Strange soil odor...
Comments (16)Try to remember that smell, Cherry, in case it occurs again somewhere else. If you ever walk into a building and smell it, DON'T turn on any lights. Leave and call for help from a distance. A natural gas filled house exploded in my area a few years ago, right after the owner got home one night. They think it was sparked from her flicking on a light switch...but can't ask her because she was killed....See MoreHelp! Pet odor in the basement - can't move in to my new home.
Comments (3)Are you sure this is all dog smell? That musty dog-like smell might be caused by humidity/mildew or even a dried-out floor drain. I had a minor sewer gas problem that didn't smell like sewage. Just really musty. In any case, you may need to get rid of the carpet entirely. Some smells just don't come out. You could also try sprays formulated to get rid of pet odours, and even spray some unlikely surfaces, such as exposed wooden ceiling beams, that might have soaked up the funky smell....See MoreHelp! Comments (12)Treating pet odors is what I do for a living and I see situations like this on a daily basis. I am going to asume your basement subflooring is concrete which is porous and will absorb urine and its odors. Bleach is the strongest household disinfectant you can use to kill germs and odors and it will do good as a initial clean-up on the surface which is the key word. After the bleach has dried the concrete still has wet urine and odor below the surface that is still off-gassing. The next step is get the concrete as dry as possible by using air movers and dehumidifiers together this equipment will also dry the walls if the cats have been spraying on them. Finally we use a industrial sealer that has a moisture barrier and a odor barrier once applied we guarantee you will never smell any pet urine odor from any area we treat. Kills is designed for smoke odors, as cat and dog urine acids will eventually weaken the product and the urine odor will be back. Enzymes are temporary fixes or are for minor problems per the manufacturers instruction the area has to stay wet for up to 3 weeks for best results and @$20-40 gal do the math bleach is better and stronger. Besides you have already cleaned the area now you have to get it sealed. Oh! and toss the carpet It would cost you more for a pet odor treatment then replacement. Comments (7)The more facts given the better the possibilty your mystery may be solved. Style of home? Age of home? Location, rural, urban, what is in area, such as totally residential to moderate or heavy manufacturing, school, restaurants etc. As much info as possible. Mechanical system of home, forced air, electric, type of hot water heater and age, AC, age of systems, type of plumbing materials. What is the prevailing winds direction where you are. Have you asked your neighbors if they have noticed anything different . Has the simplest thing changed since this has started, new appliance, furniture, home project. Those are a few of many questions that we need to base a theory on. Can you send a picture of the house, all elevations, and a overhead photo from Google earth. This can be a simple as a bad hot water heater anode to a drip from a plumbing fitting.. Several of these simple questions can not be answered by some homeowners, it may surprise you as how little residents know about their houses. The time of day this becomes a problem is good start, what happens at night that changes during the day, opening doors and windows happen, sun comes up, home is warmer, AC goes on, the world wakes up all types of activity comes to life. From factories running to laundry being done. More info=better solutions. It's usually the simplest thing that gives us the answer to a problem. As well the smallest thing we overlook as having nothing to do with it. You have to provide more information.
