shoots in a week and they caught up to their fall-planted kin within another week or so. They don't mess around growing slow in warm weather! I've already covered bulbils which will give you a mixed growth rate and would permit a longer harvest period. Only problem is that bulbils are so varied in size and growth habit and hasn't been researched much for scallion purposes. That leaves a third option that may be the answer. That would be to plant an entire bulb. For the past several years, I somehow have managed to not get all of the old topsetter garlic out of the walking onion area. Having to almost battle for an inch of ground, they are thin scallions right now and no bigger around than a pencil. Same variety in the regular bed has stems over an inch thick. At the same time, there somehow was a garlic bulbil which ended up in a tomato area a year ago. I didn't bother with it since I thought that it was just another leek. When it began growing this spring, it was obvious that it was not a leek or onion but a clump of garlic! There are about a dozen plants right now and they seem to have been stuck for a month at about a foot tall. From a single beginning, they are now all individual plants competing for the same little bit of ground. I would almost be willing to bet that that cluster could be harvested as garlic scallions a month from now and they will still be OK. You may experiment planting softneck and hardneck bulbs at the same time after midsummer. From experience thus far, I know that at least one hardneck will perform that way. Softneck varieties would give you a lot more but I'm uncertain of the size or quality. Oh, more than pleased to see that we've now almost all agreed on what constitutes a garlic scallion! Martin

Yesterday, went to the paving rock store bought new york bluestone for patio pavers. Potted sprouts from ziplocs(morning glory and sweetpeas) weeded a little, stared hard at the garden looking for things to come up. Found some turk's cap lillies poking up that I forgot about planting last fall I remember geting some kind of good deal now there are 4 or 5 of 'em... Today, mixed some peat and manure and leveled out one side of the perennial bed.. moved some big field stones to that edge from different parts of the yard (well, mostly DH did that..BTW he said just now what's DH? dumb husband?) Moved some hollyhocks and kiss me over the garden gate reseeds to the back of the bed because they're so tall they'd block everything else if they stayed in the middle. Moved a peony that's not been getting enough sun. Planted annual poppies (shirleys and somniferums) planted blue and red flax and some love in a mist...Saw one of those yellow "monarchs".. Worried about my tea roses that seem to be mostly still asleep(if not goners..) hoping it's still worth holding out hope for them.. basked in the sun a little..(when did i have time ?...)

After ice pellets and freezing rain, taking down a bunch of power poles ... ... there's more snow today, and it's going cross-ways the windows. A few days ago when it was going across, some closer to horizontally, I said that I didn't plan to go out, anyway. But today there was to be a discussion group of usually 8 or 10, meeting at church to discuss articles in our denomination's magazine ... and I was to lead. Figured I'd be a wimp and wear my hood. So - here I am, talking to you folks, as well. 'Sno joke, folks: it's SUPPOSED to be SPRING! Even this far north (and I am farther south than some of you in the northern prairie states, being slightly north of Detroit, about even with Port Huron). ole joyful

Tina,

I love your spring planter. I have an old coal bin that we use for small log storage in the winter that I think would work as a planter so I could copy your idea. It looks so spring-like!! Where did you find the live pussy-willows? Those are one of my favorites!

Nanny - do you happen to have a Fresh Market? That is where I found them. I was going to just use some kind of branches and went to the Fresh Market one day last week to pick up a few goodies and they were sitting right outside the front door (in water). I think the little fuzzies look like bunny feet! LOL

Tina, I love your planter and arrangement. I live in RI
and just love pussy willows! I planted some last year
but they didn't take...not the right soil mixture etc.
so just last week they had bunches @ our "Whole Foods"
and I bought two bunches as they remind me of my late
grandmother who loved them and always had them in her yard.

That is beautiful! Thanks so much for sharing Tina, I love it. I think we are going to do something with our front porch this year and I'd be tickled if I could find something like to use for the spring and summer months.

We have a couple of posts I want to move around so we can put up railing and create a sitting porch. I can't wait!

Wish I had a green thumb...

There is not a Fresh Market nearby, but there is a Whole Foods, (thanks irish2!), I plan to check there. I love pussy willows!

Very pretty! I like the idea of sticking in the pussy willows.

I planted pussy willows last year, and they took off like gangbusters--I have some in a vase in the living room right now and I am loving them. They say "spring" even though outdoor temps say "summer".

Do the pussy willows root? Do you throw them away when you're done with them or do you plant them? I seem to remember from my childhood that you could put them into water and they would develop roots, same thing with forsythia branches.

Very nice! I have an old copper boiler (used inside for various purposes).

Have a question, how do you handle drainage? I don't know if I could bring myself to drill holes in the bottom of mine. :/

It's lined with heavy plastic and then rocks beneath the soil.
