I've got to start somewhere!

And this looks like a nice place to try! I normally hang out at the KT, so I recognize a few names here.

Lately, I've just felt so unhappy and hopeless about my weight. I've never felt satisfied with my weight, but the past couple years the pounds have just kept multiplying! No one but me (and my doc) knows the actual number-not even DH-I'm too embarassed to admit it to anyone! Not that they can't see it for themselves?

3 1/2 years ago (before my wedding) I went to a nutrionist and lost about 35 lbs, but have slowly gained a lot back!

I've been thinking about doing WW? or following the plan the nutrionist laid out, just basically well-rounded meals. I know that none of those fad diets or pills will ever work (Wouldn't that be nice though??), besides I was too scared to ever try that junk!

It drives me crazy though-I KNOW what I should eat. I know it works, so why am I not doing it? Why am I carrying around this unhealthy extra weight and wearing "fat" clothes?? Why didn't I start to fix this problem when I had 5-10lbs to lose instead of 25-30?? WHY WHY WHY? But then I think maybe if I don't change years from now, will I be wondering why I have a even more lbs to lose??

DH and I go to the gym 2-3 times a week and exercise for at least 30-60 minutes each time. But at one point I was exercising 5-6 times a week (aerobic classes and weight-lifting), and still not losing the weight! It was as soon as I started eating healthy that the weight came off. I could definitely do more though.

ARGH!! It's so frustrating. My DH is one of those people that can eat like a horse and never gain a pound! I'm sure his eating habits have rubbed off on me, but not his high metabolism!

So wish me luck-I'll need it!

Hi TeresaVA. Welcome to the board!

I also feel really mad at myself for gaining the weight. But, now I just try to keep looking forward. It could be worse, ya know. At least you're making some progress and now in the right frame of mind to start losing the weight you want. That's important.

Several people are doing the WW points. I'm just cutting back on portions and quit my beloved Pepsis. LOL I do have one every now and then if we GO OUT, or I may just buy one small bottle and bring it home.

I have learned the hard way------if it's in the house--I'll eat it. Especially if I don't have an appropriate lowfat substitute. But, I do believe that my taste buds are accepting the diet sodas better-----I went out for lunch today with a friend and got tea instead of coke.

As you know, exercise is really important when trying to lose weight. It sounds like you and DH already have something going on in that area.

You'll get some great suggestions here, there's several people losing weight------we're working together and supporting each other---good days and bad. One pound at a time.

This one tickles my funny bone. My husband will have the weather station playing on the tube and at the very same time I'll have my weather site up on the inet, and the two forecasts can be totally different, especially where precipitation are concerned. We seem to live in an area where the terrain changes considerably from that direction where the fronts normally sweep in. A county above us or to the left of us can be in a crisis snow or ice emergency and we look out the window at a gentle rain with the temps hovering just above freezing. Or vice versa. I remember a couple years ago going west to the next county to get our accounting done in late winter. There was this magic line not ten miles from our house starting at a state park, when we all the sudden encountered massive trees keeled over from a hideous ice storm we never received and large areas of ice from flooding. It was massive destruction and our accountant told us of being homebound over Christmas with no power for days. We were totally oblivious to the whole episode. It missed us entirely.

I'll echo the thoughts not to skimp on the range, but I do want to share with you...we were going to get a Dual Fuel Wolf (36"). One big savings (a few thousand) would have been to drop that down to a gas only. And then our ultimate savings was to skip Wolf all together and go with a Lacanche, which is basically the same thing, but made in France and it has color :) Ok we didn't save much...but we'd been toying with upgrading the 36" to a 48" wolf and instead got a 55 1/2" Lacanche for the same price as the 36" wolf. With in that space we also got a warming cabinet, which saved a couple grand on the warming drawer we didn't need anymore, so there was still savings and we got all we'd ever want in a stove. In our rental we have the same amount of space and wanted a nice looking range so we went with an Aga, which was much less in $$ but still had the look we were shooting for in a 36" range. Skip, a good friend of ours has the Kenmore Pro Series Range and he likes it quite a bit. He's a chef and uses it to it's utmost. His comments in discussing our choice were that he'd like that extra oomph he'd get with a Lacanche but considering that this range came in their home, he's very happy with it. They have had repairs though I think three or four times??? Issues with heat regularity on the oven were a repeated problem and I think one of the burners had a clicking issue if I remember right (this is a conversation from a couple of years). I have eaten at their home many times...he can cook like a saint on that range :) Saint Chef that is heh heh Oh now on the hand made subway tiles...I built the poorhouse that pecanpie is residing in out of the things. I'm not going to tell you how much I love them...I do...but I could have done other things with that money. I'm not sure it was the best use of our funds for an item that I actually want to have take backstage to the other bling in the kitchen. I know KNOW you can acheive a fabulous backsplash look without spending the thousands I did...and the rent on the poorhouse just ain't cutting it to recoup those costs...Pecanpie...rent's going UP UP UP!

Thank you premier, caroleoh,wbfarms, Les and skypathway. WB, you are more than welcome to copy it. I'm not the first to dress up an inexpensive piece of furniture. Besides my Mom taught me that when someone copies something you've done (like when my sil did everything in her home just like we did in ours)it's a form of flattery. She'd say she wouldn't copy it if she didn't love what we did. LES, I really like the idea of bamboo or leaf pulls, but I promised hubby other than the paint I would only use what we have laying around. You see he doesn't like painted furniture. AT ALL! I like it but would never paint a piece of real wood furniture unless it was already painted when I got it. So I best keep my promise. Maybe once I'm finished and it grows on him I'll replace the current ones with bamboo or leaf. Probably a leaf if I can find one locally that's simple like in the film. It really will need a more substantial pull after all the trim is added and I think a pretty silver leaf would work great.

