Yes I did add salt.

My only idea is to sand off the rust and spray some pam on the drum..

MIne has stopped when the liquid-to-be-ice-cream got too solid around the outside. I had to turn off the machine, stir the liquid and start up again because the dasher had gotten 'stuck'.

Thanks.. I noticed the liquid-to-be-ice-cream had turned to Ice Cream.. But I wasn't sure if it, or the ice on the outside had stopped it. Or both

I tried to talk the wife into making more last night.. But she said she's "had enough" so Im on my own now.

I'm confused. Did it only stop when the ice cream became firm? If so, that is what should happen.

I was thinking someting along the lines as soonergrandmom. Because it was done. That's how you know it's done, isn't it? It won't be solid (hopefully not too solid) ice cream until you've "aged it" (what is that called?) in the freezer for a few hours.

How long had it been turning?

I didn't time it.. But I'm guessing ten minutes into the process it stopped turning. And yes, at that point we scooped out the ice cream, which consistency was half way between liquid and firm Ice cream, and put it in another container and into the freezer. Took two days to firm up hard since I didn't use milk. Only heavy cream.

Thats normal?

Not normal. Yea, 10 minutes isn't long enough. I'd give the motor a good spray with some WD40.

Is the motor still working?

Yes it still runs/turns surprisingly. Motor has probably seen better days so I will take it apart and see if it needs lube.

I am not familiar with bucket ice cream makers. I would assume the motor is an induction AC motor geared to slow speed/high torque to drive the dasher.

If the canister and dasher is not rotating but the motor is working, then the coupling to the dasher shaft or some gears may be stripped, unless the mechanism has a clutch, which I am doubtful.

I don't think oiling the motor will help. A motor like that normally come with sintered bronze bearings which are permanently lubricated.

I think was talking about where the dasher goes into the motor. If there is rust, that might indicate rust other places? Could be wrong, but it sure couldn't hurt. If rerod can take it apart though... they will see if it's stripped or other issues. I hope he lets us know how it turns out.

It will be a good thing to have the machine working. It's one of the few ways you can have enough home-made ice cream for a party.

Well.. Wife and I made another batch and I think it turned out ok. Instead of 2.5 quarts, we made the entire 5 quarts. That might have been the problem the first time and the ice cream froze to fast with smaller amount.

This time it also stopped, but after 45 minutes and we just put it in the freeze to cure..

"Motor has probably seen better days so I will take it apart and see if it needs lube."

That's what we did when ours stopped, and what had happened was that all the lube (grease) had balled up in one spot and needed to be redistrubuted. The lube looked like axel grease that my father used to use on his tractors - it was not liquid oil.

Nothing to lose by taking the motor apart - they are very simple and easy to put back together.
