peri-meno rant

My cycle had been getting shorter as I get "less young". It's been 21 days or so for the last two years. Now I haven't had a cycle in over 60 days and I am afraid when it does come it is going to be a doozy. Not to mention that in the last three weeks 5 lbs of water weight has permanently attached itself to my thighs and stomach and nothing I do will make the scale budge.

It happened to me. On a flight from Chicago to Phoenix. I bled through e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g. No idea if the altitude and/or pressure had anything to do with it, but if you happen to have a flight planned, I'd say BE PREPARED.

Do you think that the anxiety is making your blood pressure high? That's a possibility to consider. What kinds of things trigger panic attacks, or are they unpredictable? Have you been really stressed out for the past couple of months? Any major changes or occurances in your life? At your age, your hormone levels may still be in normal range, but that doesn't mean that hormone changes and fluctuations don't have anything to do with it. Good luck in finding an effective way to deal with it. Mrs H ps- if you are going crazy, it doesn't mean it will always be that way :)

These are menopause symptoms and will go away to some extent. I hadn't realized that sudden cold feet are a symptom until it stopped. At night I would get up and put on 2 or 3 pairs of socks because my feet were freezing. I never did sweat too much -- even when I came off of HRT, but I would suddenly get so hot that I thought I needed some fresh air. I teach school and would ask a football player (happen to wander to his desk) if it felt hot in the room and he would say "no". Many of the girls wear so few clothes that I didn't dare ask them, but the big guys are often hot. Sometimes even inside I would begin feeling a little ill because of the heat, then it would pass. I did have a little trouble with gardening during this time, but that passed also. In my opinion it helps to really load up on water. You know that you have to be losing fluids even if you don't feel sweat, so it doesn't hurt to increase the water intake from 2 to 3 liters. Dehydration can cause fatigue you know. I go to a doctor every year and get a regular blood test. I feel confident that the thyroid check is part of that test, but you might want to ask your doctor.

i started having these same issues in January this year. have had hypothyroidism for a few years but with levo always felt fine . symptoms lasted about 6 weeks and everything stopped one day in February and felt like myself again. Until June when they started back up and still going strong now. I’m 47 and my gyno tested and confirmed with blood test I’m peri. i have an iud so havent had a period in 4 years. Some days i have a huge headache and then others I have the Foggy head feeling that is so bad to describe. gyno would not talk about hrt without me seeing a neurologist which he says Im not having migraines and okd hrt. Odd thing is one day when my ear started to hurt took an Allegrad and it took away the head fog within an hour. Unfortunately that didn’t last. I did for about a month but still had headache. Now the Allegra isnt helping with anything. I’m waiting to see an ent because I feel like my sinuses are so full been an antibiotic for a few days and dI want seem to help either. I’m sure the ent will not have anything to say. Ive had a nurse practitioner mention AD which I’m not really for but will as a last ditch effort. Husband doesn’t really get it and that makes me feel more alone which just makes me cry more. going to ent and if nothing there going to try hrt and AD. scared to death of something serious to but nerologist didnt see any need for ct scans or mri. i also get these weird eye/head feeling on occasion when watching fast moving things or really shaky scenes when the camera is moving. I’m not dizzy and can’t explain how I feel other than I have to shut my eyes to focus. So scary!! I think if I could just come to grips it’s peri symptoms I’d be able to deal. Oh been very stressed at work for about two years but that is lessening as I finally have help. Was hoping with help and less stress I’d be better but no such luck. Hi there, sorry to hear about your troubles, I am having somethign similar at the moment, with exception of heavy prolonged bleeding that sends me into acute anemia fast every time it happens. We are same age so I assume you are in perimenopause by the sound of it. First of all let me tell you that the palpitations and anxiety attacks are usual thing that happens during this time, be comforted that you are NOT having heart attack or dying, will just need to learn to control these. I did pretty much and they are under control now. Remember its just an attack, let it come, pass over you, keep repeating they will pass. Set little routines that usually help you such as, breathing into a paper bag, or your hands, carbon dioxide will slow your breathing and prevent you from hyperventilating. Fresh air helps me, also getting busy, doing anything to take your mind of it. If its already in full blown mode, just sit safely, cold towel around your neck, or wash your face in cold water, and breathe, slowly, try to control your breathing...after a while your body will pick it up and slow down the whole thing overall. I found out it helps a lot to develop the routine, it will be better than pills once you manage to improve it. I hope this was of some comfort to you, hope to hear about your improvement. :) hugs

Have any of you tried the diva cup yet? It worked for me on my heaviest day. I'm not using the actual diva brand; found another disposable one in Walmart to see how I liked it. Use that with a pad or liner & you're good to go over night if you gush...

What I've read is that the chemicals used to treat the cotton don't get totally washed out & this is why some of us are having problems now from years of tampon & pad use. Some also feel it's the cause of GYN cancers. There are a few FB pages that deal with this; if you read some of them; what they say makes a lot of sense.

Rant away indeed! I feel your pain, although I'm "past it" myself - not having menstruated in probably about 2 years now. I feel like I spend entirely too much time and energy complaining to people around me about my hot flashes, but I'm trying explain why I've just broken out in a very noticeable sweat, have gone beet red, and am peeling off layers of my clothes as fast as I can. Anyway - getting a little bit OT there - but I too recall the last few times I bled, and it was very unpredictable and very heavy. Not fun at all, I know!

Auntjen, I'm right there pantin' and flushin' with you. I'm closing in on 2 years post-menstruation myself. I know your climate in Texas can be as hot and unbearably humid as mine in Miami so I'm sure we both are 'enjoying' the same delights of sudden drenching sweats and that sensation of having just stepped into an open oven--or outside in July even it it's January, right?!

I have to say though, from the time of my menarche-at 11 yo!-my periods were always extremely unpleasant physically and I suffered with tremendous hormonally related emotional upheaval. So on balance I'll take the wonky internal temperature regulator over the peri-menopausal and indeed all the menstruating years. After living with menstrual misery for 40 years, I don't miss any of it for a second!

I'm right in it with you.

My hormones are all over the place and my period used to be so regular and now I have no idea when or for how long anymore. I can go three months then, bam, I just want to stay in bed wearing the biggest, baggyest sweat pants I can find.

Kelly, I am also hypothyroid combined with peri-meno I am a mess. I exercise and watch my diet but the weight does not come off.

However, I still use BC to keep my hormones more even and cramps at bay. I have really bad PMS, too.

I'm in the same club. I find it all very aggravating. I had the same three-week cycle for quite a while, very heavy, and I was anemic. Got to the point where I was sick and just dragging for an entire summer, and finally I had an endometrial ablation two years ago -- one of the best things I have ever done! I have not had a period in two years! However, no period doesn't mean no PMS and no peri-meno. All the hormones are still there! Ugh. Not only do I have the usual PMS for 3-5 days, but now I also have the same degree of crabbiness mid-cycle accompanied by major bloating. It all seems more random, too. I used to be able to keep track or anticipate the timing of all this, but now, not so much. Two weeks ago I was so bloated and up a few pounds, could barely wear my jeans for about a week, then woke up one day and felt better, pounds were back off, and it all seemed like a random time, cycle-wise. No real hot flashes yet -- I've had a couple -- but sometimes wake up sweating in the middle of the night, when just a few hours before I had been so comfortable in my flannel pj's! And don't even get me started on the acne. Today, in fact, my boobs are hurting for no apparent reason. I feel like my hormones are just all over the place.
