I nearly forgot it was Friday!

I'm leaving tonight for Elery's, we're having the appetizer tasting for his son and the bride-to-be. He's making wontons, Thai wraps, some beef and cheese things in puff pastry. I did meatballs and three sauces, KatieC's savory cheesecake with my habanero gold, some of those cheese thumbprints and a corn/bean salsa.

I'll be back on Sunday and I have Monday off, so I'll go to the farm then, fill tanks and feeders and then I promised Amanda I'd help her make and stuff some breakfast sausage for the freezer.

It's supposed to be 40F here by Monday!

Good luck with the appy tasting, Annie. It sounds like it will be fun.

Both of my boys are leaving this weekend to go back to school. We had a nice four week visit with them, the longest we've all been together in years. It was great! But I'll welcome the calm and quiet again!

I have to work on Monday, boohoo, so after they are both gone I think I will just flop on the couch and do nothing!

Thanks for brining this up, Annie! I've had a somewhat hard week - at least for the past couple of days, and so I'm looking forward to the three-day week-end. This is the first year we will get MLK Day off, and I think I really need it. There has been too much drama here lately. Normally it doesn't phase me that much because I'm used to it and expect it, but certain people here are not handling it well (or appropriately). On the up side, I received a new chair frame that I designed, and my boss raved about how beautiful it is. On the down side, that makes certain other people jealous of me, and that can create ugly monsters.

I'm going to try to get the rest of the house (i.e. my bedroom) completely organized this week-end. I only have one room left to go! If I ever get it finished, I create a virtual tour. It's completely obvious to me now that I must get rid of a lot of things - or store them temporarily in the attic. Fortunately, we have two attics now, and one is accessible from my closet. There are certain things I'm not ready to throw away yet, but if I keep them in the attic for a year and don't miss them, then I think I can discard them - or donate them to a museum of antiquities. (In L.A., anything over 30 years old is an antiquity.)

