window treatment help?

I'd like to hear some opinions, because I'm pretty baffled.

We recently moved into the house that we built, and I hate all of my old stuff, and I want everything redecorated NOW, but the problem is I have no idea what I want. LOL

I figure I've got to start somewhere, so the bedroom seems to be a good place to begin, especially since JCP is having a sale :)

I went to look today, but my JCP is absolutely horrible in the home section, so they didn't have any samples for me to look at- blah.

So, if you guys could help me pick out a couple of things, I promise I'll take pics and get some major help on the rest of this room, and the rest of the house too.

The bed fits between two windows, with only an inch to spare on each side. It is a king sized bed, and I'm not willing to get a smaller one :) One the right window, there is not enough room for stack back, so I think that totally excludes drapes on those windows.

On another wall, I have a double window. I would like to put drapes on it (and make an eventual sitting area there), so I was thinking these:

My problem is the colors. Seems like the Ivory/Beige would be best as far as easily changing out the bedding come summer. I wonder about the Ivory Damask shades paired with the brown drapes. Or???

I like wood furniture. Currently, there is only a chest, bed, and 2 nightstands....but all of this may very well need to change. That's for a later post...

My bedroom styles is more traditional/romantic. Right now, there is a lace bedskirt and a floral quilt on it...but no shams and such to match (shame, shame). I'd like to get a nice put together look going on, but it does not need to be matchy. The walls are a mossy green, off white trim, and med-brown wood floors. The house leans French Country, I guess....although there are no decorations to speak of. High baseboards, 10 ft ceilings, lots of cabinets that are slightly darker than the floors.

After moving around 12 times in 13 years, we've not accumulated decorating things. I love my new house, and want to make it mine, but I'm also a little broke ;) and overwhelmed at it all.

Stick with neutral walls~you can add color w/accessories.

I recently purchased a comforter at a thrift store for $25~it was like new!

And yes, I *can* afford new, but why spend more money on something I can possibly find for less? 3/4 of what I have in my home was purchased used, and no one believe it when I tell them. You do have to be selective and sometimes wait for that perfect item. It will be worth it! ;o)

I know you are right :) I will have to be patient, and actively seek out what I want. With 4 children I homeschool, I'm not very good at going shopping anymore! I scoured the town today looking for things. I hit all of your #1,2,4,6,7 and bought one thing from HL- ack. Well, I may go back for an adorable tea cart I found at an antique place.

However, I figure the least I could do while waiting for that perfect thing to find me, I could get some curtains hung in the master, and possibly get a new comforter set as well :)

Any thoughts to the colors I was looking at on those, anyone??

Another source to look is jcp.com. I noticed they have 3 blackout drapes (one in regular home WT section and 2 in clearance) in the longer length at low prices--if the colors work for you (always the challenge). If you can't find the grommet style that might be easier to pull open/shut on a daily basis, you might consider ring clips since they slide easily. If the hem looks too challenging to alter on rod pocket styles, you can cut off the top and rehem that quite easily. IMHO they'll look best if you have them full length, rather than end at the window sill. It seems like that would really detract from the effect of the window. Even your inspiration pic, while really cute, seems to just miss the mark a bit on the curtains. They're ok I guess, but full-length would have been better--IMHO. You may have to get extra panels to give the fullness you want across the window when they're closed unless you go with custom widths. Good luck with your project! well, it just depends what you want. if those are real oak floors, you can always have them patched in, but that means the rest of the floor will need refinishing. For sure I'd put in some windows along that wall, and try and have the sink under it. Cabinets. you can do inexpensive or high end. I wouldn't nix the idea of a carpenter custom building some for your space. RTA cabinets are actually decent. hire someone to install. If you're on a budget, I prob wouldn't use HD or Lowes. you're paying them to be the middleman contractor, and they sub out their work. Sometimes their countertops are a decent price though. talk to a kitchen designer or an actual kitchen refinishing company. I found a great one on Yelp (all 5 stars) and they were amazing. I had mine painted, but they also did custom carpentry, refacing, vent hoods, and everything in between. If you could find a company like that, I'd go that route. walk around a stone yard to see what's avail for countertops/islands. Some people like ikea. It just depends the look you want. the rest of the house is very nice. looks like you have plenty of room. don't know why they did such a tiny kitchen with all of that room! however, for 30K, you're going to have to DIY, learn to DIY, or learn how to shop for bargains. I'd still list your current kitchen for sale. someone would want it. they can come in and take it apart and charge 1K for everything. (to demo all of that, you're looking at over 1K anyway! ) hiring a KD for a custom layout design wouldn't be a bad idea

For the sliders, I'd look into a remote controlled roll down shade mounted outside above the doors. You can get them in different degrees of opaqueness, to control the light, but they will not give full privacy at night unless you get opaque, which won't work in the daytime unless you want black out. Most people have some kinds of lights outside their doors, so if it's lit outside there is no 'black hole' effect for uncovered windows. On the corner windows, I'd want bottom up shades so they could be partially covering the bottom part of the windows for privacy (the only part anyone could see in), yet you can still see out over the top and get the light. They also make vertical cellular shades that stack to the side and pretty much disappear. Outdoor mounted roller shade:

Hard to understand why a northeastern exposure would get a lot of sun. Perhaps a small amount in the early morning in midsummer, but it has to be out of the sun after that. If it's more eastern, than northern, a little more morning sun. My solution would be to plant small shade trees not to far from those windows.

FS, we seem to have the same taste~just yesterday I ordered the Mystique plaid valance in the ebony. My colors are black/tan/gold/ivory, so these work in quite well, and also lean toward the French country look that i'm going for too.

I like the bedding too~which color are you choosing? Don't hesitate to bring in a little black in lampshades, or even in an area rug, and pillows~not solid black though.

I was not able to pull up one of the links, but can't remember which one it was. IMO, you're going in the right directions by staying w/neutrals. ;o)

PC, I was looking at the Carmen color. It works with the green walls, and has the ivory for the drapes, plus I can pull a red out.

I had decided to sleep on it last night. When I re-looked this morning, I realized that the roman shades are not long enough. They go to 64", and I need 75. I know I could go custom....but I really really don't want to spend that kind of money- especially when I know I could sew.

I think I'm back to square one.

Trying to find my patient hat.... :)
