If you do happen to survive, and when you are able to face food again, I propose giving some thought to the unsexy but oh-so-vital subject of refrigerator temperature.

About a year ago, I bought a refrigerator thermometer with probes for the cooler and freezer and a digital readout that sticks to the refrigerator door. $25 or so. Then I began adjusting my refrigerator temperature. Now I keep the cooler at barely over 32F and the freezer at -5F. The result is that my refrigerator is a stasis field of science-fictional properties. Inside the magic box, time stands still, as does all bacterial activity.

I routinely keep chicken for well over a week, pork longer, and beef for multiple weeks. I dust the beef with salt, wrap it in paper towels, and place it in a loose and open plastic bag. So far, I have found no consume-by deadline for beef at 32F. Milk lasts seemingly forever, and I have no doubt that a half can of corn, thus refrigerated, would outlive me. I made some potato-leek soup over three weeks ago. The leftovers (I made way too much) are still in the refrigerator, and are perfectly fine.

I confess my electricity bill may be a tab steeper, but that is a small price for allowing a whole chicken to really become part of the family before doing it's glorious duty in the roasting pan.

Seriously, try setting your cooler at no more than 35F. Canned corn will no longer be a weapon of mass destruction. And you may even find your refrigerator sexy. Pant pant.

Don't save leftover canned stuff in their can. If it was in a ziploc or other container, it should have been fine... unless it had some kind of sauce on it??

I wonder if it could have fermented. Moonshine soup?

I keep my fridge really cold too John. That's why it takes about a week for a decent sized turkey to thaw in there. However, I had a scare last night my own self. About a month ago Christy helped me make dozens of small half pork and half meatloaf mix meatballs. Mostly so we can use them for swedish meatballs which she loves. Last night she made the dish by herself. I had gone over the details with her and told her there was some turkey broth in the fridge to use and then use some beef broth if she needed more. Ok, it was good. Late last night I go for my late snack [diabetes] and lo and behold, there is the turkey broth still in the frige. Hmmmm.... So, I have a cup of that with a few noodles as my snack. Fast forward to the middle of night when I go to bed, she wakes up for a minute and I ask about the turkey broth. Oh, she used it. Um.. no, you didn't. Yes I did, it was in the mayo jar. OH

And the all night vigil continues..... Pam if you are up and reading this, feel free to call me. I hope your night was quiet and uneventful, but if your body decided it didn;t like the 10 day old canned corn, it is better off getting rid of it.

I think we've all done that, and then sat all evening waiting for the food poisoning to hit - it usually doesn't. I think we are much more resilient than we give ourselves credit for.

Great Dedtired's ghost! She Posts! I think we've all used something questionable at one point and then wondered if we should have used it. Keep some club soda (seltzer) and candied ginger on hand to sooth your tummy.

I've had a couple of serious bouts of food poisoning in my life. Neither were fun! One experience sent me to the ER where I was given IV fluids, the other merely spoiled a vacation. Miserable stuff, but I lived to tell the tale.

Dedtired, hope you're all better ASAP! Take it easy. Keep us posted when you can.

WHEW! I made it through the night and my cast iron digestive tract seems unfazed by the experience. I sure was glad to open my eyes this morning and see I was still in my bedroom and not floating on a cloud wearing wings -- or perhaps something worse. I'm feeling fine except for having to toss $15 worth of food out.

I wonder if I will ever make that recipe again. The memory is not good. The entire pot went down the garbage disposal.

I am kind of fussy about using leftovers. One week is my max for cooked items. Uncooked items get the sniff test.

My only symptom this morning is sore ribs from laughing at all your responses. There's some good info, too! Thanks for supporting me in my moment of need. :)

Well, I hope we've all learned something from this. The lesson is if you think you're going to die before morning, DON'T DO THE DISHES! Life is too short to go out on such a low note. Kick off your shoes and dance first. Then perish.

You've opened a can of chicken broth, but the recipe only calls for half a cup. It safe to put the rest of the open can directly in the refrigerator. However, refrigerating leftover canned foods this way is not the best option.

The reason they used to say "never store opened cans in the refrigerator" had to do with how how they made and soldered the cans -- apparently in this day and age that no longer applies.

An opened can of veggies can pick up bad tastes in the frig though. Though I doubt it is lethal.

Thank goodness you're okay. Since I'm sort of local to you, I was trying to figure out how to lose 10 pounds fast for the CF funeral pics that would be sure to be taken at the service. LindaC is already buying large quantity of chickens and ham for the luncheon and the rest of us are wondering if there's enough in the funeral fund for wine.

Hmm, starting to sound like a good party. Maybe I should just lie in a coffin for awhile so we can party. Someone has to come over and feed me once in awhile. Yes, Linda would be my first choice for Chef d'Funeral.

Glad you made it with minimal damage. I was looking forward to the funereal food though. I was hoping we'd make it a pot luck. Since I'm in Northern South Jersey I figured I'd be able to attend. I'd be glad to sit by the coffin and feed you some of each offering.

I'm making a big pot of chili this afternoon and I'm almost at the point where I add the corn.........I think I need to look again in the freezer and see if I have some frozen. Opening that can of corn is going to be kind of hard... shudder.

You all really are a team of comedians. Who knew. I have to say that I like the idea of a Funeral Cook-Off. The PA Dutch have a specialty called Funeral Pie, made with raisins (not corn). I like raisins a lot but a whole mouthful at once could be a bit overwhelming.

Sue, yes, I think Krimpets are the antidote for every bad thing in life. Too bad the the Tastykake company is in bad financial straits. I cannot imagine the world without them.

I wasn't here last night to see this post but would have recommended that you drink a couple of shots of straight bourbon or brandy to disinfect the errant corn after the fact.

Brrr, that brings back nasty memories. I once made spaghetti with a jar of opened marinara sauce left in the fridge too long. Caught food poisoning and was sick for 3 days. Since then, I am paranoid and don't eat anything that's been in the fridge for more than a couple days.

A funeral cook off. Sounds kind of morbid, but useful, too, to those of us that don't have LindaC's experience. We could learn about what to bring to a funeral and what not to bring.

Kinda makes me think of Mrs. Fletcher of Murder She Wrote. It wasn't a good thing to be one of her friends because you knew you were going to die. I wonder if LindaC's friends worry about that, too, lol.