We don't "dirty" things, therefore cleaning is a snap.... We do many of the same things EmmaR does. -I have eliminated all subscriptions so we don't have magazines and newspapers to contend with. I put books I'm reading in a certain place when I'm done reading, or if I'm working on a knitting project it gets put back in the knitting bag and placed in the closet. The desk in the kitchen is cleared of "stuff" after use (that's what the drawers are for). Hubby usually has a brief case of work to go through each evening, but when he's done it's back in his brief case and that's placed in the same place each day so he doesn't forget it when he leaves for work. -I deal with the mail when I bring it into the house and put the bills to be paid in the desk (I usually go ahead and pay them and put the envelop with the out-going mail) and place the recycling in the recycling basket. -There is a handy basket in the kitchen where we place things we recycle, and it gets taken out and divided in the garage as needed. -We keep a nice decorative basket next to the stairs going to the basement. If we have something that needs to go to the basement, it gets placed in the basket. Whoever goes to the basement the next time takes the item/s in the basket and puts them where they belong. -When we go to bed at night we take a quick run through the living area. Pillows are put back in their place. Throws are folded and put away. Dishes put in the kitchen. -We make the bed as soon as the last person has gotten up. -The last person out of the bathroom sanitizes the sink area and makes sure everything is in it's place, takes anything that needs to go to the laundry room there and hangs it on the rack if it's wet, or if it's dry puts it in the proper basket (we have a 4-basket system so the clothes are already separated). And you wipe up any wet spots each time after washing hands. -Shoes/slippers are put back where they are stored, not smelling up the entrance of the home. Same goes for coats/jackets. They get hung up in the closet not tossed on the closest piece of furniture or hung on the back of a chair. It's just making a good habit instead of fostering a bad habit. -Dishes that don't go into the dishwasher and after meal clean-up is done after each meal. Sometimes all I need is a large plastic bowl filled with water heated in my electric kettle to get it done - no sense wasting a whole sink of water. It takes us about 5-10 minutes to do dishes. The kitchen floor is swept after the last meal of the day (or as needed if I'm making a mess baking/cooking) and the trash from the rest of the house is added to the kitchen trash and it's taken out daily. -I vacuum all floors Monday and Wednesday, and Friday is cleaning day for the whole house. If there is a project or task that is best done with two people, we'll do it on Saturday when hubby is home from work. -If you "did it", then undo it kind of action ASAP. Example: I got the stepstool out to get something off of a high shelf, so when the task was done I put the stepstool back where it belongs. -If you used the last of something, replace or refill it. The "maid" is YOU! -Cleaning equipment is one-size-fits-all. Foster a do-it-now attitude and avoid good intentions...;-) -Grainlady

I know only too well your dilema and after 3 attempts during the last 3 years and falling off my goal - I got extremely POd at myself. Rather than feel sorry for myself I turned all that anger into DETERMINATION. No excuses.

I love the phrase 'nothing tastes as good as thin'.

I am not striving for thin. I am striving for 'healthy' - something I can LIVE WITH. I count EVERYTHING I eat - good, bad or ugly. I pulled out my WW books, stared, did two weeks quietly to see if I had truely made a commitment to myself...came back to this forum and joined in and then subscribed to WW online to keep myself motivated and enjoy reading their articles. I 'treat' myself to slimming magazines and enjoy their motivation, I have and continue to reward myself not with food but with....

new shirts for work
new earrings (lots of funky ones)
new undies
new 'interim' pants so I look great while losing (I bought the next size down as soon as I could squeeze into them and will take them in on the sewing machine until I can squeeze down further once these can't be taken down anymore without looking dorky.

The new tops have really boosted my moral.

New shoes to pamper my feet.

Refreshed attitude. I feel better about myself.

I know exactly where you are right now and I am reaching out to you hoping to catch your hand. We are in the same boat. Quite a few of us have the same goals right now, looking to shed about 30 - 40 pounds, some more/less.

Hi Teresa,

I'm new here also and I always hung out on the cooking forum and look where it got me! LOL That's not really true, I got myself in this overweight predicament and it was so easy to do. With each pound I gained, I disliked myself more. Then my cholesterol skyrocketed. Then the leg pain started and I found I had a blocked artery. The doctor did an arteiorgram and showed me the pictures of the blocked artery and also the fat buildup in the other arteries. It's an ugly picture! That's when I came to a grinding halt with all the eating whatever I wanted. I realized the blocked artery could have been near the heart and could have been a heart attack and I'm far from ready to die. The doctor said "get on a low cholesterol diet and loose weight" and believe me I am.

Have you had your cholesterol checked? It could be an eye opener and give you even more incentive. I know how difficult it is to diet when you love to eat. And it seems the older I got the better food tasted. I was a ninty-four pound weakling who couldn't gain an ounce until I got in my thirties and then I couldn't seem to stay away from food and it's been that way ever since.

I would never presume to tell you what type of diet to go on but I would suggest that you go on a healthy type of diet which I believe WW to be. I consider some of the fad diets very unhealthy.

You will get lots of support here from these wonderful people. They also have lots of good answers for any diet questions which you may have. Good luck with your new diet!! You can do it!!! ((((((((((Teresa)))))))))