Pea soup and ham sounds good, but I've been eating a lot of soup lately, as I have been under the weather since Wednesday of last week, which is why I did not post under TGIF last week. I'm much better now, probably at 95%, but I will still take it easy this week-end. It's gotten cool here (mid 60s) and I think we may have had rain last night, which might happen again this week-end, which would be wonderful. If I'm up to it, I will make tamales. I found corn husks at Sprout's, but they cost $5, which I found to be expensive. Last Saturday (when I should have stayed home), we went to what I thought was a Von's close to our house, but it is now a dollar (or 99 cent) store, and I guess corn husks are too expensive for them to carry! Before that we went to a grocery/liquor store that is even closer to our house, and its doors had been chained, as it is going through a change of ownership. The large recycling center in its parking lot was still open, however, but that was all that was going on. Kevin said that he had seen people who collect bottles and cans get vouchers for what they had collected and then used those vouchers to buy lottery tickets! I think they should have given them food stamps instead. There are too many dollar stores now, I think. The fruit and vegetable market that we used to go to is also now a dollar store. I will say that the dollar store that used to be a Von's is much cleaner than the Von's was, and I did not shop at the Von's because it was not very nice. It would be nice if a dollar store would reopen as a vegetable market. Maybe I'll make pizzas this week-end and put some of my Roma tomatoes on them. I've been mostly avoiding cheese while I was sick, as I think it makes congestion worse. I think I'll be fully recovered by tomorrow. I want to make something besides soup. I did make some very good cabbage soup while I was sick, and it was quick and easy and much better than I expected, although it did not have much of a cabbage flavor. I had Kimchee flavored soup yesterday. I turn the TV off whenever anything Superbowl comes on - it's just a lot of annoying noise as far as I'm concerned. It is damp here today too, we got some flurries last evening and now it is more of a mist with it turning to rain I think by the end of the day. I will just be here doing housework stuff as we are still in the orange alert, no schools in session once again. Izzi and I are sharing my breakfast of eggs and toast. I am having hot tea. My son just called and let me know what his plans are for today. Husband is off to work, so I have the day to work around here hopefully with out too much interruption. Chicken rice soup was great, I made a big pot and it was all gone by nightfall. Made the stock from the chicken carcass, 1 hour in the pressure cooker, done as the meat was roasting. I diced the carrots, celery, and chicken breast into neat little cubes, and it really looked cute. Cooked some arborio rice in chicken stock and held it on the side, to be added to each bowl of soup at service (the rice gets mushy if left in the pot of soup). dcarch, that bike looks interesting. I have also seen e-bikes where the motor drives the crankset through an additional chainring, which allows the bike's gearing to act as the motor's transmission. Of course, your legs then have to pedal with the motor, so it is a more "active" sort of e-bike. Supposedly e-bikes are getting popular here in Portland, but I almost never see any on the roads. It makes a lot of sense for heavily loaded bikes - cargo bikes, bikes hauling kids and groceries. The type I'm most interested in use the motor as an intelligent assist - the bike senses if you are pedaling, and adds motor power to the human power in a constant proportion. The principle is sort of to simulate a very strong rider, rather than an electric moped. There is also a "stealth" system called the Gruber Assist that hides the battery and motor in the bicycle's seat tube, and drives the crank through a bevel gear on the bottom bracket, for an invisible and relatively light installation. TGIF indeed, I'm clinking with a cup of peppermint tea. Johnliu, I really like turkey, although I'm not a fan of stuffing. In fact, we had smoked turkey for supper and will have turkey again next week. Are you having visitors, or only the family? I say make whatever they like best and they'll be thankful! Rob, that IS exciting, mostly the visitor, I'll be watching to see who it is. I had to smile at the thought of The Boy, dropping parachutes off the deck. Ashley climbed up onto the roof and dropped eggs, her project was to make something that would protect the egg from breaking when dropped from varying heights. Yeah. Bubble wrap worked really well when I sent that dozen farm eggs to dishesdone in New York, and it worked pretty well for the project, but she eventually made a foam rubber "nerf" type container. What will that contribute to her knowledge as an adult? Darned if I know, LOL. Dedtired, good luck on those walks. Of course, walking in snow up to your armpits does burn a lot more calories. (grin) Lars, I'd definitely go for the free fish. I thought my herbs were finished here, we've had snow a couple of times. I knew the sage would grow through the snow and I'll have rosemary for some time, but parsley and thyme are both green and growing too, I didn't realize they were that cold tolerant. Diane, the second week of deer camp is the most wonderful time of year. (With a big nod to Da Yoopers, LOL) It's cold here and we're supposed to get anything from an inch to 9 inches of snow this weekend. A woodstove would feel good. Alexa is probably partying right now, I live a boring life... Today we raked the yard and cleaned the house well, we have our first potential buyer looking at the house tomorrow. I have all my fingers and pretty much everything else crossed. So, we're going to the farm to check on the calves in the barn that are being weaned and we'll insulate the pump house before it gets too cold. I'm hoping to negate the problem of the pump freezing if it gets more than 20 below zero without running a drop light out there. I don't know if it will work, but if nothing else the insulation will help the light keep it a bit warmer. It's completely underground, it'd make an awesome root cellar if I didn't have a well in there. Tomorrow we are projected to have a high of 24 and a low of 18, plus snow. I guess it's time to break out the hats and gloves... Annie

Gosh! Isn't anybody else glad it's Friday??
Or did y'all already leave? LOL

I'm off work in about 2 minutes for a 3-day weekend. My mom is visiting and we always have fun!

Trying some new recipes and cookware so hopefully will have pics to post next week.

TGIF, everyone! I'm glad, Deanna....I had to work today, my usual day off.

Annie, I wanna come to the party!

May, I welcome the calm and the quiet after the kid's been home overnight, lol.

Lars, Lots of drama in our workplace also. I've been blaming Mercury. Would love to see the chair you designed.

El Nino is doing his thing, it's raining hard here and in the mid-40's. My driveway is a steep skating rink. I'm just glad it's not snowing....we had enough last year to last me a lifetime.

Tomorrow is a half day at work. I get to work alone and it won't be busy, so it should be painless. We haven't decided about Sunday and Monday. I'm leaning towards staying home, cleaning closets and baking bread. No matter what, two days off in a row will be a treat.

I think I am coming down with a chest cold, so today at work was long and miserable.

Tim made me a hot brandy with lemon and honey when I got home and I just vegged out most of the evening.

Yep, it's supposed to reach 40F here tomorrow, too. Hard to believe it will be 60 degrees warmer than last week at this time! LOL
