1st trip to Penzey's on Sunday/What are 'must buys'?

Only recently (from this forum) have I heard about Penzey's. I discovered there's one in Arlington, MA, and since we have to make a trip to Boston on Sunday, I am planning a stop.

I know many of you are big fans. Are there any items you can think of that I just must try?

Oh my, you're going to have so much fun.

I love their Vietnamese cassia cinnamon, their 4 peppercorn blend, the new Mural of Flavor, their smoked paprika. My boss can't live without their hot vindaloo seasoning.

Oh, and at least SMELL the almond extract, it's like heaven in a bottle.

Thank goodness I don't have one near me - I do enough damage ordering online :-)

My staples (and DH has warned me NOT to run out of these) are:
Garlic powder
Cinnamon (they're all great)
Chile Powder (Medium Hot)
Balti Seasoning
Guajillo Peppers (if you're into Mexican food)
Cumin (can you tell we like Mexican?)
Northwoods Seasoning
Onion Powder
Black Tellicherry Peppercorns
White Muntok Peppercorns
Paprika (both Hungarian kinds and Smoked)
Country French Vinaigrette Salad Dressing
Shallot Pepper Seasoning
Vanilla Extract (I bought single-wish I'd bought double)
Natural Wasabi with Pure Wasabi Powder (if you like sushi or to put on seared tuna)
Soup Bases (we've tried the chicken, beef, and seafood)

So far, the only thing we're not crazy about is the Raspberry Enlightenment (probably because we have our own home-grown raspberries in the freezer).

He recently earned extra points by purchasing a big bottle of saffron and a paella pan for me when he was on a business trip in Spain. I can foresee paella becoming his third specialty!

Hi all, I come by and check but don't read everything. I see Marci and Dee said hi, and maybe others have, too. My family's left. I don't know if I mentioned it, but they were successful in their attempt to set up swimming with the dolphins. I couldn't go to that, but did get to swim in the ocean. That's not something I can ordinarily do because of my illness and disabilities. I tried to post a couple of days ago, but everything that came out sounded upset and I didn't want to scare anyone. :) I've been ill the last few days. I talked to my doctor and she said it sounds like viral meningitis. That's the mild kind, not the kind that can leave a person brain damaged or dead, so its nothing to worry about, just uncomfortable - who needs more pain and fatigue. I might go in to her office tomorrow. Tropical Storm Celia went by here yesterday. She was a hurricane a few days ago, but diminished. There was thunder and lightning and heavy rain and winds, but nothing too damaging. Just enough excitement but not too much. I've got into anime for reasons I won't go into. I ordered Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz. Has anyone here seen it? Does anyone know or remember the song by Don McLean, "Chain Lightning?" I've always liked that song. Very dramatic. My internet relationship, which I talked about earlier, is still going strong - seven months now. I said that he is very unhappy and troubled, which is still true, but he has turned out to be also very caring, intelligent, and sweet. I hope we can continue to be friends for a long time, and I hope his situation improves for him. I've been reading about the get together next year. Remember, I'd like a video. :) I know that it will be a blast. It's nice to come here and have this group. You are such a loving bunch where all are welcome. There have been so many ups and downs, but people are always supportive and caring. Love to you, thanks for remembering me, and I hope everyone has a good day. I'm not spending as much time here as I was, which may change (who knows) but I won't get lost. It's been so frustrating to me when others that I care about quit posting and then I never know how they are doing. Gooooooooooooood Halloween day to all! I've been up since early and on the go. Our community center had their first ever "Boo Bash" fun-/fundraiser today, and it was a howling success! As the ways & means chairman, I was delighted with the turnout of people and kids dressed up in costumes and spending lots of time and money enjoying themselves! :0 I did a lot of fun Christmas shopping there for those little fun items that are 'extras' that nobody asks for or expects, but that always find a home happily. I also bought a couple of hand-painted items to continue decorating our house. I had a small serving of Frito pie and a diet Dr.Pepper when I finished my shift of tattooing kiddos. Donna, how nice to see you posting, but how frustrating for you with the delay. Maddie, enjoy the musical! Hope Dee's having fun on her vacation. Suzanne, hope you're enjoying your last sunny evening until next spring. Jan, I'd love a bowl of gumbo about now, TYVM! Raeanne, come back and post more - you're missed! Maddie, should we give it a little bit longer to see if anyone else would like to participate in the ornament exchange. It's so much easier to do an ornie than a whole gift box, so maybe we can get a bigger group together. I already have mine, so I can sound all organized and 'together' here! LOL I have a turkey roasting in the oven for our dinner. I decided to change up tradition from chili this year. I also needed to bake this one so that I can start taking advantage of the wonderful turkey sales starting up next week. We love turkey all year 'round. When I was growing up, the ONLY time my mom cooked a turkey was at Thanksgiving, so it still seems a little strange to me to cook one 'just because'. Oh Yay!! I am so excited. I am not an Atlanta girl myself - DH does alot of business in N. Atlanta & I always stay home(just not that interested.) This weekend we p/u my DS from his first year at camp in Mentone, AL so I have a good reason to go to Atlanta this week. Teacats =- great idea about stocking up on the basics - my poor candles in lanterns outside have literally dripped to the ground! Tina - I am in W. Tn. Your sunroom sounds lovely (Im thinkin your in E. TN (the pretty part?!) How sweet, Pammyfay, to offer to escort! I would love to go with a friend. I get so sidetracked just in life in general much less with a lot of visual overload!! (maybe I should take an add pill!!) Okay, so meatballs are a MUST!! The lingonberries sound wonderful - esp. over pork, yum. Bumblebeez - I am the same way with PB outlet here in town. I go and very rarely see anything I want. Decent bedding & towels but the furniture is crappy (sorry) but they sure do have pretty magazines!! Wm. Sonoma outlet, on the other hand......pretty good stuff in there! Moccasinlanding - I was just in Mobile leaving for a cruise. We have a very good friend on Dauphin Island - DH & DS have been to see him but I had to stay home. I will let you know how it goes. Camlan - thanks for the description of the store & reminder to bring a reuseable bag. Prairiedawnpam - I'll let you know what color...Im hoping it is more of a sagey green. I love their cocoa powders too...

