Me Again! Costs Mounting. Need Receiver Too

I never thought about it when pursuing the new Blu-Ray player, but obviously our 2001 Yamaha receiver has no HDMI connections.

The tech from Abt must have just done what he could connecting our Sony Bravia TV to the Yamaha in 2010. How much must I spend for a new receiver? Clearly, we are not audio/video sophisticates!

Could someone explain how all these parts work together?

1) DirecTV HD-DVR (Signal comes in here and goes to...?)

2) Tuner (I know this controls the four speakers and subwoofer.)

3) 1080p TV (Gets input from all the others?)

5) Blu-Ray DVD Player (Only connected to TV -- and Receiver for speakers?)

I'm reminded of that old song: The music goes round and round, and it comes out...on the TV screen and speakers?

The receiver is the hub of the system so everything connects to it. All the audio / video inputs (DirectTV, BluRay, Wii, etc) connect to the receiver to send audio and/or video signals in. All recently made equipment will use HDMI cable but most receivers will also handle other types of inputs for older equipment (the one exception is that many new receivers do not support old turntables). The receiver then sends audio output to speakers via speaker wires and subwoofer coaxial cable, and video output to the TV via HDMI cable. You can spend a lot on a receiver with all the bells and whistles but a basic one should not cost more than $200-$300. Just make sure it supports BluRay audio formats and has enough HDMI input connections to handle all your equipment with room for a few extra things you may add in the future.

Thanks Mr. B. I was afraid of that: The receiver is the 'brains' of the outfit. I'll look for one with six HDMI 'ports' and one that will support Blu-Ray audio. Looks like I'll also need at least four HDMI cables. I remember a post saying that a cable is a cable, but I see a wide range of pricing on them. I do have one short one that came with the Sony Blu-Ray.

This morning AT&T emailed me touting their 'U-verse'. They currently bundle our landline/internet/DirecTV HD-DVR. It looks like U-verse replaces the DirecTV part, but much of the focus is on things we don't care about, like music and 24/7 hand-held 'connectivity'.

I've cooled on the whole 'streaming movies' thing. Netflix and Amazon's current movies are not of interest to us. Our library has free DVD's of everything I saw on their lists that I *would* want to see. We've already seen the old episodes of various British TV series on offer to stream. We've watched many more recent episodes of these series on DVD's from the library. Maybe 'streaming' is of more interest to people who are more isolated -- or watching on hand-held screens? Are there other services with wider offerings?

For those of you having troubles with cukes and squash, you might want to inter-plant with nasturtiums next time, try it! My garden in 9b is just going to be one year old, or should I rather say, I will be celebrating one year of being the garden's loving custodian....so I have lots of troubles. In march/April I had a jungle of brassicas (both rapas and oleraceas). I had this green explosion and almost ran out of room in the freezer. Turnips, kales, collards, bok choi, beet greens, you name it. When it got warmer the harlequin beetles attacked them and they all died, after I had hopes for their perennialization (a word?). The Harlequin proceeded to suck the jalapenos and the tomatoes, ruining several tomato plants too. I was (am) so afraid to put brassicas on the ground again, until I realized I need to give them sacrificial crops. This started to work to some extent last year, and my fear was that sunflowers would not sprout at this time of the year. Guess what? they did! I now have sunflowers growing and I just planted some kale and mustards near them. Not sure if nasturtiums will do the trick for brassicas but I put them in too. We also got some brussel sprouts trying to germinate in a protected environment (terrarium), I think I will use the plastic cylinders from soft drink bottles that grandad from Louisiana is showing on the cole crops thread. So glad I overcame my fear of trying brassicas again. I still have to successfully grow cauliflowers and broccoli though. We will see how the brussel sprouts do and think about it, my cauliflowers never flowered last year, but the leaves were good....LOL In the mean time, the amaranth is still producing as many greens as I need. They are tougher leaves now that the plants are seeding, so I just cook them longer and they are still acceptable. Whatever tries to attack them gets in turn eaten by a large collection of lady bugs that seem to hang out near them a lot. I am encouraging more lady bugs by planting more and more cilantro. When they reach their end I will still have several dozen pounds of frozen green in the freezer from the spring. After that I hope the cole crops will be ready to harvest, and the harlequins somewhat controlled. So I hope anyways. I was so furious when i found out they are an introduced species! grrrr.....and no predators either, not even chickens will eat them. Anybody knows of other sacrificial crops to deter bugs from cole crops? I will need something after the sunflowers run their course, but I suppose since now I know they will grow at any time, I can keep planting more and more sunflowers. A very handsome looking sacrificial crop at that.....

