Help! Which Liqueur or spirit for my fruit salad

We're leaving in an hour for a small and informal dinner party. I'm bringing fruit and cookies as requested by the hostess. I bought a prepared fruit salad from the deli counter which has raspberries, black and blueberries, pineapple, watermelon, maybe honeydew and a few grapes. I'm adding some orange slices to perk it up. I'd like to add a bit of alcohol to the fruit salad, but I'll only soak the oranges until I find out if the other couple drinks.

I have on hand-

vodka (raspberry and regular)

rum

cassis

Chambord

Triple Sec

Kirsch

Tequila

I'm thinking vodka with a splash of triple sec- what do you suggest?

The only recipe I use with alcohol has orange liquor so I would go with the Chambord.

I'm not clear on what you're saying-- chambord is a black raspberry liqueur. Triple Sec is orange flavored.

DOI: 10.1094/PHI-I-2008-0226-01 but heres a breakdown some grass does produce cyanide GAS but not common species and it wouldnt be in significant quantities to alter human, animal, or plant function unless we are talking vulnerable states e.g. impaired immune function animals or like seedlings or weak species of plants. but i dont believe grass will kill a citrus it may help aid its death if there are other factors going on like nutrient defficiency pests lack of water, poor photosynthesis blah blah blah. The main reason we pull out the grass is because its a prolific feeder and outcompetes the citrus. but what some have stated is somewhat true grass does emit volatile compounds as defenses at times but not in significant quantities to kill a citrus. id be interested in starting seedlings from seeds among grass seeds and see if there is a difference to a control group of seedling citrus not among grass seeds. This is one of my favorites: Shrimp & Snap Pea Salad with Ginger-Soy Vinaigrette Serves 4 as a main course 1-1/2 pounds large shrimp (about 32-36 per pound) 2 cups snap peas (about 1/2 pound, trimmed) 3 green onions, trimmed and minced Ginger-Soy Vinaigrette 1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil 2 tablespoons low-sodium soy sauce 2 tablespoons white vinegar 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice 1 tablespoon grated fresh ginger 1/2 teaspoon honey (my "tweak") 3 - 5 dashes hot sauce Garnishes 1/2 cup diced mango 1/2 cup chopped roasted cashews lime wedges Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add shrimp and cook 3 - 4 minutes, until they turn pink. Drain, run under cold water, peel and devein. Meanwhile, bring another pot of salted water to a boil, drop in snap peas and boil, uncovered, 2 - 3 minutes, until just tender and still bright green. Drain and rinse immediately with cold water to stop the cooking. To make vinaigrette: Whisk together olive oil, soy sauce, vinegar, lime juice, ginger, honey, and hot sauce in a small bowl until well-combined. The mid-town Manhattan location is always busy, especially with the many Broadway patrons before and after shows. I've even had the opportunity to bump into some of Broadway's biggest stars (I once saw Patty Lupone!) The food is always wonderful and plentiful, just like most Italian homes, whether it's one of their wonderful salads, hot or cold appetizers, delicious meat dishes, or, of course, the many pasta dishes they offer. One of my daughter's favorites is their Rigatoni with Broccoli, Garlic & Olive Oil which comes sprinkled with toasted breadcrumbs and grated Parmegiana-Reggiano. It's a delicious non-meat entree that will satisfy even the dedicated carnivores at your dinner table. Rigatoni with Broccoli, Garlic & Breadcrumbs Serves 4 3/4 to 1 pound broccoli florets 1 pound rigatoni 5 tablespoons olive oil 1⁄3 cup dried breadcrumbs 4 - 6 cloves thinly sliced garlic 1⁄4 teaspoon red pepper flakes 1⁄2 cup grated Parmigiana-Reggiano Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil.Add the broccoli and cook until just tender, about 5 minutes. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain. Set aside. Bring the water back to a boil and add the pasta.While the pasta cooks, heat 2 tablespoons of the olive oil in a large, deep skillet over low heat. I don't drink..but I bake with it.. I make my own vanilla and love it in buttercream frosting. I use golden rum. My husband always has a big bottle of Jack..or Jim..he likes his on the rocks, in coffee or in the summer as Lynchburg Lemonade. I do make my own Kaluha too. Just before Halloween I bought a bottle of Adult Limeade..cool bottle..very tequilla tasting(smelling)I think it will make a great cheesecake.. Chambord is my favorite to add to Chocolate cupcakes or brownies..but I also like to add some Frangelico to creamcheese swirl brownies...yummm... My son brought home some Pineapple Vodka..that smells good too...Oh and whipped cream vodka is good in frosting in place of vanilla.

