Start with some pan sauted tilapia, seasoned with a bit of Old Bay. It is a mild white fish and he may just like it.

Yes, I'd grill or saute tilapia with all the taco seasonings and disguise it in tacos! One of our local places does this with mahi mahi and it's quite good!

Classic fish 'n chips. The fish is mild and breaded, there's fries and sauce.

Unless you're his mom, it's not your place to force someone who doesn't care for seafood to eat it.

I don't like seafood either--as a matter of fact, just putting a bite of it into my mouth makes me feel physically ill. Not that I haven't tried it all--growing up my family loved seafood, and as a child, I was forced to eat all kinds of it. Now that I'm an adult, I don't have to eat it, and won't.

Whatever you decide to serve, make sure you have a hearty side (something like Mac and Cheese with a bit of ham or bacon in it) that can serve as an alternate main dish for this person. Don't force him, and respect his choice if he doesn't want to eat your seafood. I, personally, don't care where I am, I will never put seafood in my mouth again (and haven't in the past 40 years). He's got a right to his preferences, don't force yours upon him.

Susie - is there a reason he does not eat fish or seafood? An allergy? Or one of his parents did not care for it and so it was never served?

One of my nieces could not eat shrimp as a child. So she never served any kind of fish to her boys. Last summer they stayed with my older sister on the Delaware coast. The two boys ages 5 and 7 now want Maryland Crab Cakes all the time......and Great Aunt Mari's tartar sauce with a hint of cilantro. :-)

If "Beefy" is open to trying fish something like swordfish or marlin kabobs might be nice. They have a more meaty texture. Ease him into it if he is open to the idea.

I don't understand, he doesn't like seafood or fish yet that's what you want to make for him? Why don't you make him something he loves?

Why doesn't he eat seafood? I'd be very careful not to push the issue.

I don't buy, prepare or eat seafood (fin fish) for myself, wild or farmed - it's toxic, endangered and expensive. I will eat, quietly and without objection, it if it's presented as a meal by someone else.

How about shrimp or lobster - sort of manly seafood, as are crabs and crayfish.

I am guessing that he is often at dinner with the family and Susie would like a "fish" that he just might enjoy also when he arrives at dinnertime.

I too would just make something he likes. No need for him to eat what he doesn't like. I personally don't care for the taste of Talapia so Wayne knows not to make any for me, it would go to waste. Beef is what he likes so make that for him. If he wants to sneak a taste of the seafood you make, he can do that. But do have an alternative for him to eat.

I'm another one who wonders why you would want to serve him fish when you know he doesn't eat it? I get so tired of people trying to "sneak" venison into something they are going to be serving me when they find out I don't eat venison. For heaven's sake, I'm 50 years old. If I don't want it, I don't want it.

Why not a steak dinner with a first course of pasta and clam sauce or pasta and shrimp sauce or pasta and shrimp and clam sauce, or just a pasta, seafood side. That way he can skip the side if he really can't bring himself to eating it.

Most people can use wider culinary vistas. Of course you won't stuff unwanted dishes down his throat, but you're not talking about that.

The only fish I have found that non seafood lovers might eat and not recognize, is fresh tuna cooked medium rare (not black and blue).
But, I still think he needs to eat anything out of willingness to try something new, not out of manipulation or trickery.
And I would always have a meat he does really enjoy, not just sides.

We have friends who are absolutely repulsed by seafood in any form. If Matt's similar, you can forget sneaking it in to any meal. But if he's never tasted something yummy like crab cakes or such, perhaps its time to give it a try!

Neither fish nor seafood? (sigh) Two of my favorite meals but I agree, if he doesn't like them, I'd probably not try to fix the for him, unless he is agreeable to expanding his food horizons.

If he is will to try, I'd probably start with something very mild, like crab cakes, and if he really doesn't like them he can cover them up with a ton of sauce. Coconut shrimp would be another option, I'd stay away from strongly "fishy" flavors at first.

I don't care for tilapia at all, it's too mushy. Halibut is one of my all time favorites but I think if I were trying to get someone to actually enjoy fish I'd go with a very mild variety like lake perch, walleye or even cod.

Good luck, and as has been said, I wouldn't try to force it on him or "sneak" it into meals. If he really doesn't care for it and doesn't want to try it, I'd just be sure I had some peanut butter or deli type sandwich meat for him to eat along with whatever side dishes you are having.

Matt lives with us.
Growing up, Matts parents never cooked....they eat out every night or they get take out.
Living with us, not only has his weight dropped but he's very willing to try all sorts of new things.
He's never been exposed to a lot of seafood or fish but tells me he's willing to try just about anything.
A few weeks ago i made some pick and peel shrimp and he did try it but told us it wasnt his thing.
I guess im thinking with lent appeoaching id see what fish and seafood items would work.

Think of him as a blank slate!!

I really like the fish taco idea....sounds delish!

For what its worth, i always have canned soup and all sorts of frozen items he can eat if what i make is not to his liking.

Susie, if he's up for it, I'd try to entice him with mild-tasting seafood, like Turbot or Halibut. The former is a family favorite for its perfectly white and mild-tasting flesh.

Btw, 'Beefy' is lucky to have someone willing to go to the extra mile to broaden his food repertoire.

I never try to convince vegetarians to eat meat or the other way around, or someone to try food which he/she is alergic to.

Otherwise I think food preference has a lot to do with how one is raised. It can add a life time of enjoyment and good health if you can show, not force, someone the diversity of foods.

I don't remember how many of my non-seafood friends I have got them to enjoy sushi.

I'd suggest getting a nice fish for grilling! Orange Roughy is wonderful if you can get it and are willing. Tuna, halibut, swordfish, and haddock also come to mind. Use either blackening seasoning or marinate a few minutes in olive oil, lemon juice or vinegar, and some herbs.

Make him boiled shrimp w/ cocktail sauce if he's never had that!

Clam chowder also comes to mind, and around here New England style is definitely preferred.

If he likes cream sauces, try a mixed fish/seafood newburg.

I'd also suggest a shrimp scampi and serve w/ rice pilaf.

Something I used to make LONG ago, if I remember correctly, was: sautee lots of minced celery and minced carrots in butter. Pile the sauteed mix on top of flounder/sole pieces that are laid individually on a sheet of waxed paper. Top each with lemon slices, and fold up the waxed paper around each piece to make a nice little packet. I'd then bake in the oven -- cannot remember the temp, but probably 425F -- until the waxed paper would begin to brown. I recall them being perfectly cooked at that point. Sorry, but it's been SO LONG since I've made these I cannot remember exactly. I think it's time I tried them again. :O)

If he likes tomatoes & garlic I would suggest a cioppino. You could vary the seafood/fish depending on what's available or on sale. If you need a recipe let me know and I will post mine.

I have a snazzy GF grill....im thinking maybe some mild tasting white fish with some intense seasoning-maybe jerk or along those lines.

I think growing up eating out alot, he gravitates to good ole home cooking
He loves casseroles, soups stews ect and is willing to try just about anything.
Hes not a salad guy, so when i make salad i just tell him its there if he wants it....caught him trying some of Amys salad once. He never ate it again lol.

correction on my baked flounder, should you want to try it: I think I used parchment to make the packets... I just remembered thinking then that the wax on the paper might not be such a good idea. :O)

Grill a swordfish steak with montreal seasoning...tastes very similar to steak and is very meaty. Tuna is also a seafood most can tolerate that grills nicely. Scallops are a little bit of heaven if done with lemon juice and capers and white wine...meuniere. Perhaps eventually graduate to cod fish poached in milk...not the least bit fishy but so tender and juicy it melts in your mouth.