I am not an expert. That out the way, lets look at some orchids in nature. High elevations for the most part, several hundred to thousands of feet. High up in tree canopy, couple hundred feet. Light canopy coverage, constantly moving branchlets overhead. Equatorial locations, consistent 12 hour light period virtually year round. If you get from that that a longer rather than shorter period of light is required you would be right. Situations like our east and west window locations are unknown and are not dealt with well for the most part. Light will be too intense for too short a period of time. Under lights the situation is vastly improved but the lights need to have a minimum intensity of around 500fc for phals and ~1000fc for anything considered medium light. ~2000fc would not go amiss for high light types. At these kinds of intensities 12hr is absolute minimum, 14hr, much better and 16hr best. Going over 16hr brings you past the point of diminishing returns, plants need to sleep like you do. Not surprised the T5 'only' do 1800fc they are 'only' high output not 'very high output'. And no, they won't do anything beyond what they are rated for, there isn't any intrinsic benefit to being T5 vs T8, all the money buys you is miniaturization, the tubes are thinner and the fixtures sleeker. High output T8 are available and will be just as bright as T5 at lower cost... if you can find them. For a closet I can't imagine doing better than finding one of those rolling clothes racks that the better hotels roll your hangables on and hanging a couple or three CFL or Wonderlite from. At floor level will be all the light you could want depending on what you want to spend for bulbs and kilowatt hours to run them. H

Thanks everyone for their Comments. I thought the labor would be alittle bit cheaper, but I am having one more GC coming in tomorrow, and if that doesn't work out, I will probably hire my own brother who is knows how to do all these for a cheaper price. As someone mention, I may need to hire a plumber and electrician for the work that my brother can not do. I have all the appliance ready, so this is the only thing that needed to be done in order to finish the kitchen completely. The GC that gave me the first estimate, He knows how to do everything (plumbing, electrician, and etc) so it's everything in one. I think he will have at least 2-3 of his helpers who will help him out. Sorry if I didn't get to answer any other question, but I will answer when I have more time. I need to put cabinets because we bought a foreclosure and their missing doors and the previous owner took all of the drawers. Thanks for everyone input.

Sorry about your phone! I don't understand why anyone would want to get a cell phone on a contract basis when there are good,reliable, less expensive ones without a contract.I just got rid of an AT&T that seemed to multiply in cost every month,in spite of what my so called "plan" was.I got a Virgin Mobile(no,I'm not affiliated with the company in any way).No contract,unlimited nationwide anytime calling for $49.99 a month plus tax.It ends up around $60.00 a month and for $10.00 more you can get unlimited texting.The service is great and I think pretty much nationwide. DD has Boost which is about the same price.You can order the phone of your choice online or go to RadioShack,some Wal-Mart and K mart stores.Online has more choices than most of the stores that sell them.I have had so many bad experiences with contract phones I will never get another one!

HDMI cables from retail stores are way overpriced. Look for 'high speed' HDMI and you should be OK. Monoprice.com has the best prices.

The appeal of streaming all depends on what you want to watch. We just watched all 4 seasons of Battlestar Galactica on Netflix. Next we'll probably start on Downton Abbey to catch up. It's much easier than having to deal with disks; on the other hand the audio and video quality is less than you get with BluRay disks and even with a 20MB service we still get occasional pauses, so I prefer disks for watching movies where you really want to be absorbed in the experience.

Glad to hear I can get 'generic' HDMI -- just has to say "High Speed", eh?

I think we'll stick with DVD's and skip the 'streaming' for now. I thought I was the only person who has not seen "Downton Abbey 2". Our DVR failed to record the first two episodes while we were on Maui (and we don't have a DVR there). We record almost everything so that we can watch at our leisure. We're catching up on "Hawaii Five-O" now.