Maire Cate, I lied! It was The Kitchn, NOT the Test Kitchen recipe! I've used so many recipes for turkey from the Test Kitchen (am a subscriber to the site now and to Cooks Illustrated for years prior) that I automatically wrote test kitchen, sorry!! The recipe I used is linked below, it is both easier and tastier than the test kitchen methods I have used (brining, roasting on a bed of veggies, roasting for just a few hours, etc.) The Kitchn method is absolutely the easiest one I have ever used, and one of the best, if not the best. I had a fresh turkey of almost 15 pounds for ten meat eaters. It was rinsed inside and out, giblets and neck removed from cavity (the former in a bag, thankfully), and dried, then sprinkled all over with salt and coarse ground pepper. No stuffing was put in the turkey. The oven was preheated to 450. I poured two cups of Swanson's chicken broth in the bottom of a roasting pan with deep ridges on the bottom and set the turkey in breast up. I untied the legs per instructions. The bird went in the oven on the next to lowest rack setting and temp immediately turned down to 350 degrees. After an hour I basted it with the juices and tented the breast, which was already a beautiful golden brown. You are supposed to take the turkey out and close the oven door when basting, so I did that and basted it two more times about an hour apart. The turkey was ready after 16 min. per pound, I was timing it but there was also a pop up timer in the bird as well, and I used a meat thermometer to make sure it was done. I took the bird out and it rested for nearly an hour while the sides heated up and we had our first course. My SIL's husband (she is my brother's widow) carved and the meat--- every bit of it---- was moist and flavorful and delicious! Best of all, the pan drippings made fabulous gravy, which I made by combining unsalted butter and flour in a large, straight-sided skillet into a roux that I browned a bit instead of leaving white. I used it to thicken the pan juices (which already included broth) by adding the broth to the skillet. I had about three cups of broth/drippings, which contained rendered fat, so I made more roux than I would have for liquid without fats. After thickening the gravy I added about four ounces of half and half and two of those small containers of Knorr concentrated, home style chicken broth. They are about 2" x 1.5" and come in a four pack. This method has to be tweaked on site for the amount of fat in the drippings but makes absolutely delicious gravy. The meal WAS wildly successful, thank heavens, and we did not have a lot of turkey leftover as our young men (ages 13, 16, 22, and 25) ate like there was no tomorrow :-). But there will be enough leftovers for HK to make a turkey pie or two for the coming week, unless we eat it all in open faced sandwiches with that fabulous gravy before the day is out! Sorry , I meant to say I would go with the Chambord because they offer it as a substitute for the Grand Marnier in my recipe.

Thanks! One more question, the bottle is old. I've always thought that liqueurs have so much sugar that it won't matter. Do you agree? Paging LindaC!

Okay, they're in the triple sec. I didn't have too much left, should I add a bit of raspberry vodka to spike them up? Or something else? Next time I'm buying Grand Marnier!

My recipe calls for 1 oz liquor to 1 lb fruit so you don't need too much. I'm sure that a bit of vodka wouldn't hurt if you want to add it.

Is your fruit salad dessert? Too bad you didn't have a half bottle of champagne or a sparkling wine. I'd add a little of the triple sec, which is a good substitute for the Grand Marnier and then just before serving pour in the sparkling wine. Great spooned over a grapefruit or lemon sorbet.

Wow that sounds great! I should have called you from the market at 5:30! I do have a bottle of sparkling wine-- Maybe we'll take it along. This one tastes great but drinking it straight gives me a raging headache, so it would be a good way to use it up.

Dessert was perfect! In the end we didn't open the sparkling wine, but instead spiked it at the last minute with a bit of raspberry vodka. The bowl was emptied! Thanks Ann, Linda and jcrowley!

I love to make fresh fruit salad for dessert, using the tropical fruits available here. My favourite liquid to pour over the salad is the juice of freshly squeezed oranges mixed with either Cointreau or Grand Marnier. Orange juice and orange liqueur go particularly well with papaya.

Liquor DOES go bad. Not that it will make you sick, (except maybe Bailey's, which will curdle), but the flavor goes off. Coincidentally, I had a bottle of Chambord that was pretty old. I was going to use it in something and thankfully poured a little shot first. The color was off and it didn't taste right. Not rotten, just not the way it's supposed to taste.

And you NEVER could have convinced me this was possible, but I also had a bad bottle of Vodka. I opened it, made a martini, and ECHHH! It tasted like lighter fluid! (Which I have never drank, but imagine that's what it would taste like.) I thought maybe it was because it was a different brand than usual, but it was just too disgusting. I emailed them, they emailed back and asked for my number, then called me and asked for some numbers off the bottle. They told me there was a 3 year shelf life and it had expired 6 months prior. Who'da thunk it? Again, it probably would not have made me physically ill, but the taste was awful.

Weed....it's much more likely that it was the vermouth that made your martini taste funny than the vodka.

I noticed the other day that I have 2 or 3 bottles of flavored rum, I know one is Mango...but forget what the other(s?) are(is?)...Bought from the sale aisle from a liquor store that was closing....isn't that always the best place to buy fine spirits???
Now...what should I do with those fruity things?

I don't put vermouth in my martinis. And before you inform me that there's no such thing as a martini with no vermouth, it's called a Bone Dry Martini. Occasionally I will have a Desert Martini. Pour vodka over ice, dip a toothpick in vermouth, stir vodka with toothpick.

Weed...that's funny....we had a bottle of vodka that was well over 20 years old. How old was yours? We finally used it up just before our kitchen remodel this past summer. (There was only about a shot left in it so I told my husband, grab your OJ, you're going to have a celebration drink! It was either that or I was going to have to haul that bottle with the rest of the liquor. We had our house termite-tented, and all food and beverages had to either be bagged or go with us to the hotel. We took the liquor with us.) Hubby said it was as good as it had been when he bought the vodka on deployment in 1983!

Glad that the fruit salad worked out. I would have gone with Triple Sec myself.
