Malagueta?

I visited Terceira Island in the Azores many years ago and every restaurant there served a cheese and malagueta appetizer. It was better at some places than others, and I always wondered what cheese(s) they used and how the malagueta was made.... I was certain it didn't contain tomatoes, was sure it was peppers, but the taste was somehow different. I never found anything on-line about it until today -- according to this site it's made with fermented sweet red shepherd peppers!

So now that I know how to spell it, has anyone ever made malagueta? have a good recipe? can it be made successfully with other sweet red peppers? what cheese would have been served??? I assumed it was made with cow's milk and most had a texture like goat cheese, if I remember correctly.

Malagueta is also a kind of hot pepper - which I happened to grow this year. It has a range of 60,000 to 100,000 Scoville units (jalapenos range at 2,500Ã¯Â¿Â½Ã¯Â¿Â½"10,000 Scoville units).

Anyhow, they grew beautifully - I dried them and ground them for spice.

Was the dish hot and spicy?

The peppers add a wonderful flavor to chili, etc. It is hot though.

That's awesome. Looks very nice. I planted all my peppers in pots so those are for the most part pretty well off! My garden however is a complete mess. I mixed up the seedlings so I have a patch that is waaay over-crowded. I had noo idea that Cucumber plants were spreading like weeds. They have grabbed hold of peas and everything. Dang! In the other part I put radishes and Carrots (OMG, I'm an idiot!) (Note to self! Carrots and radished can take 2 inches apart. Don't do that with Cucumbers). And what compelled me to plant 3 onions, only 10 Carrots (that is not growing anyway) and frikkin 20 Cucumber plants. *sigh* Maybe I'll take a picture of mine next year! Oh well, I was in a big hurry and only had about 45 minutes to plant everything back then. I own this place now, so I can plan it a "little better" next year.

Today's harvest. Harvest is from all peppers mentioned. Oh, the solitary yellow one is Trinidad Perfume. The fish, perfume, Peppadew, and Criolla De Cocina will be pickled using the recipe for peppadews. Most of the peppadews are unripe. So more will be processed as they ripen. LKZZ, each restaurant must have made their own version because they were not consistent. Some were spicier than others, and we liked those best, but none was extremely hot.

Thanks for that info -- I didn't know such a pepper variety existed. I'm assuming they are an OP variety. Did you save any seeds and might you be interested in doing a trade?! :)
