Cell Phone-looking for one that can make calls

6 years ago, I had a motorola Startac phone with verizon service that was fabulous. I had crystal clear calls and excellant connectivity everywhere in the USA. When I joined my husband on a Family share plan also with verizon, they wouldn't allow me use my phone because they said federal law required all cell phones to be tri-phase and my motorola was only dual. So I got a shiny new LG 4500. It really blows. I can't connect, it drops calls, words evaporate during conservations and I never can be reached. It sounds like I'm under water. All I want my cell phone to do is to send and receive telephone calls. That's it! But this hunk of junk can not accomplish that. I'm in the market for a new phone but realize that the cell phone technology has actually regressed. They've added in so many silly bells and whistles that they've lost the ability to function as a phone. CAN ANYONE RECOMMEND A PHONE? I want a good quality phone. I don't need music, call forwarding, internet, books on tape, photos........ Why is this so hard?

Assuming you're staying with Verizon, your best bets are either Motorola or Nokia phones. There are occasional Samsungs and LGs which get good marks for reception and call quality, but my experience with those brands and what I read about them indicates that it's hit or miss. I bought a new phone at the beginning of this year (wanted better reception than my Samsung offered and I was up for my New Every Two) and I ended up getting a Nokia. I really like it. It holds calls where the Samsung did not. I looked at the Motorolas but didn't like the menus or the displays, but that's just me.

If you want a simple phone, I'd check out the Nokia 2128i (real simple); the Nokia 6236i (make sure you can deal with the little "joystick" controller before you buy one); or the Motorola V325 (look at a real display, not just the demo unit)

One tip: if you go to a Verizon store and don't like what you see, go to a Circuit City (the Verizon-owned kiosks there carry some different phones) or a Best Buy (not run by Verizon, but official resellers).

Thanks for the info. I checked out the Nokias and the 2128 seems preferable to the 6236. I liked the Motorola but read that they often have a "bug" that causes the phone to freeze up requiring a hard reset by removing teh battery. It sounds like, if you get one that works-it's great. If not... Great advice though. Thank you.

Sure that is always possable. That can happen with cell phone and land line phones. This sounds more like a problem with her not knowing how to use her phone. Noone should be giving out private information over the cell phone anyways. You should only give out that sort of information when you are face to face with the other person. I would tell her to go to the people she bought the phone from and ask them how to use it. Look in the book that came with the phone for the icon that she sees. All phones come with an instruction book. She needs to read it. -renee

You know, the pipeline is so short on cellular products, any recommendations are meaningless. What's new today is obsolete tomorrow. I recommend visiting the Verizon store, check out what they are offering, see what deals they have, and go from there. Ultimately they are the ones that have to support you. So, they would not sell something they have to do a lot of work to keep alive. Shop on price and features alone. It's only a SIM card away. If you don't like it, take it back and try another one. My son just got a Samsung from T-Mobile. He had a Motorola but could never get service at his house even though the coverage map said he should have been good to go. His friend had the same plan with a Nokia phone with good bars. T-Mobile wouldn't spring for a new Nokia to try out, but they did give him a Samsung at no charge. He hates the leather case he bought for it. Does not fit well at all. But he gets calls now instead of notifications he got a call sometime in the recent past. Woohoo! Step in the right direction. Moral of the story is let the folks at the phone store help you figure out what fits you best.

Gayle, I deal with cell phones on a daily basis. I work for the dealer for our local cell phone service company. Usually when someone has a problem with their phone the first thing that we do to trouble shoot them is to take the back off and resart the phone. You wouldn't believe how many problems this solves. I've also been told by our tech suport that although it is okay to leave you cell phone on while it chargers, you should never, never, never leave your cell phone on a charger overnight. Do you remember the old cordless phones where you had to let the battery die completely out before you put them on to charge? A cell phone battery is similar, except you do not have to let it die. Over charging the battery on your cell shortens the life of the battery. Most cell phones only take abot 2-3 hours to charge. You should charge your phone only until the indicator light lets yo know there is a full charge. Hope this info helps!!

It's a feature you enable in your settings named "wi-fi calling." Your phone functions just like normally, making or receiving calls. But Instead of the calls occurring using the wireless signal of your cell phone carrier, they occur over your Internet connection. You need the right phone and you need to enable the feature in your settings. Other than that, you wouldn't know the difference since it's business as usual and there are no extra things to do when placing or receiving calls. When I am at home, my phone automatically picks up my router and all calls occur over the Internet. This is nice if you are limited to a certain number of minutes a month on your wireless plan, since calls over the Internet don't count against your plan. Not all phones can do this. For example, you need the newest iPhone (6 or 6s), or a pretty new Android model. And a few carriers do not yet make this available to their customers regardless of what phone they have. What phone do you have and who is your carrier?