I also like their Hungarian Paprika, Canadian Mustard, Celery Salt, Cardamom...

Fox Point - I add it to the dough for sandwich rolls, but it has a lot of uses as a seasoning for vegetables, poultry, fish and salads.

Cake Spice - Great for coffee cake, spice cake, quick breads, French toast...

Salsa Salad Seasoning - season fresh salsa, black bean or green salads.

Italian Herb Mix

Pizza Seasoning

Country French Vinaigrette Dressing Base

As well as many already mentioned above...

Get what you like in bulk, then buy a bunch of stuff "to try" in the small jars. I love their small jars - I don't like to buy too much of something I don't use often.

Most of my favorites have been mentioned already. I have an annoyingly (at times) task-oriented husband. (This story does have a point, I promise!) He runs errands with literal precision that baffles me: Not only will he not "stop and smell the roses," but he won't notice the roses if I don't point them out. So I sent him into Penzey's with a three item list and explicit instructions to open at least 20 jars, smell the contents, and buy anything else that appealed to him. He came home with some fun discoveries that led to some interesting meals.

So my recommendation to you would be to open and sniff as many jars as possible especially if the spices are unfamiliar, or you can't imagine why anyone would buy them! Also, if you go at a non-busy time, engage the (knowledgeable) staff in conversation about their favorite spices, or their favorite ways of using a non-familiar one.

Oh, and if you leave the store without a big bottle of Vietnamese cassia cinnamon, you have wasted a wonderful opportunity!

Turkish seasoning (great on grilled foods or steamed veggies)

Salad Sprinkle (especially for egg salad)
Florida Pepper (a citrus-y taste)
Chili powder
Sumac
Celery leaves (great for soup making)
Etc!

If you use dried rosemary, instead of fresh, theirs is the best I have ever tried. It's very strong and flavorful, so I would recommend getting a small amount of it.

compumom - Thanks for the rec on Greek seasoning. Last time I was there I could have sworn I bought it, but I must have put it down. Will give it a shot.

I have to be honest, I'm not sure that my palate is sophisticated enough to tell the difference between Penzey's or McCormick gourmet. But the prices are good, everyone says it's good, and the store seems like it needs support so at this point 90% of my spices are bought there.

I love their Aleppo Pepper.
