Recording Records to CD via PC

I was born too soon for the digital explosion . I would like to copy my records to CD using my computer but can't get hooked up. Have the software , have the turntable , have an old stereo that has two double ports for tape player ( Play and Record ). Can I use the "Record" ports to connect to line in on my PC for recording ? Thanks , Art

Or maybe spend a lot of money on something new ??

You'll need specific "phono" input RCA jacks on your receiver, not just jacks for a tape player or Aux In. Turntables need a greater boost than other line-in items. The exception is with some newer turntables that have a switch on them to provide the necessary added boost so they can be attached to a standard line-in or tape input jack (and many newer stereo or AV receivers, or the little ones that are part of mini shelf systems, don't have a dedicated phono input). There are also gizmos available (for about $25 from Recoton the last time I looked) that attach between the turntable and aux-in jack to provide the extra boost.

I use a cheapo Radio Shack amplifier that includes the needed phono EQ for this purpose. Mine was sold under the Realistic brand, I think they've switched to the RCA brand (under license, same product) since then. It was about $60 new when I bought mine, although I paid less than half that on eBay.

I did just what you want to do . .

Use the "line out" outputs from the stereo receiver, connect to the "line input" of your sound card . . . and . . Voila as they say in France . . . The "line out" outputs use the required equalization for phono input; and their level is FIXED . . so that you can turn the speakers up and down as you wish . . without affecting what you're recording . . .

Creates *.wav files from your albums . . .

Some sound cards come with software; or there's some stuff out there for free as well; that will also allow you to put in a digital "pop" or "click" filter . . which most albums have some of . . .

Well, I have looked into building an adruino or raspberry pi wireless thermometer that can communicate to my pc, but the cost would approach around 60-75 dollars and I would have a lot of tinkering to do. I have settled on a Thermal Data Logger that records to an SD. They are cheap so I can use multiples. While its not a live feed I can use it to record and plot temperatures over time from multiple locations for analysis. You might also consider downloading a wonderful, free (!) sound editing program called Audacity. The interface looks just like a tape recorder, but it also gives you the ability to be more sophisticated in producing your recording without having to become a sound engineer. It will also allow you to choose what kind of file to save, and you can fit quite a bit more onto a cd using .mp3 than .wav files. Here is a link that might be useful: Audacity

Hi, I downloaded this software from the website listed below to record my albums and tapes to CD, using the computer. It was very easy to use. The program comes with audible instructions and wizards to walk you through it (including which jacks to use on your computer). It will automatically set the record level or you can adjust it however you like. It did not require a pre-amp...just plug in the tape deck to your computer. The turntable may or may not need a pre-amp, but the program will detect it, to let you know.I got the wire to hook it up at Radio Shack for just a few dollars. One end will have the RCA ends for your stereo equipment, and the other end will have the miniature jack for your computer. There was no loss of quality, and I was able to actually get a better sound on some songs with the built in equalizer. Hook the stereo equipment to the computer, put a blank CD-R disc in the drive, and the program will do the rest. Hope this helps. Here is a link that might be useful: Record Albums to CD
